Please find a quote from the book you are reading to demonstrate your knowledge of an inference.  Explain your quote and the evidence used to make your inference from the text.

Example:

Crow Call
Lois Lowry
Pg 1-2
Include your name at end of post.

"It's morning, early, barely light, cold for November.  At home, in the bed next to mine, Jessica, my older sister, still sleeps. But my bed is empty."

From this excerpt I can infer a few things about the character and the setting   First, she shares a room with her sister because the text states that her bed was next to her sisters.  Also, I can infer that she had to get up early to do something or go somewhere today, but her sister did not have to go because she (Jessica) is still asleep.  Next, I know the character is the narrator of the story from this opening paragraph.  I can tell from the words that the story will be told from her point of view.  Finally, I know Jessica and the main character live in an area where the seasons change because she states it was "cold for November". This made me think that the weather was changing.  The quote above may only be the first few lines of the story, but they allowed me to make many inferences.

I can infer from this quote that the chair is part of the desk and that the whole thing only has a little light on the chair and desk. The complicated machine is a lie detector I know this from a little before it says that he passed background check and needs lie detector

I'm reading the book The Great Fire. One night a fire broke out at a house in the city of Chicago. The fire 15 minutes old its already burning the house barn and anything in its way. The buildings in the city where made out of wood some where made of stone and bricks. The firefighters where getting cinched and the lost hair on there arms and heads. Now some house by the fire are about to catch fire. Its taken 16 hours to take to put out the first part. The neighbors had a party so the fire was oblivious the wind was coming in from the west and heading trowed the city fast. all everyone wanted to do was just rest for at least 5 minutes. But if they did it would be even harder the stop.

"Someone...help...me!" he screamed; each word ripped his throat raw.

From this sentence, I can infer many things about what is happening. I can tell that Thomas is alone, and in trouble because is asking for help. Also, I can tell that he has been yelling for a long time. His throat wouldn't hurt if he just started yelling.

"Coward" "...This needs to stop" "He takes the knife and puts it through the bread"

I can infer that he is mad because he says that it needs to stop and he takes the knife and puts it in the bread. This shows that he is made because he is putting is anger in the bread and he says it is enough. I can infer that he will beat up the person that said coward because he is really strong and get angry easily.

    " I think i have found something, i think it's a shotgun shell"
I chose this quote because this quote really explains a lot of inferring. This quote can explain a lot of inferring because the quote can show how Stanley thinks that the thing he found is a shell of a bullet or a slug shell or something else that's not a shell. Some of his friends think is a fossil or a metallic tube he found. Next i know that this character is the main character, so he is the one that own's the tube know, not all the other people there. So i think that this quote really shows an example of an inference because this can show how Stanley can guess how what he found is something good or bad so he can get the day of because he found something good.

In the book a boy beat up Bud and then told his mom it was in self defence and then Bud got in a lot of trouble from his care holders

" Some trader ruined our operation" I think that in Zoobreak someone is out to get them like they know what Griffin is trying to do or it is someone from the group who is a trader. What that quote is saying is that some betrayed them and they could not successfully do there operation and complete there important mission. I think it is one of the zoo keepers who is trying to help them like a double cross. I am predicting that the person who took the boat is the guy or girl who stole the monkey too.

I am currently reading Ranger's Apprentice: Burning Bridge by John Flanagan and I am on page 45. The quote that I chose to make an inference from is, "His (Horace) discomfort increased as Gilan continued the demonstration." Some context for this quote is that Gilan (a ranger) is showing Will (apprentice) how to defend against a swordsman using "the double-knife defense." Horace is the "swordsman" and is using a big sword to demonstrate. From this quote I can infer that Horace feels like he is being made look foolish. I can infer this because he is becoming uncomfortable in what Gilan is showing Will. Gilan is countering all of Horace's attacking moves and Will is enjoying the demonstration. Horace feels like he has nothing against a ranger being a swordsman.

"Exactly!", he agreed. "Nothing! No smoke from the chimney's. No people in the streets. It looks as empty as the border post."

From this quote I can infer that the main character expected the area to be inhabited. He thought there would be people roaming around like it was a normal day. I can also infer that the main character had experienced the same confusion earlier at a border post because he says the village was as empty as the border post.

