Make sure you use quotation marks and include the page #. After the quote, please identify the sci fi characteristic and tell us why you chose this quote.Include first name, last initial, and class period.
Allegiant. I have just started to read this book, so I am on page 14. A quote from the book that shows I am reading science fiction is on page 10, "...they're starting the trials for all the prisoners. They're going to put you all under truth serum, and if it works, you'll be convicted as traitors." Then on page 11 Tris continues, "....atypical. In my experience, most Divergent can't resist the truth serum." I chose these two quotes because they show a futuristic medical treatment that the government can use in a court of law to make people tell the truth. Also, in this part of the book Tris talks about how she is labeled Divergent, which is a type of futuristic human.

The Maze Runner, I am on page 73. I don't have a quote so I have a word that is mentioned throughout the book, "Changing", the "Changing" (pg 73) is a futuristic illness that is caused by a robot that is used to guard the maze, the robot is called a griever.
What a great example! This is a great example of how one word can be very important to the plot of the book.

I am reading Divergent by Veronica Roth and I am on page eighty five. A quote from the book is "...the hub which was once called the Sears tower." This was in the first chapter of the book. The sci fi characteristic that I was noticing was the idea that the setting is in the future. I say this because it is set in Chicago but what was once the Sears tower is now the Willis tower an din the book it is called the hub.I chose this quote, because I think that a setting that is futuristic is a big part of the genre science fiction.
You are correct! I love that you pointed this example of a futuristic setting out!

ReplyDeleteThe book I am reading is "Mocking jay". I am on page 21. A quote from the book that shows Sci-Fiction is on page 5"...my arrow, aimed at the chink in the force field surrounding the arena...", says Katniss. This shows that is is sci-fi because we haven't invented force fields yet and that shows that it is in the future. I chose this quote because it has a lot of examples of how it is sci-fi.
This is a good example of advanced technology, but I don't think I would have comprehended this from just the quote. I like that you pointed this out after you introduced the quote.

I am reading The Selection as my science fiction book. I have finished this book and found a lot of info proving the book is science fiction. For example, "Who was the president during World War Four?" I found this quote on page 230. It really helps me identify the genre because World War four has not happened yet so I can infer that it takes place in the future.
Great example of a futuristic Earth! Love it!

I am reading the book " The Lightning Thief " by: Rick Riordan. I am currently on page 29. This book is more Fantasy than Science Fiction but it does include some Science Fiction elements such as an imaginative character. The imaginative character is Mrs. Dodds and in the text it states, " Her eyes began to glow like barbecue coals. Her fingers stretched , turning into talons. Her jacket melted into large, leathery wings. She wasn't human. She was a shriveled hag with bat wings and claws and a mouth full of yellow fangs..." This is found on page 12. This is an example because Science Fiction includes made up characters like Mrs. Dodds in this book and I chose this quote because it really gives a clear idea to the reader of why she is an imaginative character.
You are right! This character is imaginative, but it really does sound like this book is more fantasy. I think you are on the right track with that genre.

The book I am reading is Among The Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I am now on page 66. A quote that tells me this book is science fiction that was on page 6 is "There was a law against Luke. Not him personally-everyone like him, kids who were born after their parents had already had two babies." I chose this quote because its not hard to believe that you can only have to babies. This book is also a believable book because it is realistic and easy to believe.
Are you aware of any places in the world where they may have a limit on how many children you can have?

I am reading City of Lost Souls. I am on page 502. A quote from the the book that shows this book is fantasy is "When he summoned Raziel, Raziel Struck him down. Partly in revenge for what Valentine had done to his brother angel." This was said by Magnus Bane on page 206. then on page 207 Magnus also said, "He was an angel who taught mankind to make weapons, when before4 it had been knowledge only angels possessed. That caused him to fall, and now he is a demon." It explains how this book is fantasy because it talks about demons and angels, with Magnus Bane, a warlock, explaining why summoning either Raziel, the angel, or Azazel, the demon would most likely get you killed.
Yes, these creatures definitely sound like they are fantasy!

