The Giver-Blog Post Utopian Society
You have been asked by the government to develop an ideal society (Utopian). In this society, all members must be equal. Racism, violence, crime, homelessness, poverty, divorce, and hunger cannot exist. Choose three problems to remove from society and explain how you'd remove the problems. Will you change laws? How can you contribute to making society a perfect place?

I feel as if all 6 of the words have similar definitions but the ones I chose cover all the words and more. I picked the violence, crime and poverty to be illegal in my utopia. I think if these types of things didn't exist there wouldn't be hunger, racism or homelessness. If I had the option to change laws I would probably insist on having plenty of color and let everyone embrace there personalities. Overall my society would be perfect but not to the point where everyone is he same.
I agree, they should be allowed to have color. At least the people would get to make some choices.
DeleteI disagree to some extent. I think that this could be stable to a point but conflicting opinions would quickly tear this place up depending on control.

I love how you said that it would be perfect but not everybody would be the same. Because in all of the other sci-fi books, there's a perfect society, but everybody is the same, and that usually causes the problems.

First I would get rid of stores and have the government deliver the needs for the number of people in the household and choose who lives in that household (government chooses your spouse). This prevents crime and divorce. It reduces crime because everyone will get the right amount of food and no one will divorce because the government choose properly of who lives together. Everyone will have a home and a bike, no cars. This reduces homeless people and violence. No one will try to steal anything because they already have they same stuff as everyone else. Finally I would make multiple communities with fenced walls so no know could get in or out. In these communities everyone will have the same skin colors. Different communities will have different skin colors. This prevents racism because everyone will have the same skin colors and the people won't know that there are other communities because they are fenced.

I would remove racism, violence, and divorce from our society. I would remove these by spreading peace because if everyone was peaceful than these three things would not happen. I would change some laws because I think some of the laws are not reasonable.
I also would choose those three. This would put peace into place and maybe everyone will be friends. Maybe there wouldn't be enemies. Maybe everyone would be allies.

I would change the sameness of divorce, racism, and poverty. I would change divorce because I think that all adults must choose who they would like to marry and if their marriage with someone they thought they loved was not going so well, then I believe that they should have the choice of staying married or not. I would change racism because I think that everyone is equal no matter what their skin color is or what religion they are. They should be able to be whatever color they are and believe in the things that they believe in. Finally I would change poverty. Now the reason I would change this is not because I think some people should be rich and some poor but because I do not think that everyone having the same pay or the same job is a good idea. I think that people should be able to choose what kind of job they want to work even if it is a low paying job. So if some people worked for a higher paying job, they would be more wealthy than a person with a low payed job. I would only change laws that I felt should be changed to make a society more free. I would not try to contribute to make a society a perfect place because I believe that nothing is perfect and with all the memories in the world, so many of them would be taken away if it were a perfect society.
I agree about what you said about racism! However, I don't think a society would be interesting if all of these elements were taken away...it would bring back that whole idea of Sameness!

I think I would take competition out of everyone's everyday lives. To do this I would make it so people didn't have to make any decisions of there own decisions. So the people would get what they deserved or what fit them, they wouldn't have to work for it. I would also make it so everyone was made to look equal so nobody can feel bad about looks. Once a person is born they will get surgery to make them a supper human. Great health and always beautiful. I would also make it so if there is a flaw in government or the people we would spoil the people into loving there lives. To get rid of homelessness give houses to parents that don't cost money and that don't have any thing wrong with them. To get rid of hunger make farms on every land that give enough food for the whole area and for everyone. I think to get rid of divorce you would have to make sure that they like each other or you could outlaw divorce so after you're married their is no divorce.
I agree with you. I would do the same by giving homes to the homeless.

First I would have all governments gathered then Divided into sections across the globe into small groups. This would solve the problem of different nations thinking different and keeping a maintained balance. Next I would try to fix climate. I would figure some kind of bubble that could hologram a picture of the sun trapping the perfect heat and appearing the sun to be there with light from the hologram. Finally I would try to fix hunger. I would have everyone equally cared for given supplies and homes to go about daily life in an orderly fashion.