I am reading the book The Ruins Of Gorlan by John Flanagan. I am currently on page 90. The quote I found is when Will contemplates “ Would he be able to ride Tug”. I can certainly tell that will wants to impress Halt and Bob. But he is nervous because he has never ridden a horse before. I also can infer that he is thinking will he get hurt or will he fall off the minute he gets on. This is probably going to take place in Bobs back yard which is an open field.

"She runs into the back of the room at the community center and gives Rory a hug. I get a sinking feeling in my stomach."

From these two sentences I can infer a couple things. First, I can infer that Rory's friend hadn't seen her in a long time because it says "she ran to the..." I think that her running is a sign of longing to see her best friend, and that she missed her. Also, I can infer that Tara (the main character) is jealous of Rory and her friend's relationship because the text says, "I get a sinking feeling in my stomach." This usually means someone is jealous, or sad about something. In this case, Tara might be sad because she doesn't have a relationship with Rory like her other friend does.

From this quote, I can infer that Greg doesn't like riding in the back of Rodrick's van. I am reading the book The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch. I just started this book today, so I am on page 8. One quote that I thought was good for inferencing was, "I wondered how long it would be until they made it to the top and the whole thing finally collapsed. Ten years? Twenty? Would I be Dad's age? Grandpa's?" I think that this means since they are experiencing a breakdown in society, and nothing is being cared for, he wonders how long it will take until everything goes crazy. I think this because on the pages before and after it, it talks about how Stephen and his dad lost their house, and everyone is looting and stealing, so Stephen and his dad are hiding from the majority of society to be as safe as they can be.

“I’ve already told him twice that my name was Bud, not Buddy.”

While I was reading this book, I found out that this boy’s parents has died and he is now living with a foster home. Unfortunately, the 12-year-old boy that lives there is bullying him everyday. Also, this boy hates being called Buddy because his name gets confused with “Buddy” instead of “Bud”. Now, this boy has done terrible things. He has stuck up a Ticonderoga pencil up Bud’s nose and shoved it up all the way to the letter R. This boy keeps lying to his mother that he hasn't done anything wrong. Now, I infer that Bud is going to get some revenge. Either he will punch the boy or just leave the house.

From this quote I can infer that my character Axel, is really scared from the first sentence of the quote, and I could tell that in the middle of them is some sort of pit. I could also infer that this pit is really deep down, and a place you would need a rope for. Later in that paragraph it said that Axel and his uncle had to go down a huge pit, with a rope. I could also tell it was a pit because in the story it said ‘’ Its walls were perpendicular, and were thick with sharp edges.’’ This quote helped me with were the setting is taking place, and what and how the main character is feeling.

My mom and dad got divorced when I was four and they pretty much hate each other. “This building used to be the O’Hare Airport, one of the busiest airports in the country. Now it’s the headquarters of the Bureau of Genetic Warfare..... It’s an agency of the United States government. I know all the words she’s saying - except I’m not sure what an “airport” or “united states” is...”

This quote shows me that the story is in the future. I can infer that the future, filled with new concepts, didn’t keep anything from the past (current times for us). I thought this is because the O’Hare airport is currently one of the most busiest airports in the country. And our country is called the United States. So I know that their new society adapted a variety of new things. I can also infer that only the older people were taught or knew about the history of what they now call their society.

“The students gawked. Their teacher was a trim woman with confident shoulders, a clean face, and an amazing total of twelve tiny hoops hugging the curves of her ears, but she still looked ridiculous, because her head was below their feet and her khaki clad rear was bobbing up and down. They would have started whispering and poking and giggling, except that Miss loupe began calling the roll.”

From this sentence, I can infer that the setting is started out in a school, since there are students and a teacher. And also it must be the first day of school because they were looking at the teacher and her features, meaning that it’s their first time there. And the teacher was about to call to see if the students are there, so they do that around the first week of school or so. Also, from reading this text, the talking right now is the narrator. They also must think their teacher is weird because they said they would've started “whispering and poking and giggling”.

From this excerpt a can infer a few things about this new character. First, I can tell that the man has been in a very bad accident and some how got his missing fingers into Everlost. Next, I can infer that the "Everflesh attached to his living flesh was an angry red line that sparked like a short circuit." Maybe important for later in the chapter. Also, this man sounds like he maybe bad instead of helping.