I am on page 50. Page 3, "The reporters, the camera crews, even Effie Trinket, my old escort, will have made their was to District 12 from the Capitol." The sci-fi characteristic in this quote is District 12. I chose this quote because District 12 is in Panem which doesn't exist and hasn't ever existed, which makes me know that it is in the future, and I also know this book is Sci-fi because they have better technology than we have now and because it is hard to believe our world could come to that but its not unbelievable
I like the reference to District 12, but then the rest of your post becomes a bit confusing. If I wasn't familiar with the story, I wouldn't know what you meant by Panem or better technology.

The title of my book is First Light By: Rebecca Stead. I am on page 48 and my quote is "I propose only that the council create a commie for research, so that we may educate ourselves about the possibility of surfacing to extend our land." on page 40. I chose this quote because it shows that these people are underground and still living with a council. This early on this quote has shown some of the most elements of science fiction yet.
So, this is the first indicator that this book might be sci fi? Are you just starting to find evidence?

The title of my book is The War of the Worlds written by H.G. Wells. I am on page 17. A quote from my book showing evidence of science fiction is "No one would have believed that in the last of the nineteenth century that we were being watched keenly and closely by intelligence greater than man" quoted on page 7. My book is science fiction because it involves martians and advanced technology. I choose this quote because it says that we are being watched by something other than man and that other is the martians.
Creepy! I don't like the idea of "others" being able to observe everything I am doing. What is the advanced technology?

Goliath. I am on page 92 in the book. The quote from my book is on page 9 the were talking about a two headed eagle. " The creature had two heads, and two necks, of course, coiled around each other like a pair of black feathered snakes." I think the science fiction part of it is that a two headed eagle is imaginary or scientifically made. I chose this quote because I thought it would show scientific advancements or imaginary creature.
Interesting! Let me know if it is a scientifically made creature. I am curios about this!
DeleteI am reading the book Daniel X by James Patterson. So far I am on page 139. The skin was decorated with pea-sized, pus-oozing bumps, like a diseased chickens." I chose this quote because is is describing an alien. Number 6 on the most wanted list, Seth Ergent.

It was tilted and wrong and three-quarter moon and it got larger, way larger, larger like a moon." Miranda continues saying " The moon is smack in the middle of the sky, way too big way to visible. You could see details on the crater eve, without binoculars." I choose this sci- fi characteristic because it is scientific theory. An asteroid could hit our moon and move it closer to Earth. Even though it probably won't happen, it could happen.

I am reading the book “House of Dark Shadows” by Robert Liparulo and I am currently on page 43. Right now, I am not sure if my book is Science-Fiction or not. I believe this book is more in the Horror genre than Sci-Fi. For example, in Liparulo’s book, it states “He wondered if the house creaked all the time…” and “...something about this place seem weird to you?” on pages #42 and #43. I chose this quote because it showed that the characters are more scared rather than basing everything on scientific theories.

I am reading the book "Trash". Right now, I am on page 92. This is a realistic fiction book, not a science fiction book. A quote from the book that explains this is on page 76. During readers workshop, when I read, "I passed an old man and two little kids in a cart. They were night sweepers, shoveling trash. I asked the man if I could have a cigarette, and he looked at me strangely." This was an example of realistic fiction. This passage let me know that where ever you are in the night, in Behala, there will always be someone to make you feel better. Before this was written in the book, Raphael was just beaten up by police. He was making his way home, and he came across a nice old man who let him hang around with him.
So, I think your quote definitely reflects a good example of why the book is realistic fiction, but I don't know if you supported the quote clearly.

I chose this quote because it has some scientific stuff like the needle and the name "hypodermic" in it and the word sounds scientific and they way he said it like "in him". I also wonder why that made him cheat in there because its just a needle and I wonder what was in the needle?
Hypodermic is definitely a scientific word. So you are not clear as to what was in the needle?

Currently I am reading Z. Rex, and I am on page 119. The quote I chose that was in the book was “Wings,” adam breathed in utter disbelief. “You’re a dinosaur... and you’ve got wings!”. This quote was on page 68, second paragraph. I chose this quote has to do with imaginative characters, because obviously a dinosaur can’t have wings, so this clearly goes with the topic of imaginative characters (Imagine if you saw a dinosaur with wings... wow...) Of course that’s not it, but that’s one of mine. Another one is that this book is about a dinosaur (you can guess with the “rex” in Z.Rex), so this goes with imaginative characters as well.

