Title of your book. What page are you on? Authors use language to help their readers to visualize and/or experience (sound, touch, taste, etc) their stories. Select a quote from your book that demonstrates this type of language use? Make sure you use quotation marks and include the page #. After the quote, please identify why it appealed to you. Hint: You may want to look for alliteration, similes, metaphors, personification, and/or idioms.
Include your first name, last initial, and class period.
Example Post:
Allegiant. Pg. 40. On page 29 of my book, I liked this sentence, "The question that is itching at the back of my mind is: Why didn't she tell me?" I like how the author, Veronica Roth, used personification to express how a questions was bothering Tris. The "itching" implies that this question was distracting to her and was weighing on her mind. She couldn't stop thinking about it, and really wanted an answer.

Divergent. I am on page 155 in my book. I liked the sentence, "Slowly the eyes of the other initiates, including Christina, migrate from him to me." I liked how Veronica Roth used the word migrate, I thought she would use the word traveled instead but the use of the word migrate was a very good idea because it is such a great synonym.
I AM NUMBER FOUR. I am on page 75. My author does do that." In the dark there is an eerie look" Page number 20. Well it uses the eerie which is a very districtive word.

I'm reading Artemis Fowl book 1, and I'm on page 101 right now. My quote for this would be "The troll was gnashing its tusks; greasy molars trying to grip her helmet." or "The beast's green tongue rasped across her visor, sliming the lower section." Page 57 for both of them. I like both because I fell as if I'm there in that persons position.

Twilight. Pg. 254. On page 252. I liked this sentence., "A thin, cottony later of clouds veiled the sky. They didn't look very lasting." I like this sentence because the author Stephanie Meyer, described the setting outside and I can really picture it in my mine. In this book she really describes the setting well. There are a lot of scenes in the book where it is outside so I really like it when she is distributive .

First light pg. 91. On page 90 I found the quote "geebee geebee" in the book this is the goofy term Peter and Jonas came up for the big blue tent that they use as their main living space. This quote really shows the mood and character of Jonas and Peter. "geebee geebee" stands for Giant Blue Golf Ball but for short they say "Geebee Geebee".
Goliath.pg. 206. "The steam in the room reminded me of how the leviathan is alive." pg. 155.This quote applied me because of how I thought it wasn't alive and it was alive which shows me that they have even more technology than what I thought. They had an animal that is kind of like a flying whale with a bunch of metal and gears inside of it as well as rooms showers and lots of other stuff.

Catching Fire, page 90. On page 52 I liked sentence "Orange? Like Effie' hair?...A bit more muted" I like how the author includes imagery because I can picture it in my head. I can tell what Peeta means by a sunset because a sunset is beautiful and has shades of orange in it. Katniss is surprised when he says orange beause she thinks his favorite color is an obnoxious orange like Effie's fake hair

The novel that I am reading is called 'The Immortal Von B.' by M. Scott Carter. The book briefly stated "ERICK SMACK Had the longest, most beautiful hair I had ever seen on a man. It was raven black and reached all the way down his back, like a river of dark velvet against the bright gold of his jacket." Pg. 107 p.1. This quote had some appeal to me, because of it's personification such as "He had the longest most beautiful hair ever." or " A river of dark velvet coming down the gold of his jacket."

I am reading the book The Lightning Thief by: Rick Riordan. I am currently on page 46 in my book. On page 13 of my book, I liked this part of the sentence, " ... chill of evil in the air..." I like how the author, Rick Riordan, used personification to express what the feeling was like in the room with a evil teacher. It gives the reader a clear but creative way of understanding what was taking place during this time and how it felt.
This is an awesome example! Thanks for sharing it!

It was a really cute way of saying that she is clumsy and i liked the visual that it gave me as I read. It also showed a little bit of playfulness.
I love how you expressed your thoughts! "Playfulness" was the perfect word :)
DeleteDaniel X. I am on page 223. On page 222 I liked the sentence "I wriggled into a duct like nerve, headfirst, and continued my merry way, spelunking through Seth's head." I really liked how James Patterson used great words and detail. It really shows how disgusting Seth's head is.

Pendragon Book Three: The Never War, I am on page 53. I like this simile, "..he's about as crooked as a rattlesnake in an accordion factory". I like how the author ties is the 1930's theme with the language the characters use. Even though its completely random it still sounds good in the sentence. This sentence was used to describe a mobster/business man as a killer.
Take this a step further! What is it telling me about the mobster/business man?

It is quoted o page 45 that "In the sudden thud, hiss, and glare of the igniting trees, the panic stricken crowd seems to have swayed hesitatingly for some moments." I chose this quote because it used descriptive words and caught my attention while reading.
The Enchantress. Page 154 of the book. A sentence I liked was, "These rules are a lot simpler. Anyone who doesn't look like you is your enemy." I liked this quote because it was said by Scathach (a 10,000 year old warrior) who was comparing how people fought at certain time periods and now. And the way it's delivered makes the concept a very easy one to understand.

