We have discussed schema (background or prior knowledge) many times this year.  Discuss (write a response) on how you used schema while reading your current book.

Example:

Looking for Alaska
John Green
Pg. 90

While reading this book, I feel I am using my schema to understand the character Alaska better.  I have a friend who seems to have a lot in common with this character.  They are both free spirits.  Because I have a friend like Alaska, I find her quirkiness endearing.  She is a likable character to me even though she does some very odd things.  For example she has a candle burn off and makes a mountain of hot wax.  She spends pretty much hours doing this, which seems odd.  When I read this part, I could imagine my friend doing the same thing--creating art in a very abstract way :)  The connection I have to Alaska and her personality is one of the reasons I am really enjoying this book.  I am finding that this book is a hard one to put down!

I am still reading the book Jabba the Puppett by Tom Angleberger things are starting to slow down and there is not that much action or excitement going on in the story. But based on all of the other books in the series that i read I have a feeling that some random awsome thing is going to come out of no where and surprise us.

I am currently reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio, and I am on page 11. I used my schema to infer how the main character, August, looks like. For example, they said when he was born, August had a cleft lip and has had many surgeries. Also, they said most people don’t want to be his friend because no one can really relate to him. I am really enjoying this book so far.

I am reading Boys Without Names by Kashmira Sheth. I am on page 10. So far I am using my schema by kind of being able to understand the language and the way they act. I believe that Boys Without Names is in Pakistan because in a previous book I read, Words in the Dust by Trent Reedy took place also in Pakistan. I can infer that it takes place in Pakistan because he calls his father Baba in Boys Without Names and it also does in Words in the Dust. I also am using my schema because they are speaking Arabic in both books.

I am reading schooled by Gordan Korman. I am on page 37. I can use my schema on understanding why he is nervous and if people are going to like him or not. I can also use it because I know what it feels like to have a parent in the hospital you do not know if they are going to be okay and you freak out. Cap's grandma is his protector and his teacher and he is lost without her.

I'm reading the book Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne. I'm on page 271. I use schema in my story to learn about the main character Axel. I can also compare it to a person I know, not very adventurous or brave. I use it to learn more about his traits and characteristics. Throughout the book I've learned a lot about him, but he has also changed throughout the story too.

I was reading The Book Thief and I used prior knowledge to understand this book better. This book takes place in Germany in the time of world war 1. When they talk about fall out shelters I understand what they mean because during that time they were bombed a lot. Sometimes this book can be a little hard to understand but I am able to still get the gist of it. Knowing the history of this story helps me understand the story and keep me interested in the book.

I have finished the book The Old Willis Place by Mary Downing Hahn. I use schema in my story to figure out they Diana and Georgie are ghosts. I can compare it to a person that I know because one of my friends says that he/she is able to see ghosts and that he/she has seen and communicated with them before. I don’t think that it’s true because I don’t believe in ghosts.

I am reading Losing it by Erin Fry. I am on page 173This is about a kid that is overweight and his dad is in the hospital. He wants to run cross country but he friend doesn't agree and won't support him on this. I feel I use schema while reading because I wanted to try out for something but none of my friends agreed with me. I was really mad at them and didn't be want to be friends with them anymore.

    Life As We Knew It

I am reading the book Life as We New It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. I am on page 92. A prediction from my prior knowledge is when everyone was watching at night waiting for the asteroid to hit the moon I knew that the asteroid was smaller than the moon so when it hit the moon the moon moved out of its orbit because of the asteroid it looked bigger in the sky because it was closer. I can predict that if the moon keeps coming closer that if it does hit the earth the moon is bigger and it would crush one whole side of the earth killing a lot of people and also maybe moving the earth out of its orbit. So the whole solar system is now ruined

    Half-Minute Horrors

I am reading HALF-MINUTE HORRORS by Lemony Snicket, Neil Gaiman, James Patterson and many more authors. I use schema when a women in my book was babysitting and the boy was upstairs in his room when a killer came to the door, with my past prior knowledge I knew she was going to kill the killer because in almost all horror stories or movies the bad guy or killer always not necessarily dies but gets caught by the cops or injured bad enough to run away or killed.

I am reading the book Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass. I am on page 47. Using my prior knowledge, I can infer some things about Jeremy's best friend, Lizzy. Since she's always stealing things and getting into trouble, I can infer that she has had a rough past and bad family history. I can infer this because I have met several people who started out good, but ended up bad, and I soon learned that they had a rough childhood, or something happened to them that affected them emotionally. So, maybe Lizzy always takes things because she had a bad childhood or a very emotional past.

The Dangerous Days of Daniel X
    by James Patterson
    Pg. 95

In this book, I am using my schema because they reference a lot of real world things. Such as the book, Water for Elephants, Samuel L. Jackson, Gatorade, and Tiger woods. All this helps me realize what a great author James Patterson is to add all this in his book and it helps me visualize the story better. Also in this book, the main character Daniel has a very annoying sister. My sister is very annoying so I can relate to it.

In this book, I am using my schema because this book has some real world references like Winston Churchill the person in charge of the army of Britain is in charge of the army in the book too. Also I used my schema when they said in the first book of this series that Deryn had to dress up as a boy just to join the air navy. I used it because I knew that women still weren't allowed in the armed forces during world war 1 and 2.

