I'm currently reading "Lions of Little Rock" by Kristin Levine. The main characters are Marlee a girl who is very shy and doesn't like talking but besides about math. A new girl named Elizabeth who made Marlee talk a full sentence.
Kristin Levine straight out told us that she talked a lot but not out loud to others. We're also told that she is nice to strangers and will answer their questions. Kristin also thought tells us secretly that she's a pretty smart person who could be considered a geek or nerd. Also that she looks up to her big sister, Judy, as a role model.
I am assuming that by the use of the word "she" in the second paragraph you are talking about Elizabeth, right?

Currently I am reading the book Indigo's Star by Hilary McKay. I am on page 23. The main characters in this book are Indigo, his three sisters Caddy, Saffron, and Rose, Caddy is the oldest then Saffron then Indigo and Rose is the youngest. The author directly tells you that Indigo has been sick for awhile and now he is going back to school because he is feeling a lot better, But the author has not revealed directly that before he got sick, the kids at school bullied him and he had a tough time.
Is the fact that he was bullied a part of the conflict/problem of the book?

I currently abandoned a book called crossed by Allie Condie. I stopped about three fourths of the way through a little while ago. Then I checked out another book, but within the first 30 pages I had no idea what was going on, because the word choice was a little bit too difficult for me to understand. I think I would like to got to the library and try to get the book divergent, because it sounds very interesting to me from what I have heard. Anyway, Cassia is the main character of this book, and she is a person who is very intelligent and smart. I made an inference about this, because Cassia was being watched or evaluated for what seemed like a great job in the society in the last book, and she has used some smarts that she has learned from the society and has applied it to where she lives now. The author directly told me that Cassia has a younger brother and a Mom and a dad. The author also directly told me that Cassia was matched with Xander one of her best friends. The author indirectly tells me that Cassia has feelings for Xander, because I made that inference in the first book and in this book, because Cassia is looking for Ky in the canyons so that they can be together.
I think the evidence you gave me to support your inference about Cassie is very logical. She does seem like someone the "society" values because of her intelligence. I agree with you!

The book I am currently reading is "Tuck Everlasting," by: Natalie Babbitt. The page I am currently on is page 65. The main character in the book is Winnie Foster. Winnie Foster is a 10 year old girl who lives in a house that owns the wood. The wood is a little forest in their backyard. What the author directly tells me about Winnie Foster is that she is at the age of 10 years and that Winnie grew up with orders her whole life. What the author indirectly tells me is that Winnie Foster is likes to keep things to herself. For example in the book it states, " There was a man on the road, just outside Treegap. But he didn't say nothing." " He knows me, though." "She had forgotten, too, tell them about the man in the yellow suit." This hows that Winnie Foster likes to keep some things to herself.
Eve, I love how you used text to support your claim that Winnie is someone who likes to keep to herself. Well done! On another note, I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. This book has also been made into a movie that you may want to see at some point.

The book I recently finished was City of Glass by Cassandra Clare. The main characters, Jace, Clary, Alec, Simon, and Isabelle are all from a dark, scary, yet amazing world. Some being new to it, Simon and Clary, others living in it their entire lives, Alec, Isabelle, and Jace. Simon is the only vampire that can walk in sunlight, and Jace, Clary, Alec, and Isabelle are Shadowhunters, A.K.A Nephilim. Jace and Isabelle are arrogant, they think they are some of the best Shadowhunters in their age, and even though it's true, too much arrogance is not good, they learn. Alec, Clary, and Simon are all insecure in some way. Alec doesn't want anyone to know of his feeling for Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Brooklyn. Simon is still getting used to being a vampire. And Clary just wants to fit into this new world she accidentally stumbled across.

I'm reading the book Rules by Cynthia Lord. I am on page 155. The main characters in this book are Catherine, David, Jason, Kristi, and Mom. The author tells me directly that Catherine makes rules for David to help him learn from his mistakes. The author reveals indirectly that she is a tomboy, and she does not like to tell people about David. The author directly tells me that David has autism, but the author reveals indirectly that it is hard for him to learn just from school. The author tells me directly that Jason is in a wheelchair, but reveals indirectly that he has been in the wheelchair forever. The author directly tells me that Kristi's parents are separated, but indirectly tells me that Kristi is girly. Lastly, the author tells me directly that mom works a lot. but indirectly tells me that she relies on Catherine for a lot of things.
I have just finished my book Schooled by Gordon Korman and it was pretty good. The main character is Cap, a clueless hippy from a place called Garlands that doesn't know much about the real world or anything outside of Garlands. The main characters are Naomi, Zack, Hugh, Mrs. Donnelly, but the most important character is probably Cap. The author does show how clueless Cap is throughout the story in fact in the first sentence of the book you can just tell he is. Something I don’t think was mentioned in the story was how much Cap really changed everyone's hearts and turned everything around, nobody expected what he would do but he changed and touched a lot of people in this book.

The book that I just finished was "I broke Stalin's Nose" by Eugene Yelchin. The main characters are Sasha, Sasha's dad, and, Sasha's aunt and uncle. The author tells me directly that his mother died. It also told us that his dad was a secret state agent meaning he tries to catch people that smuggle into Moscow. The author tells us indirectly that he and his father are not that rich so they spend their money wisely are sometimes rely on the peoples garden on the roof of their apartment building.
I am currently reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I am on page 276. The main character in this book is named Diana Bishop. In the first chapter the author reveals that she is very smart by telling the reader that she has her doctorate degree, spends many hours reading/researching, and is a professor at Oxford University. The author states on page 8, "I'd (Diana) skipped by final years of high school and started college at sixteen." I can infer from this sentence that she must be very intelligent because schools don't allow students to just skip grades without good reason. The author also describes Diana as being athletic. She doesn't come out and directly say this, but she implies it by writing in several of the chapters about Diana's love for rowing. Most importantly the author explains Diana's family background. She comes from a long line of powerful witches, and though she lives in England presently, she is from the United States. In fact, her family can trace their heritage back to the Salem witch trials. I am so loving this book! It is so interesting!

My book is called When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. I am on page 140 and the main character is Miranda. Miranda is a young girl who is sort of poor living in a big city. She lives alone with her mother and doesn't know about her father. Her mom gets on a big TV show to win big money that could really help her family out. Miranda seem like the kinda of average girl who just needs to fit in with everything going on. The author directly tells that she is kind of confused and a little bit nervous. The author indirectly tells that she has a big hart and doesn't want to hurt anyone.