Raider's Ransom. I am on pg. 38 in this book. I chose the quote "Cos everyone knows that raiders chop up their captives a bit at a time and boil them for stew, or hang them in cages and use them for shooting practice." on pg. 38. I think this quote demonstrates science fiction content because it shows irregular characteristics in a character. The book hasn't really told what "raiders" are yet, but by this quote I am guessing they are some half-human half-beast type of creature. No where on this planet can you find people who kill other people to boil them up in stew. This book has created so other type of life form which is one of the elements in sci-fi books.
The fact that you mentioned that it takes place on a planet is probably the best indicator of sci fi. The character almost sounds like it could be from a fantasy book. Continue to search for evidence that this book is indeed sci fi!

A quote from my book that shows that this book is realistic/thriller fiction is "The plane landed at LAX a little late, well after lunch.". The airport that Jack, the main character is referring to is the Los Angles International Airport in LA. He also mentions real restaurants like Denny's. I am reading the science fiction book, Ender’s Game. I am currently on page 123-- I started this book a while ago. A quote that demonstrates that my book is science fiction was found on page 71. The author writes, “One of them contained four jumpsuits like the one he was wearing, and one white one. ANother compartment contained a small desk, just like the ones at school…” This quote shows that there was advanced technology in this time period, which is futuristic Earth. Also, when Ender is attending battle school, they have specially designed suits for training in the battle room. The battle room is a zero gravity room where different teams compete against each other. This also shows that it is science fiction because it takes place in space, and the whole reason Ender is brought to battle school is to figure out a way to stop an alien race from taking over Earth.

I am currently reading the book The Maze Runner by James Dashner. I just started the book, so I am on page 10. One quote from the book proving that this is a science fiction book is on page 10, "First Day. That is what today is for you, shrank. Night's comin', Runners'll be back soon." Also on page 10 it states, "Baggers'd drag you off, and yoou ain't no good to us then, are ya?" There are two examples of science fiction in these two quotes. In both of the quotes, various types of vocations are listed in their unique society, such as Baggers and Runners. They are two occupations that we inn our society don't have. Therefore, it is an example of science fiction because there is a different society built up in the book. Another example of science fiction is the language used in the book. New words that the characters use are being introduced very often. In the quotes, one word was "shank'. That is not a word used today. Since new language is developed in the book, it is science fiction.

The book I have finished reading is "The 5th Wave" by Rick Yancey.A quote from the book that indicates that this is a sci-fiction is: " The doctor holds up a small silver disk the nurse had used to take his temperature, the same device Parker had pressed against his and Megan's foreheads on the bus. "This isn't a thermometer, Sammy. Its tells us who you are. Or maybe I should say, what you are."" -pg.207 This shows it is a sci-fiction characteristic because the small silver disk, if you read on, is an advanced technology that shows who is an alien and who is not. If your forehead glows green, it indicates an alien presence inside your brain. If it is red, you are human. Particularly, as we discussed, advanced technology plays a big role in the genre of science fiction. So this disk, and others in the book, give the book the role of the book being a proper science-fiction book.

I also found this quote, "He was going off to be Unwound and they were going on vacation to make themselves feel better about it." This is a quote that got me realizing that this is science fiction because it is all about this process called unwinding and there is no such thing in real life about unwinding a person.

I am reading a book called Evil Genius and I am on page 73. "Cadel has a genius IQ in 4th grade.". The reasons I think this book is science fiction is that in the beginning of the book a 7 year old was a genius at all academics. It could happen but it pretty unlikely. One other reason was that there is advanced technology in the book. There is a wireless transmitter that is wired with DNA that the Cadel's Dad had made (His dad is in jail). The dimension of this book is on earth and present time. By the age 13 he is in 12th grade and is still not challenged. The reason why I chose the quote was because the story is about him and him being a genius. This book mentions lots of technology that is advanced.