I like this quote because it is showing how much that Miranda loves her brother to go find him even in a big blizzard. Also it shows how bad the weather is getting and that she is always hungry from a lack of food.

When I read this phrase, I could hear and sense all of the rats maneuvering throughout the walls in Jun-Jun's (Rat's) underground hole-house. It reminds me of when I hear water running through the pipes in my house. It probably sounds a lot like rats running through the spaces in the wall.

Cinder. I have finished the book. I found a quote on page 214. It said," One more evening of servitude. One more evening. The words propelled her on." I especially like this quote because the author creates a mood of grim determination in the passage. Cinder has only one more night before she can escape to freedom and the use of repetition shows how focused she is on getting through the day. I also like the way the author used personification as a way of showing the impact of the words she was saying.

The book that I am reading is Ungifted by Gordan Korman. I am on page 150 of the book, about 1/2 way done. Because I am at a very low point in the story that is not very important, I just chose an easy quote that I found on page 127 at the bottom. "The voice wasn't any louder than mine, but its piercing quality cut through the music like a fire siren." I liked this quote because at this point in the story, Donovan and his nerd friends are at a school party, which is very rare for them, and they are talking about how loud the DJ was. I also liked this quote for another reason. As I read it over and over, I feel like I could be in the situation that Donovan is in. That is why I chose that quote from the book.

It takes place when Stosh is looking for Clemente in the year of 1969 to warn Clemente to not get on the plane that would end his life two years later. He ends up in Woodstock. A huge concert held in New York. At this time in the book, Jimi Hendrix was playing. The sentence was, "he wasn't singing the words to the Star Spangled Banner. He was just playing it, with the fringe of his shirt all over as he whipped around his guitar and tortured the whammy bar." I have finished Divergent by Veronica Roth. On page 68-69, I like the simile, "It must be because you're so approachable"..."You know. Like a bed of nails". This quote shows her being sarcastic.

(awww) And it happened. while Meg and Belch got into a fight right next to them. Oh yeah I forgot to say but Belch found the show on T.v. and traveled there using toe t.v. (well he's a ghost.) My favorite part is when Lowrie says to Cicely( her real name) that he needs to do something that he should have 40 years ago. This is what the book said: "Well, Lowrie?" she said, echos of the teenager in her voice. "Why have you come here?" It occurred to Lowrie then that he was probably on television. "Lost love," he said simply, and kissed her on the lips.
I REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK! If I were you I would go check this book out now! It is SOOOO good!

ReplyDeleteI have finished my book and am now starting on Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I am on page 7 right now. “ District 12, the sun is well up”. This quote interest me because it tells me that she must wake up very early because she said this when she was done hunting. So far I like what I am reading because it is very suspenseful.

I am reading the book called Things Not Seen. I am on page 100 or chapter 13. In the book the main character Bobby is talking to his friend Alicia on the phone, he says in his head “ I can see the look on her face when she says that” I found this on page 97. This appealed to me because I can connect to that. When I talk to my friends I know if the are going to smile or laugh

The book I’m currently reading is The Last Book In The Universe and I’m on page 159. The quote I have chosen that, to me, demonstrates visual and experience details was “There isnt just one color of green, either; there's endless variations. When the leaves shiver in the wind, it changes. Each tree is different, each blade of grass is unique, and all of it looks alive.” on page 157. I took this quote right from the section where Spaz, Ryter, Little Face, and Lanaya enter Eden. Being from the dark, ruined world of Urb, Spaz, Ryter and Little Face are amazed at the sight of this beautiful world. They did not even know that things like grass and trees even existed outside of legends they had heard. I liked this quote because I felt like I was entering the perfect world with them and I can feel the emotion in every word.

I am reading the book Hana's Suitcase. I am on page 75. A quote that appealed to me was very descriptive about silence, "Fumiko opened the heavy front door and entered the cool foyer. It was eerily quiet." Another quote, "Fumiko's strong determination was written all over her face." These sentences stood out to me a lot because the description and weird words they used that is technically fake.

I am reading the book, The Adoration of Jenna Fox, and I am on page 74. There are a lot of good sentences in my book, but there is one that is really good. "She slides the Netbook into a file with four others, stands, and guides me through a doorway and down a hall that creaks under her heavy footsteps." I found this quote on page 67. I like this quote because the author, Mary E. Pearson, was very descriptive. She didn't just say, She lead me to my classroom, no. She was so descriptive with this sentence.

The book I'm reading is Kidnapped by: Gordon Korman. I'm page 88 chapter 13. The line that i like is:"They threw a paper air plane by her ear." I like this quote because I can see the paper airplane flying right by Meg's head.
So you liked this because you could visualize it?