Lucy is Sofia's sister, They get along very well, Berta is Sofia's cousin and first comadre or lifelong friend. The author straight out told you that Sofia and her family were Spanish. Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit from the Shire. He is used as a burglar for a dwarven company. Thorin is air to the Dwarven throne on the Lonely Mountain. He leads his company to the Lonely Mountain to take back their home and all their treasure. The author reaveak many things about the hobbits. He tells the reader their history and their families. The author told me that Bilbo belongs to the richest families in the Shire and he possesses adventure potential. Some things the author doesnt tell me about Bilbo is that he is very smart and resourceful. He was able to intelligently kill a giant spider without the companies help. Gandalf story is very unknown. The author makes him very mysterious to the reader. Thorin comes down from a line of Dwarven Kings and is true air to the Dwarven throne. The author indirectly says that Thorin is very hardy and has gone through a lot.

Sarah is a risk taker it doesn't say that about her but she always is not listening to Ryan when he tells her it is dangerous and she will do anything to get good evidence. Ryan is a rule follower he will not sneak out and if his parents tell him to do something he will do it. The book that I am reading is called nerds by Micheal Buckley. So far I think that the book is okay it is really boring in the beginning because they introduce all the characters. The NERDS are Duncan 'Glues-tick' Dewy, Ruby 'Puffer fish' Peet, Haethcliff "Chomppers" Hodges, Julio "Flinch" Escala, Matilda "Wheezer" Choi, and the leader and "the new recruit" Jackson "Braceface" Jones. I don't know who my favorite character is but probably will know in my next post

The book I am currently reading is Brian's return, by Gary Paulsen. I am on page 101. So far, the book is about Brian, the boy who survived over 90 days in the wilderness from a crash landing plane. Right now, he is in the wilderness, after getting dropped off by a pilot. Brian wasn't feeling right at home, so he decided to take his life to the woods. Brian has been enjoying his time so far, but Mother Nature has been beating him up. Wild animals have been taking his stuff, and messing up his camp each day. But with Brian's love for the wild, nothing will stop him. He has brought stories made by shakespeare to cheer him up, and a lot of vital supplies to make his life in the woods so much easier. With everything going so well, something bad is bound to happen... In this book, the author states indirectly throughout the beginning of the story how much Brian loves to be one with the wilderness. In the story, Brian kept on saying how much he didn't like the modern day activities. Playing video games, hanging out with friends, and anything else the average kid would be doing. That is when I had the idea that Brian missed the wilderness. There was nothing more Brian loved than to be in the wild, by himself, with nothing but goals to reach. Nobody there to boss him around. He could just do whatever he wanted. In the book, Brian's Return, there is no place like the wild.
Woo! Hoo! I love your strong example of indirect characterization :)

I just finished Crossed by Ally Condie. It is about two teenagers who fall in love, Ky and Cassia. Cassia is already matched with another boy, Xander, who is her best friend. The book tells us that Ky is an aberration which means that he or someone in his family has done something bad and do not have a match, they are always single. They fall in love anyway. The society do not like this though so they send Ky to be a soldier in the outer provinces, outside of the society, and Cassia to work in the farm lands. They can't stand to be a apart though, so they go on an adventure to find each other. Through their journey they learn about the Rising. The rising is a group of people that hate the society and are trying to rebel against it. I know that Cassia wants to find the rising and be apart of it and Ky does not. The author indirectly reveals that Ky does not want to be apart of the rising because he believes that Cassia and him will be safer inside of the society. He is only looking for it because he wants to be with Cassia and she wants to join the rising.
Woo! Hoo! Two great examples of both indirect and direct characterization. I love the support/evidence you gave as well.

The book I am currently reading is “Warriors, Dark River” and the author of this book is Erin Hunter. I am on page 243 and it is very exciting. Currently in this book the main characters are Jaypaw, Lionpaw, Hollypaw, and Leafpool. Jaypaw is a blind medicine cat. Lionpaw is strong and wants to become the best warrior of the clan. Hollypaw just wants to help Riverclan with their problems instead of having a war. Leafpool is the actual medicine cat unlike Jaypaw who is her apprentice. Those are the characteristics of the main characters the author tells me directly. What author tells me indirectly is that Jaypaw has a special power of going into other cats dreams. Hollypaw knows something she can't tell her clan about Riverclan. Lionpaw is being talked to by an evil cat named Tigerstar who he thinks is trying to help him.. Leafpool knows something about the three apprentices Jaypaw, Hollypaw, and Lionpaw that she can't tell anyone not even them.
Two good examples of indirect and direct characterization. Nice job!!!

I am currently reading Hunt for the Seventh by Christine Morton-Shaw. I am now on page 87, and the Main Characters are James (Main character), Sal (James’ sister, main character), Henry (Einstein, also main character), and more. The author clearly tells us that James is Sal’s brother, and Henry/Einstein is autistic, how “...Einstein never looked once at me…”, but very smart (hence the nickname Einstein). The author also reveals indirectly that Sal is a tattletale whenever she doesn’t really get her way, also that Sal is sensitive.

World War Z
The book I am reading right now is World War Z. I'm only about 30 pages into it but so far it is really good. Some books start off boring and bleak but after about 5 pages, this book stared it's action. WWZ is kind of a "PG-13" kind of book because is has some violence, so if your not into zombies don't read this book. The book started out somewhere in Asia where a doctor gets a call that some people are pretty sick and a boy has gone crazy. So he goes to this call and finds all the people in a caged off area. He asked why they were caged off and the don't say anything, but they point to small shack with something going crazy and jumping around inside of it. He finds a pale, cut up, jumping around kid inside of. The doctor gets two of the strongest people he sees around to open the door and hold the boy down with him. When the boy is down and secure, the doctor examines him and he find that he is really pale, and all of his cuts aren't bleeding, so he tries to take a blood sample and brown puss comes out. Then, I would tell you the rest but it's really icky. So if you like zombies and "PG-13" books, then WWZ is the book for you.
You gave a lot of detail about the plot and setting of the book. I would like to have learned more specifics about the character.

