5D--The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Imagine that you are Tom Sawyer at the end of chapter 5, chapter 6, or chapter 7.  Put yourself in "his shoes" and write a diary/journal entry from Tom's point of view.  Summarize Tom's thoughts about the events in the chapter you selected.  Remember you pick one chapter--don't have to do all three :)  Make sure you identify the chapter you choose!

2D-The Giver

The Giver-Blog Post Utopian Society
You have been asked by the government to develop an ideal society (Utopian).  In this society, all members must be equal.  Racism, violence, crime, homelessness, poverty, divorce, and hunger cannot exist.  Choose three problems to remove from society and explain how you'd remove the problems.  Will you change laws?  How can you contribute to making society a perfect place?

1D-The Giver

The Giver--Blog Prompt 1D

Once Jonas is selected as the next Receiver of Memory, his training begins.  This training involves listening carefully as The Giver shares memories of the world from back and back and back.  Each memory The Giver shares leaves a profound impression on Jonas.

Recall a memory from your life that left a deep impression on you or that affected you in some way.  Tell us about the memory, and then decide how your life would be different if you did not have this memory.

(6C) The Giver-Ch. 2 Response

6C
At the end of Chapter 2, Lily wants her "comfort object," a stuffed elephant. Jonas had a stuffed bear when he was little. He dismisses them as imaginary creatures...and he's talking about the real animals, not the stuffed animals.

Where are the animals in this society?.
What would be your comfort object? A bear? A cat? A dog? A Pillow Pet?

Read your classmates' responses and reply to at least two of your classmates.

Please include your first name last initial at the bottom of the post.

We have discussed schema (background or prior knowledge) many times this year.  Discuss (write a response) on how you used schema while reading your current book.

Example:

Looking for Alaska
John Green
Pg. 90

While reading this book, I feel I am using my schema to understand the character Alaska better.  I have a friend who seems to have a lot in common with this character.  They are both free spirits.  Because I have a friend like Alaska, I find her quirkiness endearing.  She is a likable character to me even though she does some very odd things.  For example she has a candle burn off and makes a mountain of hot wax.  She spends pretty much hours doing this, which seems odd.  When I read this part, I could imagine my friend doing the same thing--creating art in a very abstract way :)  The connection I have to Alaska and her personality is one of the reasons I am really enjoying this book.  I am finding that this book is a hard one to put down!

Why did the author write this book?  What can you infer?  Make a claim and support with evidence.

Example:

Lois Lowry may have written the book Crow Call to share her own experience of a loved one coming back from being gone for a long time.  In the book the main character's father has been gone for a long time and his daughter is very excited to be spending some time with him.  In fact she gets up extra early to go on an adventure with him.  She even wants to dress like he does.  The little girl sees a shirt in the window at Kronenberg's window (a store), and her father allows her to get it even though it is super big (a man's shirt). After visiting the store, they go out for breakfast together.   I can infer that Lois Lowry had a good relationship with her father as well.  I think Lois wanted to share a story showing the importance of a relationship between a father and daughter.

Please find a quote from the book you are reading to demonstrate your knowledge of an inference.  Explain your quote and the evidence used to make your inference from the text.

Example:

Crow Call
Lois Lowry
Pg 1-2
Include your name at end of post.

"It's morning, early, barely light, cold for November.  At home, in the bed next to mine, Jessica, my older sister, still sleeps. But my bed is empty."

From this excerpt I can infer a few things about the character and the setting   First, she shares a room with her sister because the text states that her bed was next to her sisters.  Also, I can infer that she had to get up early to do something or go somewhere today, but her sister did not have to go because she (Jessica) is still asleep.  Next, I know the character is the narrator of the story from this opening paragraph.  I can tell from the words that the story will be told from her point of view.  Finally, I know Jessica and the main character live in an area where the seasons change because she states it was "cold for November". This made me think that the weather was changing.  The quote above may only be the first few lines of the story, but they allowed me to make many inferences.