The book I am reading is Catching Fire and I finished the book. The quote I picked from the book is "Yes, my holding out the berries had been the spark, but I had no way to control the fire." on pg.149. The quote appealed to me because it talked about Personification like it said Katniss is holding out berries and it had been spark so the author is saying that she has a spark that has been opened but she can't control it.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Page 42. On page 15 through the beginning of page 16 of my book is this weird drinking game that is in space at a certain place. “He didn’t realize that this was an old drinking game that Ford learned to play in the hyperspace ports that served the madranite mining belts in the star system of the Orion Belt.”( Not for kids). Here is how you play this game: 2 people sit at a table one person on one side of the table and one person on the other side. Then, they get one glass in front of each of them and they would have a Jinxed Spirit in between them. After that, you will have to find out what else the rules are and how to play when you read the book and find out. I pick this part in the book because it shows how crazy this book is and how weird the characters personalities are. The title is a title that says everything about how weird the book will be.

The Enchantress by Michael Scott. I am on chapter 58 and I love this book.My book uses plenty of descriptive words that really make me feel like I am there. One is, “She wrapped her arms around the creature, holding her tight, feeling her start to shake.”. Another good one is: “”You freed us,” she whispered, teeth chattering.”. I can really see The Morrigan shaking, and dying in Perenelle’s arms. Both quotes were from the second page of chapter 57.
Agreed, these quotes appeal to the senses!

The City of Ember. I am on page 120. On page 78 “Lina stretched her arms out. Was she facing the street or a building? Terror swept through her. I must stand still, she thought.” It appealed to me because it told me what she was feeling and what she was thinking.

The book I am reading is called Leviathan. I am done with this book and the quote that I chose was "The Struts leading to the airship were vibrating like piano strings, pulsing in time with the engines." I like this quote because it describes the noise of something on the airship so you can get a sense of what it sounds like.
I am reading Z. Rex by Steve Coles and I am almost done with the book, so I am on page 225 and the quote I found that helped me visualize the story was the quote “The breath exploded from Adam’s lungs and he doubled up, falling to the floor” on page 220. I picked this quote because I obviously know that breaths can’t explode, so I take this as personification. Almost done reading :)

I am reading the book Found. I am on page 179. The quote that helped me visualize what I was reading was on page 130. It says " what are they clones? He asked sarcastically. Did you ask to check there DNA. This had some descriptive words like sarcastic but it was humorous too. I am more than half way done with my book.

ReplyDeleteI am Reading Starters and am on page 215. On page 161 Callie said “ I looked up at the fluffy clouds in the blue sky.” This is a site. This quote appealed to me because not a lot of people notice these things any more. That is why this short little quote appealed to me.

The book that I am reading is The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau. One part in the book that helped me visualize the room they were staying in was "It was full of cobwebs. They picnicked the leaves and glass and tossed them out the windows. They put the lamps out in the hall-they were useless, of coarse, since there was no electricity..." page 61. This helped me visualize the room because it Shows that it was a old hotel they were staying in with broken glass on the floor and no electricity.

I have completed "The Selection" by Kiera Cass. An interesting quote I found that really gives sensory details was, "It was sweet and the dough was so flaky, every millimeter of my mouth was engaged, taking over my senses entirely." I found this quote on page 135. I used this quote because it was basically the first time the main character, America, had eaten food that rich and because of that she described it really well as I felt as i f I could touch and taste it.

The lost hero. Finished the book, on page 360 it said, "His head was spinning from summoning the lightning bolt. . ." I liked how Rick Riordan said this like it was slowly weakening Jason. The head spinning is when you feel all dizzy like your gonna fall.

My current scifi book is The War of the Worlds and I am on page 107. This book is about how Martins try to invade Earth. Surrey is very worried about this and he is trying to stay alive. “Be a man!... What good is religion if it collapses under calamity? Think of what earthquakes and floods, wars and volcanoes, have done before to men! Did you think that God had exempted [us]? He is not an insurance agent.” I think this quote is great from the book. He is scared with the Martians invading the world and hes trying to do everything he can to help.

The book I'm reading is Ever Lost by Neal Shusterman. I am on page 225 of the book. "... The darkness became a starless infinity that stretched into empty space. His spirit filled the emptiness from one end of infinity to the other.... A single spirit in a formless liquid eternity..." This is what was Lief was feeling and thinking while in a pickle barrel on page 141. He says he now knows how god felt. I used this because I could just imagine the freckle faced boy in the middle of space reaching enlightenment with stars in the background.

I am reading the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld and am on page 389. My quote was a metaphor describing how many times the Shay has messed up while hoverboarding.
“ “.....I’ve spilled more times than a glass of milk on a roller coaster.” “
This appeals to me because in these peoples world, books on paper confuses them, so how do they know about roller coasters. Only later in the book, Shay shows Tally an abandoned amusement park. When Shay said this to Tally she was super confused and the way the author writes and really executes every detail about how the characters think and it makes me feel like this book was actually sent to us from the past.