Currently the book I'm reading right now is called Peak, by Roland Smith, aka the author that made a good book that I want to read called Elephant Run. This book is about a boy named Peak Marcello (the book even says that “Peak” is a weird name for a boy). Right now I haven't gotten into the book so far yet, so I am on page 27. Well, the main character is Peak, and he is just a 14 year-old boy who climbs a mountain, but that’s the problem. He climbs 29,000 feet and gets arrested. Read the book to find more about what will happen later in the book. When you open the first page, the author will directly tell you about Peak, and about his name and what he does, like what I already said, he climbs a 29,000 feet mountain, and becomes the first youngest one to climb a mountain that high.
Thank you for following directions! I like that you gave me evidence from page 27 :)

She lives in a world where infectious diseases cling on to you and slowly suck your life force out. Every other day, she is a hunter. Her blood turns toxic and she has a unnatural lure to kill supernatural creatures. Every other day, she is indestructible and there is no one on the planet like her. Once she has befriended Skylar, the oddball of the school, she recognizes a fatal mark on one of the most popular girls in school and know that she has only twenty-four hours to save the girl. There is just one problem, it is the wrong twenty-four hours. After she lures the monster out of the girls body and into hers, she sets out on a quest to save the voice in her head, the one person she knows for a fact is exactly like her. Her friends try to help her along the way but they have only regular abilities. I love this book so far and would recommend it to people who enjoy science fiction and survival stories.

ReplyDeleteCurrently I am reading Shoeless Joe & Me by Dan Gutman. A Sports Fiction book about a boy who can travel to the time and generation of a player. All he needs is the player's baseball card. In this book young 13 year old boy Joe Stoshack finds a rare Joe Jackson Baseball card. Everyone knows that Joe Jackson may or may not have blown the 1919 world series for the Chicago White Sox on purpose to help win a bet on the other team winning. When Joe finds the care he realizes he can stop the game being blown if he travels back to 1919 to the Shoeless Joe era. In previous books Joe has traveled back to the Jackie Robinson, Micky Mantle, Honus Wagner, and Babe Ruth eras. This book is definitely a book to read even if u do not like sports or adventure.

I am currently reading the book called the curse of the campfire weenies. It is kind of a good book. It is a book that has different stories. The author of this book is David Lubar. This book is a good book in my opinion because you don’t have to read them in order. I like this book because it also has stories of many genres. Genres from science fiction to realistic fiction. This book is for you no matter what genre you are into.
The book I read was Firegirl the author is Tony Abbott and I just finished the book yesterday. The main characters are Tom, Jessica, Mrs.Tracy, and Jeff. The author talks about how the new girl Jessica changes the school by her appearance. For example many kids don't like Jessica because of how she looks and really just Tom talks to her and they make a good friendship. Something the author does not say directly is how Jessica AKA fire girl is not there for a long time just for a couple weeks and how they call Jessica firegirl because she is sort of burned from her skin.

I just finished reading the book, Both Sides of Time, by Caroline B. Cooney. It is about a teenage girl named Annie Lockwood who ends up traveling through time into a more romantic time period. Now, Annie didn't know it at first, but this trip would change her life forever. She has trespassed into the lives of people from the past, and no matter what direction she goes, she will always be stuck in a never-ending love triangle. If you like to read romantic love stories, this book is for you. The author explained Annie as a typical teenage girl living a romance in the wrong century. Throughout the story, one way she described Annie in an indirect characterization is by describing her emotions. Inside, the author revealed she was a curious, innocent girl trying to find her way. A direct way the author revealed the main character was by describing her with her physical traits. Cooney said Annie had dark brown hair, had a beautiful white dress on, and was quite the charmer. The author states,”her hair was dark and romantic against the white of her dress.” I also used the cover to infer what Annie looked like. In my opinion, I give this book a 1 ½ out of 3. I rated it this way because in the beginning, it was kind of confusing how she traveled into another time, but once I started getting more into the book, I understood it more. Overall, it was a, interesting book to read.

I have recently been reading the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. The book follows a boy named August, who has a special gene that made his face really really really... deformed. The book is touching and and should get a good reader’s workshop for itself. In the book August is home schooled. But in 5th grade, he starts public school. Because he has a out of the ordinary face, he is very prejudiced. First of all he’s the new kid. But having his face makes it a lot harder to get friends. People even start playing a secret game called the plague, which is just like the cheese touch from Diary of a Wimpy Kid but August is the cheese (they even refer to the cheese touch from the book). One thing I really like about this book is the realism. If you had a deformed face you would most likely be treated like how August is in this book. On the bright side he does make some friends. But that’s all I’m telling you. Read the book to find out what happens next!
I've read this book before, and I want to read it again because I really like this book. This is a great realistic-fiction book, and even I would recommend it to everyone else. Great job doing the blog response as well! :)

The book that I am reading is "Curveball, The Year I Lost My Grip" by Jordan Sonnenblick. The book is about a boy named Peter Friedman, who is an all-star pitcher in his league. During one of his baseball games, his elbow starts to click when he pitches. He does not think that it is anything so he keeps on pitching. The catcher, AJ, signals him to keep throwing curveballs. Peter nods off the signs because he knows he is not able to pitch consistent curveballs. If he makes three batters strike out, the team wins the game. He throws and throws until he can not throw anymore. On the last pitch of his career, his arm locks up and he falls to the ground. He gets rushed to the hospital, and finds out that he will never be able to pitch a ball again. At the lowest point in his life, he decides to start his photography career with his Grandpa. It has been a dream for him to be able to capture stunning images right along his Grandpa. When his Grandpa decides to give Peter his thousands of dollars worth of equipment, it sparks a red flag with Peter. When he signs up for an advanced photography elective in High School, he falls in love with a girl in his class, who all the sudden starts flirting with him and they get put together on a project they have to do. I am only on page 88, but I like this book a lot. What the author tells me indirectly is that Peter is not only a great athlete, but an athlete that HAD a chance to make it to the big leagues before his elbow became unusable. Him and his friend AJ, are both all-star pitchers and they switch off being Catcher and Pitcher during the Baseball games.

The book I am reading is Hatchet, the authors name is Gary Paulsen. The main characters name is Brian Robeson and is very unhappy with his parent’s divorce. I am at page 13 and so far it isn't all that interesting, except for the part when the pilot of the two passenger plane has a heart attack, Brian tries to keep the plane from crashing but the pilot accidentally jerks the plane to the left and it starts spinning out of control.