All the Lovely Bad Ones. I am on page 55. A quote from the book to prove that it’s science fiction is on page 49, “. . . there was something in the dark watching me. . . It wasn't Corey or Travis . . . or any other living soul.” I had chosen this quote because usually people are alive unless they are dead, but it says that it’s not living so then it’s a ghost or something from outer space because no one knows for sure that liens are alive or not. They could be dead on their planet but alive on ours.

The book I am reading is T MINUS the race to the moon and this book is historical fiction. "The dramatic achievements in space which occurred in recent weeks should have made clear to us all,as did the sputnik in 1957,the impact of this adventure on the minds of men everywhere."

The book I am reading is called Leviathan. I am on page 311 the quote i choose is on page 273 "Did your scientist breed anything that can run as fast as a train" and "Machines give me fabricated species any day." I choose the first one because not just any animal can run as fast as a train. and the second one because it states a thing called fabricated species they breed the animals by getting life threads and putting them together

I have finished the book Glitch. A quote from the book that explains science fiction is “ The small aluminum circle under the skin of my chest, my heart and vitals monitor, vibrated slightly in response to my increased heart rate.” I found this quote on page 9. This show science fiction because people on Earth right now do not have heart and vitals monitors under the skin of their chest.

I am currently on page 42. One quote from the book is " lost in time" on page 37 and "SQuare" on page 34. "Lost in time demonstrates sci-fi because this book is in the future and the past and the main characters time travel a lot. "SQuare" demonstrates sci-fi because supposedly, in the future, a secret society called the SQ rules the entire world and everyone is forced to use their technology and follow the rules and laws of the SQ.

ReplyDeleteThe book I am reading is called The Last Book In The Universe; I am on page 67 so far so good. A quote that describes why this book is science fiction is “Ryter was this gummy….” “Gummies are what we call old people..” It talks about that in the future of 1,000 years, and that they made a new word for an old person. The quote is on page 8. This quote shows something that is new that we don’t have now, some kind of word, and I chose this quote because we could know that there was new words in the future, so meaning there are other new things in the future than now. That is why I used this quote.

The book I am reading is The People of Sparks and am on page 120. A quote that Torren states in the book is,"That was why the Three Plagues came. But before the Plagues, they had the Four Wars." I found this quote on page 75. This has nothing to do in relation to our modern wars and plagues, so the setting might be a different planet almost identical to Earth. Or it could possibly the future and the downfall of all governments. Also, the wars had very advanced technology to almost wipe out the human race.

The book I am reading is Skyship Academy by Nick James. I am currently on page 50. So far, this book is about a girl named Jesse Fisher and her friends who live in the future in New York. New york however, is a wasteland and very messy. They go to a camp or school called Skyship Academy and they they do secret training for protect a precious pearl that is very intact and important to them. A quote from the book is on page 30 and Nick James states ‘’I was never a fan of the Hernandez Treaty.’’ This is a science fiction element because there is no such thing as a Hernandez treaty that I heard of and the world being messy is scientific.

The book I am reading is called The Shadowing Hunted. I am on Page 40. The quote I saw on page 3 is "He sat hugging his rugby kitbag while he waited for his train, trying to ignore the ghost that stood beside him on the empty station Platform." Some Sci-Fi information in this quote is the technology which is the train. Also there is an imaginary character which is the ghost.

The stones of Muncaster Cathedral is the book I am reading. I am on page 23 my book has not given anything to be a sci-fi so it might be a fantasy so a quote for a fantasy is "The I told myself it was just a stone, and the work of mens hands and the wind and the frost, and not to be so bloody stupid." pg 13. My book could be a sci-fi but no clear examples yet

I am reading the book Divergent by Veronica Roth and I just got it today so I am on page 12. “ Today is the day of the aptitude test that will show me which of the five factions I belong in” on page 2. I choose this quote because I believe that it describes part of science fiction because there is no other place that you have to take a test that tells you what you are going to be doing the rest of your life and this would only happen in a different universe. For example in the United states you go to school and pick your job not being told what to do for the rest of your life

The book I’m reading is The Last Book In The Universe and I’m on page 45. A sci-fi quote in my book is “ He’s seeing whatever is happening inside his head, where the mind probe is playing. Putting him right there, like he’s inside a moving hologram only better. Better than real. Better than anything” on page 43. The sci-fi part of this quote is that it is describing mind probing, which is an example of future technology we don't currently had. I chose this quote because I thought it was really well worded and interesting to read. I also thought it described the sci-fi part of the book very well.