DeleteHonestly, I think that in the world governments are always divided up, the UN, CIA, FBI, these organizations all work well together with other countries. For example the FBI or CIA work with Englands Interpol all the time. Even right now Chinese and Malaysian governments are working together to solve the problems of the people like the recent plane crash. Also, replicating light is already possible it happens through the light bulb. Anyways, controlling climate would get a lot of mixed opinions, because of how you want to control the weather people will accuse you of being like a false god or something. You have a good idea to stop hunger but honestly like in the giver if no one knows what hunger is no one will have the wisdom that comes with it. Personally, my relatives grew up not getting that much food. That helps them realise that they need to save money and use it wisely.
Nathan Z.
DeleteYou have very interesting ideas but what problems would they solve, and in some situations there are already easier ways to solve them. You also solved hunger mostly by fixing climate, therefor making endless crop seasons.
To help create a perfect society, I would probably try and get rid of whatever causes problems, from skin color to religous beliefs. There would be no guns or any firepower in the country, except in the armies. So that already makes racism, violence, and crime go down. I would also have the government provide food, shelter, and/or money to whoever needs it, as to bring down homlessness, poverty, and hunger in the country. And if there is nothing a married couple disagrees about, and they do not need to worry about food and money, there is no reason for them to consider divorce.

Because people divorce all the time and people don't wan't to be the same as their best friend or the same as a older person. if there could be no hunger kids in Africa would have food. If the schools where the same so academically the scores on tests and the teachers would all be the same.

I would make a law that if you hit anyone or fight or steal or anything like that and you get caught you get death penalty. That should scare people and make them not do it. In order to create an ideal society, I would remove hunger, crime, and divorce. First, I would make sure there is enough food in grocery stores, restaurants, and entertainment buildings. This would allow people to buy any food that is needed, without having to struggle. In addition, I would enforce very strict, solemn, and severe punishments for people who commit even the smallest crimes. This would scare people and force them to do the right thing. It would help reduce the number of crimes in the society. Lastly, I would make it so that the government chooses your spouse. This saves the trouble of relationships, love, and divorce. So you don't have to get a divorce and pay money and do all that extra work. Now, your spouse is automatically given to you at a ceremony or celebration. The spouse that you receive would have similar interests, so you won't have to disagree on anything. Therefore, divorces are unnecessary. All in all, hunger, crime, and divorce are three aspects that would be removed from this society.

To make a perfect society, I would limit exposure to things such as racism because if they didn't know it existed it would be far less likely to happen. I would also try to have minimal 'laws.' I would also try to eliminate currency and have all payments be made with barter. I would also strongly encourage having only 1-3 children and encourage unwanted or extra children to be put up for adoption. Children put up for adoption can be given to couples or individuals who do not wish or are unable to have children. Each person will be given equal opportunities and support by the government.

The problem if equality through could be easily solved if I were to create a Utopian society. People within the society would no longer have to pay for food and supplies necessary to sustain life they were routinely fulfilled with such supplies. Citizens will no longer need to spend money on clothes and food when the government issues each citizen to have the same amount monthly. Therefore, poverty is unable to prevail in a society with such standards. This also goes hand-in-hand with the solution to hunger. If food no longer has a price hanging over it, starvation is not possible when supplied with everything they need. Another problem that can be easily resolved is homelessness. For this state of living to be eliminated, the government will also have to issue dwellings for all families. For all three of these ideas to be accomplished, many different laws concerning what the government has control of will have to be revised. All of the efforts, however, will benefit the society in making it a perfect living condition.

Also i would and would not want to get rid of crime because certin people in the world think diffrent and dont like to follow laws so they just go out and commit a crime because theey have nothing better to do or they dont like a person for who they are so thats why I would always get rid of racism anywhere.

DeleteI agree with not having racism because it hurts peoples feelings sometimes when others make fun of them because of their race.
To make a society for a perfect place, I would remove homelessness, poverty and crime. In order to get rid of these, as being asked by the government I would consider the government to give homes to homeless people with no cost. Maybe like in The Giver make a place where people can be taken care of even if they don't have money. Poverty can get rid of by giving money to people and providing them with care. Crime would be hard to get rid of because it would be people's choices of what they would do. I could change the punishment so people wouldn't commit crimes as much. For example, maybe rising the fine cost for doing something wrong.
ReplyDeleteI agree with getting rid of homeless because everyone deserves to have a home or a shelter to live in.

I would eliminate violence, crime and racism. First I would eliminate violence, because this causes a lot of deaths and injury's. I would try to give everyone the same kind of living environment, so there would be no competition. I would have people on guard to make sure that everyone is safe, and they don't have to worry about someone hurting them. With no violence the community would be a much safer place. To reduce crime, I would make sure that someone doesn't have better things than anyone else. I would make everyone get a job with the same amount of pay. This way no one would have more money than anyone else. This could reduce crime because everyone would have the same amount of pay, so that everything is fair. If someone wanted some sort of object that can hurt or do something to someone than he/she would have to work as person which is necessary to have one. I would eliminate racism because everyone has there special way of living. They celebrate different things, and people should do that. Everyone would be free to do what they want with there religion. If someone does judge someone with there religion than that person will have a punishment, so he/she wouldn't do it again.