I am currently reading The Girl Who Was Supposed To Die. I am on page 17. The characters so far is the kidnapper and the girl. In the four chapters that I have read is about a girl who ends up in some room with two kidnappers. The kidnapper who is telling the other kidnapper what to do. He says “...Finish her off..” He takes the girl to a cliff and the kidnapper is about to shoot her. Right before that happens she takes a grip of a huge rock and hits him with it. She takes off the blindfold and starts to choke him on the ground. Then, she steals his gun from his pocket and drives away with his car. I really like this book and it is really interesting. I like this book because thriller is one of my favorite genres.

The book I’m reading is Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The page I'm on is 240, so I’m almost done with the book. There are three main characters in my book Chip, Jonah and Katherine. Chip and Jonah were both adopted, and they are best friends. Katherine is Jonah’s sister. She is helping Jonah and Chip find out some information about their adoption. There is something mysterious going on about their adoption especially Jonah’s. There is some information that they could not know about, and there is apparently some bad people going after them. Along the book they are trying to find out what is going on. In the book the author says directly that Chip isn't such a big fan of what Chip and Jonah are trying to do to find the important information. For example, Jonah and Katherine wanted to see who else was adopted from the neighborhood and they finally found one. Chip was trying to find a way to pass by the house on purpose, and he said ‘’ I really don’t like this idea.’’ In the story it mention indirectly that Mr. Readon ( The guy that doesn't want to tell them the information) was trying to find out the facts that Jonah’s family already knew. Another example is that Mr. Reardon said “ I’m sorry I can't tell you anything, but I understand why you are angry.’’ I could infer that he just met with the family to see what they knew, not information that Mr. Reardon will tell them. So far I love the book!

I am on page 80 in the book Bratfest at Tiffany's. The main characters in the book (so far) are Massie, Claire, Alicia, Dylan, Kristen (The Pretty Committee). Massie is the leader of the Pretty Committee, and she makes all the decisions. They are all very popular, but not so nice (except for Claire). The author indirectly says that Massie is not a loser when he Massie says " Eighteen is our table! I don't want some LBR (Loser Beyond Repair) seventh-grader or a pack of Briarwood boys to claim it." The author also indirectly makes us infer that Massie is very loyal to her friends from the sentence, " Besides I have something (gift) for you". This shows that she cares about her friends and their relationship. I was not able to locate any direct characterization.

ReplyDeleteI am currently reading The Apothecary by Maile Meloy. I am on page 98. The main characters are Benjamin and Janie. Janie has just moved from California to London, and she feels really out of place(direct) until she meets Benjamin, a strong, compassionate(indirect) boy who is a little stubborn at times(indirect), but really comes through at the key moments. Janie is a shy girl(direct) who is teased by the more popular girls, like wealthy, beautiful(direct) Sarah Pennington. She is really grateful for the fact that she has a good friend like Benjamin, who she has a crush on, to back her up and be there for her. But one day, Benjamin’s father, an apothecary, someone who deals with medicines, gets kidnapped. The apothecary leaves an ancient, mysterious book, entitled the Pharmacopoeia, in the hands of a determined Benjamin. The Pharmacopoeia is full of magical spells and potions. With Janie to tag along, the duo embark on a gutsy journey to search for the secretive apothecary.

The book that I just finished is called shug, and the author of the book is Jenny Han. The main characters in this book is Annmarie, her parents, her crush mark and friend elena. In this book the author tells you directly that shug is trying to get a mark to notice her as more than a friend which is hard considering they have been best friends for as long as she can remember. And as this is happening her parents are having a hard time not fighting all the time. Her dad works in Atlanta and is away more than home. Shug has gotten over it but her mom hasn't. She gets very upset when he isn't home and can be mean too. She tells you indirectly that with all of these things happening to chug it just keeps getting worse in the sense that every time she gets upset she doesn't want to show it because Annmarie is afraid what people would think if she cried. she also says indirectly that She wants to be the girl in the popular crowd with her friend elena but doesn't want to be friends with the people in it.

I am reading the first book in the 39 Clues series, called The Maze of Bones, by Rick Riordan. It extremely interesting and I like the book a lot. The main characters are Dan and Amy Cahill, who are brother and sister. I'm near the beginning, but it has defiantly got me hooked. Dan and Amy are siblings that don't get along very well. There family is in a long time running of important roots. They don't get very much freedom because of their aunt that watches over them. The tension between the two siblings help contribute to the story. You can tell over time that the siblings grow together as they have to overcome challenges and obstacles together, in order to beat the other families.
I like how your describe the characters, but you forgot to mention direct or indirect characterization.

ReplyDeleteI am reading "Built to last" by: David Macaulay. I am on Page 56, there is no main character, it switches between King Edward I and this captain who really has no name, the English just fairly conquered this welsh territory and places a town with a castle on a hill top. The processes is taking much less time than expected, and they know the welsh are coming so the sooner the better. I would say that by inferring they both sound very hardworking, anxious, people.
So, I am inferring that the author did not directly give you any information about the characters....hmmmm?

The book that I am reading is Bamboo People by Mitali Perkins. I am on page 243. The main character is 14 year old boy named Chiko. Chiko is not the only main character. When Chiko gets drafted into the army he meets a lonely street boy named Ty. Ty is a strong boy because he has been living on the streets for all his life. Chiko is the exact opposite. Chiko is not very strong but he is the only boy in Burmese that knows how to read and write because his dad was a teacher. The author doesn't tell you that on the inside Chiko is really strong and can learn to fight for himself. The author does a good job hiding this because he hides it until the biggest moment in the book. I really recommend this book.