The book I am reading is 'The Immortal Von B.' by M. Scott Carter. The page I am currently on is pg. 23. One quote resembling science-fiction that I have from the book that I am reading "At least we didn't have to worry about a house, dad said WGC would provide one for us". pg. 20 p.2 The science fiction characteristics of this book are that the company, WGC is one of the most largest and most famous company in the world. So, that would tell me that this book has some believeable statements and claims. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is into suspenseful novels and a five- out-of- five star rating from high and most known book publishers.
What kind of company is it? Futuristic?

I am reading 10 Things I Hate About Me. I am on page 133. I am reading realistic fiction not science fiction. I think the quote on pg. 92 when Jamie, the main character comes with an idea of getting a job so that she can earn money and she doesn't have a strict curfew . “The girl who is serving us doesn't look a day older than me.” “I almost knock the drink out of my brother’s hands as I ask her how I can apply for a job.” I picked this quote because this could happen in real life but the story is fake. I also like this quote because it is descriptive.

Divergent. I am on page 50. A quote from the book that shows I am reading science fiction is on page 4, “The building that was once called the Sears Tower-we call it the Hub-emerges…” The Sci-Fi characteristic for this quote is that Chicago (Setting) is set sometime in the future. I chose this quote because it shows a futuristic element in this book. Also, when a setting is futuristic, it clearly is Science Fiction.

The book I'm reading is Catching Fire and I'm on page 50. The Quote I picked out was "Katniss Everdeen, the girl who was on fire, you have provided a spark, that left unattended, may grow into an inferno that destroys Panem." The page it was on was 23. The sci-fi characteristic is Panem and I chose this Quote because it talks about Panem which is not a place on earth yet, but in the later future. Also because it's where district 12 and other districts are.
I think you get it. Panem is on Earth, right?

I am reading The People of Sparks by Jeanne Duprau. on page 15 "The people from the dying city of ember came up into the new world only a few days before... they threw down a message, hoping someone would find it a lead the others out..." This quote shows that this is science fiction because they talk about how their city was dying and how that no one really knew there was life outside of ember. And using background knowledge from the first book you know that there was advanced technology in the first book that allowed the city to have light.

I am reading The Enchantress by Michael Scott. It is fantasy because of immortal humans, magic, gods, and mythology. In chapter 36 it says: “Isis and Osiris stepped back. “I have dreamt of this moment for millennia,” Isis whispered. “The moment when the twins of legend would stand before us in the armor of the lords of Danu Talis.””. I think that gods called “elders” living for millennia, and having twins of legend is fantasy.

ReplyDeleteI am reading “Starters” by “Lissa Price”. I am currently on page 141. On page 134 the book proves that it is science fiction by having Helena (one of the characters) say, “ Hey Callie this is Helena Winterhill, your renter.” A renter is someone who is young like Callie with little money who wants to rent out their body to someone. Also, a renter can be an old person who wants to be young again. Basically, they insert a chip into the back of the neck to people who are switching bodies. This shows that the book has future technology, a Science fiction characteristic.

I am reading First Light by Rebecca Stead. I read up to page 45 but it was really boring and confusing, but I tried to keep reading but that did not work so I decided to read it over again from the start. So now I’m only on page 11. One reason why I know that this book is science fiction is because of what it said on page 2 in the prologue, “And there was something else-a glowing blur behind them. The sun.” Mattais (the narrator/main character in the prologue) was talking about a photograph that he had found. Although the book did not directly say it was a photograph because Mattais had never seen one before. But it was very inferable. I picked this quote because in realistic fiction or any other genre the book would say it was a photograph because we use them today and have for a while. And Mattais had obviously never seen the sun before, or else he would not have been surprised, and we seen the sun practically every day.