The first that I would diminish is people not getting the job that they are talented at. I would do this by studying how people act. This will tell others what there talent is. In addition to people having the job that they were meant to have, another problem I can remove from society is hunger. I would do this by supplying everyone an abundant amount of food. The food would be delivered to each household weekly for the work that are assigned to. Lastly, I would make sure everyone has decent houses. I will do this by having the same blueprint for each house. For these reasons Utopian would be a good society.

If I were to make a perfect society is that I would first give everyone the same house so no one is homeless and there is no poverty. I would do this by knocking everything down and then just building houses big enough for four people. Next, everyone will receive the same amount of food, not big portions just enough to keep them strong and healthy. I would do this to reduce hunger. For jobs, everyone works to either produce food, or materials to build houses, they would not get paid, no one would get paid. Everyone receives the same education, and only weapons are allowed for people who can legally hunt. I can contribute to make society a better place by volunteering in various places.

I would get rid of violence, crime and poverty. First I would get rid of violence because a ton of peoples deaths come from violence. Also, life changing injuries come from violence and people fight and when it comes to violence it can change a persons life. Second, I would get rid of crime because peoples sentimental objects and expensive objects could be stolen and nobody wants to have their stuff stolen that you have had for a long time and if you saved up for an object and worked hard for it then the person who stole it wouldn't even know. Then I would get rid of poverty because little money can lead to hunger and hunger can lead to starvation and you can die, and if parents have kids and they have little money the kids may not be healthy. Also, with little money the parents may not be able to pay for their child's education.I would make contributions by making sure everyone has a respectable house and making sure everyone has something to eat. These reasons are why Utopia would be a very good society.

I would change the discrimination between genders and the discrimination between races. Men and women would have the same opportunities for things like sports job offers and attention on things like TV. Because on TV sports show mostly men and few people watch women sports, same with different races. People would all have the same opportunity for education, like if their family needs money for an education, give their parents a job opportunity or send them back to school. I would also change things like the amount of money people make would be based on how hard they work not on how much money the movie they were in makes for example. This would make things more fair in a way that everyone has an equal opportunity not where everyone literally has the same things.

If I were to create a Utopian society, I would remove hunger and poverty. I would also make everybody educated. I think it is very important to remove hunger because thousands of people die just from hunger and it makes me sad that some kids don't even know when they will ever get to eat. I also think poverty is a big problem in society because kids who grow up in poverty don't have money to get a good education, so they won;t get good jobs, and they could end up being burglars or drug addicts to get money because they didn't get an education because they didn't have the money to go to school because they lived in poverty. I also would like to make everybody educated because I believe that everybody has a fair chance in life, and people who can't get an education because they are too poor, its not very fair. If people are educated, they won't end up doing drugs, or getting depressed, or doing bad things because they will know what the dangers of doing those things are because they were educated about it in school.

If I had been asked by the government to help develop the "ideal society" and only be able to take out three complications/flaws from the new Utopia, I would choose: Racism, Violence, and Homelessness. How I would remove racism by inserting a chip into the back of one's neck, and be able to process their thoughts, words, and actions. If any individual disobeys the 'No Racism' rule, they will be punished; the punishment will vary depending on how badly they went against the rule. As for violence, if violence was removed, so would crime. But solving it would take drastic measures. Security cameras everywhere, a special ID to let someone purchase something or go somewhere; basically high tech equipment would be needed. But all for the sake of no bad actions happening. Eventually, the violence situation would be solved and so then crime would disappear. Lastly, we would remove poverty by giving equality to everyone. Same foods, houses, living conditions, etc. This then would take away homelessness. These are just a few thoughts on how I would solve three problems in the new Utopia.

In Utopian I would remove racism, hunger and obesity. So in Utopian there would be two sections. One for whites and one for colored. But these sections would never see each other because there are huge boarders that go extremely high into the air with barbed wire fence but both sections would work exactly the same as they are still one society. Since these sections would not see each other there would be to racism. For food each day they would take pills. One for every meal, so three pills a day. These pills would have all the exact nutrients needed for you and your body so no one would get hungry. And also therefore everyone would be eating and consuming the right amounts so everyone would be around the same size and this would deny obesity.
I love the idea of pills. I would love that because sometimes I over or under eat. I also love the idea of keeping the whites and colored separated!

In addition, a restriction on violence will lower the chance of racism.