I am currently reading First Light by Rebecca Stead. I am on page 219 out of 328. The main character is Peter, he lives in New York in a apartment. His parents are both some time of scientist. His best friend is Miles. Something that the author tells me directly is that he is not very good in school, he is always behind on projects, also that he is going with his mom and dad on a trip for his dads work to study a glacier. Something that the author indirectly tells me is what peter and his mom are experiencing when they get headaches and why peter makes a note every time he has a headache. I think this is a pretty good book, not amazing, but good.
I had a difficult time staying engaged in this book as well. It is on my list to give a second try on a later date :)

The book I am reading is Crater by Homer Hickam I am on page 59 and so far the main characters are Petro and Crater. Crater always sees the good side of ecerything and Petro is basically is the opposite because he always thinks there will be no Helium-3 (the stuff they are working for) in the place that they are searching. Another one of the characters is the kings daughter and I think she will become a main character because Crater got nervous around her. The author doesn't give away who the King is looking for but he does give away a hint about who it will be.He does give away that Petro is the prince of whales and wants to live on earth instead of the moon.
This sounds like a good book. Are the traits you mentioned about the characters directly stated or were they inferred?

The book I am reading is The Lost Hero by, Rick Riordan. The main characters are Jason, Leo, and Piper. JASON: Jason is 18 and has no memory. He is a very powerful demigod, son of Zeus. Jason also has blond hair and kind of has a crush on Piper. Jason's problem is he has no memory.
PIPER: Piper the daughter of a millionaire she gets in trouble a lot at school. She has moved to a lot of different schools. Piper also can make people give her what she wants, for example, she talked a guy into giving her a BMW. Turns out Piper is the daughter of Aphrodite and has the power to dream speak. Piper also is keeping secrets to her friends
LEO: Leo is a trouble maker as well. Always telling jokes and messing around. Leo has a babysitter who is evil. Her name is Tia Callida. She tries to burn him but he is somehow fire-resistant. Leo is the son of Hephaestus and has a way with tools. he also has a way with fire. Leo has a power, which is his secret. he has brown hair.
Leo and Piper and Jason all end up going to Wilderness school for bad kids. And there they find their destiny. These main characters all have something wrong and are all desperate to fix it.
I love how you supported the claims you made about each character with evidence/examples from the text. You did a nice job of paraphrasing.

The author tells me directly that Judy is Marlees sister and Marlee tells everything to her. They start to grow farther and farther apart later in the story. The main character is Victor, The author tell us that Victor is impulsive, mischievous, desperate, and that he loves his brother, He would do anything for him. But, what the author tells us indirectly is that Victor is dark. He will use the dark arts for desperate measure: not caring if it affects anyone close to him. I might say that he will turn out evil.

The book I have most recently finished is called An Abundance of Katherines, by John Green. I really enjoyed this book. In this book the main characters are Hollis, Lindsey, TOC (the other Colin), Colin, and Hasan. In this book the one definite main character is Colin Singleton. In the book the author tells us about how Colin is a child prodigy, that doesn't really think all that highly of himself. He’s far smarter than his one and only friend Hasan, and his ultimate downfall is his inability to tell a story. I just finished a book called Mocking Jay it is by Suzanne Collins. The main characters are Katniss Everdeen and Peta Mellark. The author tells us directly about Peta. The author says that he is murderous because of what the cappital did to him while he was in their custody. What they indirectly say about Peta is that his love for Katniss is eternal even if the capital "hijacked" him the author proves this when Peta stops trying to kill Katniss whenever he sees her. The author doesn't say anything directly about Katniss so I'm going to skip that. The author indirectly "says" that Katniss is a girl who is stuck on the events that happen in the past. The author shows this when she still wakes up every night because of nightmares about events that happened in the past.

Right now I just abandoned the book Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin. I read up to page 108. It was about this young boy named Sasha who lives in Germany and his father is a great hero and Communist of the war. He is the one who directs spies and captures enemies. Sasha is the main character in this book because it is about him and how he wants to be a Pioneer (a Junior Communist) to follow in his father’s footsteps. One thing that the author makes you infer about Sasha is that he is very stern and focused. You can infer this because he is the leader of the class, get all A’s in school, and is very proper and has very good manners. One thing that the author gives us directly is that Sasha is very loud. He doesn’t back down from any opportunity to talk. Right when Sasha’s father gets home he is screaming away. Talking to him non stop.
The reason why I abandoned this book is because it was too easy of a read and the topic/subject didn’t interest me. I was almost done with the book but nothing exciting had happened but yet the ending was very predictable.

JUST finished the book
America seems so determined of her future. She will marry Aspen, wants to have about 2 kids, and DEFINITELY won't enter the selection, it's ridiculous. But America is no where near where she thought she would be. She was convinced by her love, Aspen, to sign up for The Selection. The Selection is where girls 16-20 sign up to visit the palace and the prince, Maxon, would pick his wife. Aspen didn't want to feel like he was dragging her back. She did sign up for the selection, but didn't want to go. She made a feast for Aspen before she left, but Aspen was mad. He wanted to provide for her, as the man, and not the other way around. He left America heart broken and feeling horrible. When she made the selection, she was mad and thought everything would go even more downhill from there but, surprisingly, The prince Maxon was not as stiff and was nicer than on Tv. America begun to get mixed feelings between Maxon and Aspen, when she ran into a surprise in the palace. Aspen.

The book I am reading is the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and it is the best book ever! The characters are Katniss, Peeta, Prim, Gail, and Prim. The indirect things about Katniss is that she is very motherly and takes that role at her house. The direct things are that she hates the Hunger Games and doesn’t want to have anything to do with them, but she has to be in them, or let her little sister, who is the biggest thing in the world to her, or she goes in for herself. I think this also shows that Katniss has a lot of courage to go out and do this for her sister. I am on page 244 and this IS my favorite book, in the world! ReplyDeleteRight now, I am reading Crossed by Ally Condie. The main characters in this book are Cassia, a seventeen year old girl, and Ky, a seventeen year old boy.
The author tells us directly that Cassia and Ky are going to escape from their camps to find each other and to be together. The book says that Cassia is going to the outer providence, and they do not tell you where Ky is going. Also, the author tells you that Ky is escaping from his camp with his partner, Vic, and a kid that looks like Cassia’s brother. His name is Eli. They were going to escape when the enemy comes to their camp and attacks.
What the author does not tell you in this book is that Cassia and Ky are in love. You can tell because they are sneaking around the officials, hiding each others items, protecting them like it was their own child, and that they are trying to escape from their camps just so they can be together.