On page 102 “His face stays calm but I can hear the urgency in his tone.”Can you do it without getting caught?” ” At this point in the story, the main character, Cassia, read a poem and was caught by a boy named Ky. To us reading a poem is nothing but from this quote you can tell that this is a big problem. Plus this book is a science fiction and is really futuristic and since they can only have one object from the past, so I can infer the words of a person from the past is much more dangerous than an object from the past.

The quote I found in the book to help me infer the character was on page 24 and it states “ ...In beautiful, glamorous L.A. it was seven o’clock in the morning and I,Julia Johnson, woke up to the sound of dripping water. It came from the leaky faucet in the bathroom sink.” I can infer that her plumbing is not a reassuring, fixed kind of sound. It seems that she is not able to afford the correct plumbing of that it can’t be fixed even though they tried so hard to fix it. From the pictures of the book cover, I can infer that Julia is the one with the Pauper hat and is the Pauper because a princess is not going to have a leaky faucet.

All spelled the same way with a K not a C. He zipped through school easily until it was time for college. He had just been dumped by the 19th Kathrine. "Dawn is breaking through the windows. The Capitol has a misty, haunted air. My head aches and I must have bitten into the side of my cheek in the night. My tongue probes the ragged flesh and I taste blood."
From this excerpt, I can infer that Katniss is really scared and frightened. It says, "...I taste blood." It also says, "I must have bitten into the side of my cheek." This shows that she didn't even realize that she had bitten her cheek, which makes her look scared. Also, I am making an inference that Katniss is almost certain that she will die. The text states, "The Capitol has a misty, haunted air." The word haunted just makes me think about death, so I can imagine her feeling that way.

I think this because after he said what he did say (Your sister did leave with us but we were attacked by the factionless, and she... didn't make it.) he said that there was so much that that phrase did not say. Meaning he wished he had said more but he didn't think that it would be necessary.

The book i'm reading is Batman Arkham City by Paul Dini. “Except I know there’s not going to be a next time” is a good quote to show inference. I infer that the Joker is going to die. The mood in this setting is dark. The reason why this dark is because Joker knows he’s going to die but he still plans to get some revenge from getting defeated by Batman. From this quote it is the Jokers perspective on things. The reason why I think Joker is dying is because he said “the titan formula did something to me...I’d be crazier than usual to deny it.” With Joker taking this drug its not going to be long until he dies!

From this piece of evidence I can infer about what is happening and is going to happen to the main character Carrie. First of all in the text it talks about how carrie has to take these pills and with her taking the pills if gives off all of these side effects. One of them is getting really tired really early. I could picture what was going to happen from the description in the text. I inferred from prior knowledge of the book that Philby stands for intelligence, Maybek stands for artistry, Charlene stands for athleticism, and Willa is computer knowledge. Earlier in the book, it tells about how smart Philby is and he says a lot of smarty pants facts throughout it. Also, Maybek’s aunt owns a pottery store. When Finn and Charlene, they see his beautiful portrait of the Magic Kingdom on a coffee mug he painted. It talks about how fast and athletic Charlene is. She plays a lot of sports and is a great runner. In one chapter, the friends meet on the VMK ( Virtual Magic Kingdom ) to discuss the plans and it talks about how Willa's character is all tricked out. Also, when assigning roles, Willa got the job for research on the computer.

I inferred a lot of things about one of the main characters Gus from this passage. First, I inferred that Gus is dying from his cancer. I came to this realization when I read the part of the excerpt that says that Gus’s cancer is him, and he is fighting a war within himself with a predetermined winner. Next, I can infer that Gus has come to terms with his impending fate and ever looming death. I can infer this because in the passage Gus states that the cancer is him, defines him, and has the ultimate decision upon his fate. LAstly, I can infer that Gus is upset about his cancer, how it has taken over the person who he used to be. I inferred this because in the passage it says, “Some war, he said dismissively. What am I at war with? My cancer. And what is my cancer? My cancer is me.” Since Gus is talking to Hazel dismissively you can infer he is upset about the subject, and how his cancer has taken over his life. I thought the passage above really helped build up Gus’s character and clarified a lot about the story.