The City Of Ember. I am on page 47. “How does it work? I don’t know I've been working here for twenty years and all I do is replace a part if it breaks and oil it if it gets stuck. We've always managed to keep it working but this year it seems to break down every couple of minutes. But I've been told we’ll run out of light bulbs before this thing breaks down.” Page 47. This quote demonstrates Si-Fi because of they don’t even know how things work they are just fixing what has already been created. They are also concerned if they are going to run out of light bulbs before they can figure out how to save the city’s power. I chose this because for both of these reasons it shows that these are things we don’t have to care about now but could in the future.

Title of your book. What page are you on? Select a quote from your book that demonstrates one of the characteristics of the science fiction genre? Make sure you use quotation marks and include the page #. After the quote, please identify the sci fi characteristic and tell us why you chose this quote.
The Boy Who Reversed Himself. I just started reading this book not too long ago, and I am on page 16 or chapter 4. One quote from my book that demonstrates one of the characteristics of sci-fi is, “Are you a twin?, No I am not twins, Then your face did reverse!”- page 13. The sci-fi characteristic is sci-fi because no one can really reverse himself, and I chose this quote because it was the best quote I could find.

Sadly her parents died and she was left on the streets with her brother Tyler. Callie desperately needed money. While she was walking on the street one day she heard about Prime Destinations. This place called Prime Destinations is where young people like Callie with no parents on the street can go and make money, but at a very high risk. My current scifi book is The War of the Worlds. I am currently on page twenty and so far this scifi book is about how aliens come to earth because their planet is doomed. They try to pick a safer home so they pick earth. Now the aliens have to destroy all the humans on the planet earth and make it their home. My book shows that it is scifi because it has martians in it and a lot of other things like some advanced technology. Overall, I want to keep reading this book.

The book I am reading is Virals by Kathy Reichs . So far I am on page 97 and a quote from my book that I thought showed Sci-Fi elements was "SNAP I moved swiftly, with my dog like instincts raging I rammed into Jason with full force knocking him through the wall" I liked this quote because it shows how Tory uses her dog smell, strength, speed, and sight.

The main characters to this book is jack there are also a couple other major characters in this book like uncle bill because he helps jack on his poetry. Jack is a nice kid. in the story it directly tells you that he misses his dog a lot. the author makes you infer that it is hard for him to write about his dog.

The book I am reading is called Ever Lost by Neal Shusterman. I am currently on page 37 and enjoying the book. On pages 17-18 "... Today, Lief learned how long Greansouls slept waking to their new afterlife.... It was 272 days. Nine months." Lief finds this out and I think this quote shows science fiction because it shows how long kids stay asleep when they first arrive in Ever Lost. Ever Lost is the place where kids go when they fail to get to the light at the end of the tunnel when they die. It shows us the future of when when a child dies because adults don't go there.

I am reading the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld and am on page 38. The quote I chose to demonstrate science fiction was a small conversation between Tally and her best friend Peris about their “extreme” plastic surgery, on page 18.
“ The scar that they had made together was gone.
“They took it away.”
“Of course they did, Squint. All my skin’s new.” “
The science fiction aspect of this quote shows the advanced technology in my book. These people stretch their bones, give them all new skin, add on muscle and lake off fat along with adding it in just a few hours. I chose this quote because I thought that it shows how they did things or how things really worked. To me the thought of getting all new skin disgusts me and really made me wonder what people are or will be capable in the future.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Page 42. On page 15 through the beginning of page 16 of my book is this weird drinking game that is in space at a certain place. “He didn’t realize that this was an old drinking game that Ford learned to play in the hyperspace ports that served the madranite mining belts in the star system of the Orion Belt.”( Not for kids). Here is how you play this game: 2 people sit at a table one person on one side of the table and one person on the other side. Then, they get one glass in front of each of them and they would have a Jinxed Spirit in between them. After that, you will have to find out what else the rules are and how to play when you read the book and find out. I pick this part in the book because it shows how crazy this book is and how weird the characters personalities are. The title is a title that says everything about how weird the book will be.