The authors of this book are trying to get more and more people to try and beat records or create new ones. This book is for people who want to know who is the tallest, fastest, and even the fattest. Strong and muscular as he is, the young man is chosen to be a leader in the in the battle of Skandia, taking the side of the Skandians against the Temujai. The author shows many characteristics of Will. For example, he shows how the training he has had with Halt is showing an effect on the actions and choices he is making currently. The author also shows he had lots of determination, stating that he had lots of courage in battle, doing whatever he could to defend his own nation, back at home in Araluen. He commands his small group of troops along with Evanlyn (Princess Cassandra) and Horace, not giving in an inch. One example the author explains indirectly is when Will makes his own choices. During a meeting before the war occurred, Will and his master, Halt, were assigned to give tactics on defending Skandia, losing as least people as possible. While in the meeting, Will gives in a huge plan that will give them the advantage. This shows how intelligent in planning things out. As a result, their attack strategy startles the enemy, forcing them to retreat.

The main characters are The twins(Josh and Sophie Newman) and Nicholas Flamel.
Nicholas Flamel is the protector of the twins. The author directly tells me that Nicholas: is an experienced and immortal alchemist who is trying to stop the dark elders from taking over the world. The twins: Josh: Josh is jealous of his sister when she get her powers awakened. Soon he get his powers awakened and Flamel gives him Clarent the brother sword of Excalibur. Sophie: Sophie has her powers awakened and she uses them to help fight the people or rather the things chasing them. Sophie can use fire and air powers already and will learn more later. Indirectly the author say that Sophie and Josh are very dangerous in the wrong hands. He also says that more people will follow the dark elders because they are afraid of them or want immortality.

ReplyDeleteI am currently reading the book Nightrise, by Anthony Horowitz. I am on page 25. So far of what I have been reading is that it looks like that the main characters are these 2 kids who are twins. They are guys who are named Scott and Jamie. They are twins who have some kind of power that they can read each other minds. Since they work in the Circus, they show their power by one of the twins grab one item from somebody who is sitting in the row, and then the other twin would try to guess what the twin so holding. And when he says it out loud, everybody is surprised. And it would be cool doing that, but then what if you accidentally say something about your twin and they can listen. But anyways, yeah, that is what I think are the main characters so far. Since mostly there’s these two guys from some kind of agent work thing or so that are trying to find them to get some kind of answer that they only know. The author shows me something that this story would be mysterious and dramatic or so. Since so far, these 2 guys trying to find Scott and Jamie are trying to get an answer from them that they only know. I think what he reveals mostly that is important to this story is that these twins have some kind of power that not every human gets, its like a very rare power. But, that is all I know so far. Also, this story is great so far.
Try not to repeat yourself. Also, you did not mention what is direct and what was indirectly stated about the character....hmmmm?

I am currently reading the book Love, Aubrey by Suzanne Lafleur. I am on page 49 since I just recently got this book. So far the characters are Aubrey, Gran, and Aubrey’s mom. Aubrey’s mom ran away from Aubrey but other than that the author hasn’t told us much about her. Aubrey so far has a pet goldfish, her mom left and she lived alone for a couple days. After those few days Aubrey’s gran took her back to her house where now she is doing chores and living her life. Gran is Aubrey’s mother’s mom. Gran is scared Aubrey’s mom left because she gave up on Aubrey and didn’t care anymore. The author tells how worried Gran is for Aubrey. The author shows how scared Aubrey is about losing her mom forever!

The Secrets of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel-Book 3 The Sorceress;
By Michael Scott
Pg. 41
The main characters in this book are Josh and Sophie. They are twins who were ordinary; they both had a job, Josh works at the library and Sophie works at the Coffee Shop across the street. On an ordinary day, the twins see a man in black coming out of a car. They then smell an odor, something like rotten eggs. They had no clue that this man was very old, at least 500 years old. As an alchemist, magician, and necromancer, Dee (the man in black) attacks the library. Apparently, the man is looking for a book. The man who owns the shop is secretly disguised as an even older man by the name of Nicholas Flamel is hiding the book and its secrets. It contains Nicholas’s Immortality, along with his wife Perenelle. Nicholas was the first and only Alchemist. From then on, Josh and Sophie go on crazy adventures that lead up to this. Magic, Awakening, Dark Elders, and Death. Scary and exciting, this adventure last for a very long time. They are both special because for the first time in a very long time, the two of them have pure auras, one colored auras. What’s even more special is that they have pure silver and gold auras, the most rarest auras in the world. They hasn’t been a person with these auras in a million years. With all these things going on, the adventure just gets better and better.

You could also use your imagination. The author indirectly says that Josh cares for his older sister when she is Awakened first. And Sophie cares even more because Josh almost went to Dee’s side and turned against them. Not only does Josh care for Sophie but he cares for everyone. Sophie understands more after being Awakened so she is more mature. These great characters are the type that work best together.

Right now I am reading the book called Scarlett By: Cathy Cassidy. I am on page 16 and so far its a really good book and I really like it. The author indirectly says that she is a trouble maker by saying that she has gotten kicked out of 5 different schools in two years for many bad things for example she just got kicked out of her fifth school because she insulted the lunch lady about her food and it started a big fight in the lunch room and now the lunch lady that has been working at Greenhall academy (The school Scarlett just got kicked out of) has decided do quit because of the incident and I could infer that she was a troublemaker by all the things that she has done. The author directly says that Scarlet’’s mom is disappointed in her because she had gotten kicked out of all these schools and she has stuck up for her each time but she has disappointed her by keep on being so bad and breaking all the rules and consistently getting in trouble and getting kicked out of schools.
Yay! You followed directions! I love how you mention both direct and indirect characterization. Great support/evidence used as well.

ReplyDeleteThe book I am reading is called Identity Theft written by: Anna Davies, I am on page 113. The main character is Hayley, Hayley is a senior in highschool with impeccable grades.
Some Things that the author mentions about Hayley directly are: she is very smart, she is a leader, an overachiever, and she is an outcast at her school. Some things that the author mentions indirectly about Hayley is that she is determined, she has a good instincts, and she has mixed emotions for a boy at her school named Adam.
Great direct examples! Did the author not say anything that made you infer characteristics about the character?

The book that I have finished yesterday was the biography of Michael Jordan. The main character is Michael Jordan because a biography is a summary of he or/ she and what they did great in their history. For example, the author talks about how Michael Jordan won numerous championships, a plethora of mvp awards, and how he lives today. Michael is the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. The worst team in the NBA. The author talks about indirectly is about what they said in the locker room and what motivation they gave to push they to winning championships. Overall, if you really enjoy playing basketball you should read this book.
I think in a biography most of the information will be directly given to you by the author.