If I had to get rid of three problems I would eliminate poverty, violence, and Racism. I would remove these specific problems for many reasons. If I remove poverty, this can help get rid of homelessness because people are able to pay their mortgage and buy a house. Also if there is no poverty, people can get other materials such as food, clothing, etc. Second, if I eliminate violence people will not fight and destroy property and can help decrease crime. last, if I get rid of Racism, people are able to not judge people and they can get along. Also there will be less bullying that can affect the person because of racism.
I agree with you on racism because I feel like everyone should be treated equally no matter what race.

If I could choose my ideal society I would make sure there is no hunger, racism, and homelessness. One way that I would eliminate hunger would be I would make a law that each family needs to have a certain amount of food in there house during a week so that nobody would have to starve. And if the family can't afford the food needed then they can get financial help from the government. This could help the society in many ways one way is that nobody would have to suffer the pain and everyone would not have to worry about not having enough food to feed their family.I would also eliminate racism because racism offends many people. It also causes lots of problems between many people and it can lead to other bad things. I would make it a law so if you use racism you will have a very bad consequence. This would help the society by not having as many fights and disagreements because many arguments are caused by racism. Finally I would eliminate homelessness because it is a very big problem in the world. I would eliminate it by if they can’t afford a home the government will assist them and eventually they will have to pay them back. This would help the society because homelessness is a really big problem but it can be solved or even prevented with a little help.

One other way i would end racism would have blacks come in that state and protest the they are equal because they are both human and they are just like White people. 3 things I would change in society are tax, able to be arm with a weapon, and divorce. For tax I would remove them because there are so many bills to pay and people may have to live on streets because they can not pay them. This would solve the plan for homelessness. Also I would change the law of being able to have a gun or a weapon. This would help people’s risk danger and be safer. Lastly I would change divorce. I think adults may love someone but then soon may not. If their marriage is not going well I think they have the choice of getting a divorce. This would make the world a better place but not perfect. I really do not believe in a perfect world and so not think it can be done.

I would remove homelessness because then people would stay off the streets and be warm at night. Next, I would probably get rid of crime because then less people would die/get hurt each year. Lastly, I would get rid of racism because then people wouldn't get made fun of for being who they are. I would change little laws but not major laws like speed limits. To make a society a perfect place it would need a strong government to make good decisions.

The three things that I would change would be make foods without soy, make a law for a limit of calories and sodium, and to make it mandatory to take an adequate class when you are younger. It would be more expensive but, the food would be better for you. If you have too much sot it can clot up your arteries and cause a heart attack. I would have a limit on food calories and sodium because at fast food restaurants if you have a meal it adds up to the total amount of calories that you have in a day. Sodium causes increase in blood pressure. I also think that kids should take adequate classes because I have experienced very rude kids when I was younger. They would talk back to adults, hold a fork and knife wrong, and disrespect their parents.

My ideal society would eliminate hunger, homelessness, and racism. A law that can help eliminate hunger is each family living in the community is provided with a certain amount of food each day by the government. A law that can help eliminate homelessness is each family is provided with a house that has a low, yearly fee of $65. A law that can ensure that racism is eliminated is if someone in the community says something racist to someone else, they have to spend a month in jail but will still be provided with food. These laws will help create a utopian society because everyday each and every family is provided with food, shelter, and the consequence of being a racist person will lead to time in jail.

I would remove the difference between the poor and rich (poverty). I would first take all the money in the world, no matter what currency, what race, and what class they were in (high, middle, low). I would then take one currency so I can eventually split the money in a currency that everyone will use. I would then take the number of people in the world and divide the money equally. I would also get rid of homelessness the same way. Violence will be taken away, but not war because war can be fought orally. Races and groups would be able to negotiate and not kill or hurt in anyway than words. I would not change any laws that the U.S. has made. Other countries may be different but the U.S. has good government and policies. Contributing by giving ideas and thoughts can give a bigger and general law or idea that can help solve future problems and everything will be easier.
Vineeth R
DeleteBy taking all the money in the world, you could potentially take more from one country than another, because the worth of the currency that country uses could be higher. So for example, if you take all the money from the US, and all the money from Ethiopia, you would be taking more money from the US than Ethiopia, therefore the system is not fair.

I would get rid of poverty by collecting all of the money in the world no matter what type, dollars, pesos, euros, etc.., and then split it evenly between every family based on their size but then speed up the mints so that if a family is in desperate need, the government will give them some. I would get rid of homelessness by having a family apply for a house by where the want it and I will hook them up to a lie detector to see if they lie about who they are living with. And maybe there might be no solution, because the world is a big place, unless we can damage all weaponry and do a rule of people having free food and free things, and have it all the same so people dont get angry at others