I am reading the book Prodigy by Marie Lu. I am currently on page 223. One way I used schema to help me read my book was by connecting the plight in the story to an event that the US has had in the past. In this book, people are rioting because a new Elector(similar to president in modern society) was promoted. Also, they found out that the country's most wanted criminal has not died. Everyone had expected him to be executed by the government when he was caught. I connected this to the times when the US had segregation. The people who were being segregated would riot out in the streets and cause lots of pandemonium and havoc to everyday life. This helps me understand the book more because I can imagine the chaos that must be going on in this futuristic USA.

While reading this book, I am using my schema to understand the setting in the book. In the book, Molly is getting an autograph signing from a famous basketball player. I can use my schema that she is a basketball fan and loves the sport. Also, she loves this to because she is coming out to get an autograph signing. Also, I can infer that the book will be based about basketball because the book started talking about it right at the start.

I am reading the book called, "The Titans Curse" by: Rick Riordan. I am on page 47. I used schema to help me read my book because one of the main characters, Thalia, is just like one of my friends. Thalia is very aggressive, brave, and does not care what anybody thinks of her. She also has kind of a dark personality. I grew to like the character because she reminds me of my friend and I really like both of their unique personalities.

I have used schema many times in this book. One example is how Sophie is currently feeling at this moment. In the past, Josh had doubted Nicholas Flamel and his ways, since he has not given the twins the full truth. Because of this, Sophie started to believe his ways. I can relate to this because some people follow a family member’s advice or warnings, therefore persuading them. This is the same case because Josh tells Sophie that she should not fully trust Nicholas Flamel especially because of some of the horrible things he did in the past.

  19. Children of the Lamp: The Day of the Djinn Warriors - Bk 4
    P.B.Kerr
    Pg # 250

While reading The Day of the Djinn Warriors, Philippa, one of the two main characters, and one of the twins that are djinn (genie), granted a wish that caused a very bad sort of events to happen. One police officer saved her life when she was very tired and granted him 3 wishes. His final wish is that no could eat “Pate de foie gras” in New York. In the text, it said “She could hardly know that something as well-meant as this (the wish by the policemen) could have consequences.” I used my schema to determine that something really bad happened that affected the course that is happening now because a lot of things happen to the twins, Philippa and John Gaunt. Using the schema that I have built up from reading the previous three books, I was also able to tell that the wish would have an impact on their current problem at hand. Apparently, it always happens to them! I really like this book because I never want to stop reading! I recommend the series to everyone.

While I am reading Drama I could use my schema in many ways. I feel like I can use my schema most to find out what Callie one of the main characters personality really is. Based on my schema I can infer that Callie is a very self conches person. I know this because she is always worrying about what everyone is saying about her and about if somebody likes her or not. For example she is always fixing her hair and making sure she looks good around Greg, a guy she has a crush on, she wants him to really like her but Callie is not exactly the most popular person like Greg is. But Callie is still trying to impress him even though she knows she probably will never have a chance with him.

While I am reading the book No Cream Puffs by Karen Day, I make a mental note when using my schema for comparing/contrasting to the story. I definitely understand the character, because she has many similarities to my little sister. I can compare/contrast my sister with the character because they are both tomboys or not girly-girls. They both like to play more aggressive sports, such as football and fencing. The contrasting part between them is that my sister WANTS to play baseball and the character in the book IS playing baseball. I am reading this book and imagining my sister. I have continued to read Cinder by Marrissa Meyer. The book is basically a futuristic version of Cinderella. The book basically is Cinderella with a twist. For example the main character, Cinder, is half human and half robot, a cyborg really. Also, I know from growing up with watching different movies about Cinderella and reading plenty of books about her that she has two evil stepsisters and a stepmother. But in this case she has one nice sister and one evil sister and and evil stepmom. Although the book is different from Cinderella on so many levels it is still the really the same.

I can infer that Donavon even knows that he doesn't belong in the gifted school, the Academy. I can infer that Donavon likes his friends at the Academy than his friends at his real school. I just started the book Pretties by Scott Westerfeld and am on page 16. Pretties is the second book in the Uglies series. I have used my schema to find out more on setting and how the main character is feeling. When I first started my book I was a little confused on where the character was, she was talking about a party and how she hated casual parties but I learned in the last book I read from the series I learned that when the characters turn 16 they get surgery to be pretty and get to live a life of luxury. Knowing this I can assume that with the luxury comes parties. The main character seemed a little board and unsatisfied with her new life. I know this because she was acting as everything great was just ok. She was just invited o a huge party and doesn't even care. I know that the character was never all that popular so this should be exciting to her.

While reading this book, I feel like I am using Schema to understand the main character clementine better. Clementine has Tourette syndrome and I don't exactly know what it feels to be around with that or have it. While reading this book I have to use other knowledge to get a better idea on what clementine has. When she goes to school no one looks at her the same and she has to live an unormal life. Like when she takes medicine, it comes with effects and that means missing things and just not being able to enjoy herself. For example in the book clementine goes to her friends house and then her mom has to come pick her up because she fell asleep from the side effects of the medicine she takes.