The book I am reading right now is called Maximum Ride by James Patterson. I’m currently on about page 160. I am probably right on one of the best parts of the story. The main characters are Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gassy, and Angel. The direct characterization is that all the characters can fly. Also, the book says Max and Fang are the oldest out of all six people. It also says that the character, Iggy, is blind. The indirect characterization is that Angel, the youngest, is very dependent on others. Another piece of indirect characterization is that when the Erasers capture Angel, they will obviously run tests and different procedures to subject 11 (Angel). One other indirect characterization is that Max, the leader, discludes Iggy and Gassy from rescuing Angel because they would delay the “operation”. This is probably the best book ever and I recommend it to everyone.
I love how you gave multiple examples of direct and indirect. Your blog comment is also very organized and easy to follow. One of the best I've read today!
DeleteI am reading A Tale Dark And Grimm,by Adam Gidwitz. The reason I love this book is because he warns you not to read it if you will get too scared and grossed out and the funny part of that is he stops you every chapter and says, "are there any kids in the room, cause you should just keep them thinking that that was the the end and hire a babysitter and sit alone and read the real ending, and that an R rated movie would be better than this book." Right now, I am on page 168 out of 256. The two main, main characters are Hansel and Gretel and the I guess Main characters are the king and queen, and Johannes Faithful. The Minor characters are The townspeople, the dragon, the devil and the devil's grandmother, the ferry boat man, the townspeople of wine, the townspeople of golden apples[real gold], the little girl murder[don't get tricked by handsome men, little girls and women out there], and the seven swallows. The story takes place in a once upon a time and in a castle and in magical and evil forests and towns and candy houses. The rising actions are I think when Hansel and Gretel run away from home, Gretel cuts her finger off, and Hansel and Gretel go their "seperate ways". All leading to the climax which I think is when Hansel and Gretel find each other again and are not sad anymore. The resolution or theme I do not have yet, but will soon and I hope it is a good and happy ending not a gory or sad ending. I almost forgot, the characters Hansel and Gretel are rich selfish children, but then become poor on their long run away from home journey. I hope that in the end that their parents love them and that they have everything they need[ even though there was a pretty good reason why they ran.!!]

I am still reading A Tale Dark & Grimm by Adam Gidwitz. I am on page eighty-nine and I am loving the book so far. The part I am reading about now includes the young king's children who is Hansel and Gretel. The story gave me direct information about Hansel and Gretel's personalities and their genes that they acquired. Adam Gidwitz stated ‘’Hansel was dark hair like his father, with curly hair and charcoal eyes. Gretel was fair like her mother, with hair that looked like it was spun from pure gold thread and eyes that shone like the sea’’ (24). After the king’s advisor, Johannes, was turn to stone to protect the king and the queen, was able to talk with the king to tell him how to undo his curse and bring him back to life. Johannes said that all the king had to do was chop off both Hansel and Gretel’s heads off. The king was heartbroken, but knew how faithful Johannes was and did what had to be done. He slashed both of their heads off and immediately Johannes came back to life. As the queen came in the king told her everything that happened, and both the king and queen wept and cried. Johannes saw their sorrow and magically put Hansel and Gretel’s heads back on and revived them back to life. Then, everyone hugged and smiled in joy. That night, Hansel and Gretel ran away to avoid getting killed again. As they were walking in a swamp they were hungry and noticed a house made out entirely of candy and sweets. they started to eat the walls and then a elderly lady walked out and welcomed them in, Similar to the kind fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel besides the lady being a witch,, the lady gave them all they can eat until they were both shaped like plums and ready to be eaten. One day the lady tricked Hansel to try and see if the oven was hot enough to cook, but she just wanted to cook him. So Hansel went in and mid way through the oven heating, he noticed that it was a trick and he would be roasted alive! So when the lady went downstairs to ask if it was hot enough he said no and the lady tried to see hot it was. Then, out of nowhere, Hansel pushed the lady in the oven and locked it. So far thats where I am, but I am loving the book.

I finished the book called Kimchi & Calamari by Rose Kent. Joseph Calderaro is an ordinary boy. He is given an essay about his heritage that he knows nothing about. He knows that he is Korean but he does not know anything about his blood-relatives. Joseph really loves his family (Who adopted him) but he wants to know more about his true heritage. Another character named Nash plays a big part in this story because he is the one who tells Joseph to research his heritage. JOseph is the main character in this book. Although this is a sad yet happy story, it shows the hardships between families and what he has to go through. The author explains everything about Joseph, what he thinks about, what he goes through in life. The author does not explain how Joseph feels about this whole situation. The author explains what he goes through but never how he feels so I had to indicate his feelings on my own.

I just finished I Emma Freke , which is written by Elizabeth Atkinson. The setting of this book is in Boston, Massachusetts in modern times. The problem of this book is that Emma does not fit in where she lives and she gets teased because of her last name. She has no one, except for Penelope, a best friend, and Stevie, a local librarian. But things start to change when Emma gets invited to a family reunion in Wisconsin. The author directly tells me that she had no friends, but the author wrote some indirect characterization and foreshadowed about what events happened next. And this is why I hope you will pick up this book and enjoy it like I did!

I read the book Revenge Of the Wannabees by Lisi Harrison. I just finished this book. The main characters are Massie, Alicia, and Claire. Massie is the leader of a clique with all the main characters and two girls that kiss up to her. She is mean, cliquey, bossy, pretty, and Popular. The author reveals indirectly that she is the one who always wants to be the best. Next, Alicia is the girl that wants to be the leader like Massie but not with Massie around. Alicia is a great leader, nice, a great dancer, and is someone who cares about other people. The author doesn’t come out and say that Alicia is kind of going against Massie in being a leader of a clique. Claire just joined the clique. She is kind of an old school girl, kind, and a girl who wants to make a lot of new friends. In the text you can figure out that Claire desperately wants to be apart of Massie's clique.

I am reading the Prince and the Pauper, by Mark Twain.I'm around page 200 and so far, it's been very exciting and suspenseful. Two boys decide to switch places for a day. One, a pauper and the other, a prince. The king dies, and the pauper has to succeed the king. But, the pauper does not know where the paper is that the king says he can succeed the king.Meanwhile, father that the prince is with commits a crime, and the family has to flee, taking the prince with. The prince repeatedly tries to explain that he is not their son, but every time he is beaten for foolishness. I can't wait to see who will end up as king. I believe the the pauper is always trying to be himself, and pushing away all his care and services given to him.The prince is very much alike the prince, and does not tolerate the treatment he is give. The prince is always acting very kind in the book, and the pauper is nice also.

I am currently reading The Hunt for the Seventh by Christine Morton-Shaw. I am on page 24. So far, the author is still in the exposition and starting to transition into the rising action. The main character in this book is a boy named Jim. He lives at home with his sister, Sally, and his father. His father is a gardener and ha gotten a job at a place called Minerva Hall. This place is like a castle and is owned by a man named Lord Minerva. Jim and Sally think that he is pretty creepy. One night, he goes into the maze that his father gardens in. He tries to get to the other end and he does. At the end, he meets a boy that he names Einstein. The boy is very smart but doesn't tell Jim his name, so Jim thought that would be the appropriate name for him. The boy leaves Jim and tells him that the only way to get out of the maze is by following the left wall. He gets out, and just before he is about to go back inside, he hears a voice, and sees a faint person in front of him telling him to "find the seventh". The author directly comes out and tells me that Jim does not want to be here. In the book it states, "I wasn't sure that I was going to like it here at all." He is terrified because the faint voice telling him to "Find the Seventh" is not going away. The author reveals indirectly about Jim is that he gets scared very easily. The book says, "Someone grabbed me-I almost jumped out of my skin..." This shows that he is scared because when someone "jumps out of their skin", it is referring to being frightened suddenly. I am inferring that this book is going to go on with a ghost story.

At the moment, I am reading the book Miss. Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children By Ransom Riggs. I am on page 97 (I started it a week ago) The main character is a 16 year old guy named Jacob Portman. As a child, his Grandfather told him stories about a home that he had lived in during world war 2. His family was killed by germans and he moved to a british island where extraordinary kids had lived. Each kid had a special power, something great about them. Some could fly or have bees living inside of them. As you can see, these were no ordinary children, but one thing connected all of them, tentacle- mouthed monsters were after all of them. But the truth is, the whole thing about the powers of the children and the monsters was just his grandfather's paranoia talking. You see, the whole orphanage was bombed and destroyed at the end of the war. But when his grandfather is viciously attacked and murdered in the woods, Jacob supposedly saw the monsters his grandfather told him about so long ago. But Jacob’s therapist said it just an illusion caused by acute stress reaction. He plans a trip across the globe in order to see the orphanage. Even though the author wrote this directly, the reader and infer from the text (which is indirect) is that Jacob is so determined to prove that him and his grandfather were not crazy and that he will solve the mystery about what really happened that night his grandfather died.

The book I am currently reading is Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children. The author is Ransom Riggs. The page I am currently on is 237 out of 300. The main character is Victor. Victor is a teenager that has peculiar powers. He can see monsters that are real but cant be seen by humans. He is 17 and Victor is shy and he keeps to himself.
The author tells me directly that Victor works at CVS pharmacy and he can see these monsters that kill children that are in the loop. But Miss Peregrines kids are in a loop in the bog and no one expects them to be there o they are safe and sound.
The author indirectly gives me clues about what is gonna happen. The author hints me with pictures and/or clues through the characters. I love this book because I truly only read mystery and realistic fiction. This book is perfect for people who enjoy a good mystery with a little bit of gore.

I am currently reading Ghost Stories by Robert Westall. I'm on page 31. There are different stories and I'm on the 4th story. The author is Charles Dickens. The main character in this story is, well they didn't say his name. He is very smart, but VERY poor. There is a ghost that lives in a cupboard. The man outsmarted the ghost. The ghost wanted the man to leave that place. The story is a tiny bit longer than two pages so there is not a lot of things to say.

18-FOOT SEA CREATURE FOUND OFF CALIF. COAST
Jasmine Santana need 15 people to help get this 18 foot sea creature out the water. The creature is an oarfish the eyes were half the size of a dollar bill.
“Because oarfish dive more than 3,000 feet deep, sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied, according to CIMI.”
The fish died because its was out of water but California scientists are doing tests on the fish. When they got it out they dragged it 75 feet by the tail. the oarfish can be up to 50 feet long.

It is really interesting to learn about these creatures that look like they are from fairy-tales. I learned that Oar fish are long fish that can grow up to 50ft long. This discovery is very important, because oar fish dive more than 3,000 ft below sea level, so very few are found. The last one found was 3ft.
I think this was definitely worth reporting, because these creatures may explain legends about sea monsters. If something so rare occurs, the public should know about it. I, for example, never knew fish this big with this shape existed! It is also a really cool topic. It can also get people thinking, seeing these cool, but dead creatures.

I am currently reading the book Forge by Laurie Halse Anderson. I am on page 155. The main character in this book is a boy named Curzon. He has been enlisted in the army by force. The weather and food conditions are harsh in the winter, with the constant threat of being attacked by the British. The author directly reveals that he gets scared easily. Every time the sergeant walks past him, he says something like, "Oh no!" or "Just the look on his face frightened me." Something that the author reveals indirectly is that Curzon doesn't let people treat him badly. For example, John Burns(his worst enemy) was promoted to sergeant of his company. Since then, John has treated Curzon like trash. He even beat him up and stole his boots in the winter. Curzon, instead of telling on John, found out that his old master had become a congressman. He meets the man(Mister Bellingham), Bellingham invites Curzon to tell him about how the army is. Curzon gets a wicked smile across his face because he tells Bellingham how John has been treating him. This was an important characteristic revealed indirectly by the author.

I am reading Chains. This book is about slavery during the revolutionary war. This book is by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book I find kinda sad because of my family history. The bad thing about this book is sometimes it can be sad and boring. The good thing is it can inform you at times but some may be fake. This story is realistic fiction. Isabelle is the main character and Ruth is her baby sister. Their "master" has died so they get a new "master" that doesn't treat them good. Their old "master" when she died was supposed to let them go free in her will but the new master took them before it could be figured out. So far I would rate the book 6/10
