Article of the Week #1

No More Curtain Calls for Elephants and Why Elephants Need Circuses and Zoos

Elephant AOW-link to article

Which claim about elephants in zoos and circuses convinces you the most? (You may want to type your response to this question in Google docs first)

Please include your first name, last initial, and class period!!!

Example Response:

The claim that I could connect with the most was the one from the second article titled Why Elephants Need Circuses and Zoos.   I feel elephants need humans in order to survive.  I thought the point about the habitat of elephants disappearing or shrinking was valid.  It is true that animals in zoos and/or circuses don’t have to worry about obtaining their own food.  It seemed sad and cruel to me that elephants have to endure walking miles and miles to obtain food and water.   Then when they trample farm fields or eat the humans’ food, they are killed.  This seems crueler then keeping them in captivity.  Also, I liked the comparison the article made to humans using horses versus humans using elephants.  It made me think.  Is there really a difference?  Why don’t people criticize the human interaction between horses and humans like they do with elephants?  I realize there are circumstances where humans have abused elephants in captivity, and perhaps humans have not always provided the best living conditions for elephants, but I’d like to think that most humans treat animals with respect.  I want elephants to be around for a long time, so I think elephants do need people to protect them and to make sure they do not go extinct.

I think elephants need to be in circuses and zoos. The 2nd article persuaded me to keep the elephants in human protection rather than putting them back in the wild. Elephants are rapidly disappearing and they are starting to become endangered. They need human help. The part in the article that says the elephants habitats are shrinking. Also, how they may have to endure walking miles in the drought season to get food and water. These 2 points made me lean towards the article. If the elephants are in the wild, they have a to endure many harsh things that they don’t endure in captivity. Captive elephants don’t have to go through the threats of being killed by gunshot, electrocution or poisoning. Also, sometimes the wild elephants raid farms which cause human deaths. So to cut down on human deaths and elephant deaths, they should be in zoos and circuses. To keep elephants from being extinct and keep calves (elephant babies) alive, elephants need human protection.

I believe that elephants should be banned from mistreatment for the public amusement.
Elephants are gentle animals. Humanity has made them grow aggressiveness and show retaliation. Otherwise, they would be harmless. We put up a fight, they defend themselves. With our barbarian tools, such as bullhooks, elephants grow fear and may accidentally hurt someone. It has nothing to do with ‘on purpose’. But, elephants have been growing up with humans since the beginning of time, so they have grown these hateful traits with us. The Los Angeles City Council is right and just for doing this act, and I completely agree with their choice.

The first article convinced me more than the second. This article was titled No More Curtain Calls for Elephants. The claim was that elephants should not entertain people at the circus. One of the pieces of evidences stated,”...their interaction with humans has often been characterized by their mistreatment.” Also, the rebuttal paragraph was very supportive of the claim. In addition, the subtitle completely explains another main idea. “They are majestic animals, not performers. The City Council should act to protect them.” I agree with this point and I think that elephants should not work to entertain other people. They should lead a life of their own and should get to do the things that regular elephants do.

My claim is about the article I read today called " No more curtain calls for elephants". My article was about how elephants should not be kept in zoos and circuses. I agree with this because while the elephants were in those zoos that we all thought were great and kind to animals, those elephants were being poked with bull hooks. For anyone that doesn't know what a bull hook is, it is a sharp hook with blunt end on it too. What I wonder is how that would feel because being hooked or hammered seems like it would hurt. I don't know about you but I would despise that feeling. What I am trying to say is that the consul made not a good chose but an amazing one to ban elephants out of those harsh places.

The claim about elephants in the zoo that convinces me the most is “Why animals need circuses and zoos.” This article convinced me that zoos are the best option for elephants because it clearly states “Human- elephant conflict sometimes leads to deaths” I thought that this was a reason to keep elephants in the zoo so that there would be less of a death threat for not only the elephants but also the people. Another reason I think its better to have elephants in zoos is because the article also states “Calves are orphaned and often die without human intervention.” I think that this is the biggest reason to keep elephants in the zoo because without our help the elephants may very well become extinct! The very last reason I think its better for elephants to stay in zoos is because of this quote from the article “In Africa, elephants may walk for miles during the drought months to find water and food.” I think that this is a reason for elephants to be in zoos because 1. these conditions can cause elephants to die. And 2. if elephants were in zoos they would be able to live a long and happy life.

I thinks elephants should be banned for public and amusement. Elephants can be very mad and aggressive to the public but the elephants are gentle. When they get mad they can destroy over a lot of property damage and they can weight up to 8 to 10,000 pounds. with our tools (bullhooks)they can get scared and someone can get hurt in the audience. So i think the Los Angeles council is doing there job right.

The story that stood out more to me is No more curtain calls for elephants because I don’t think that elephants should be treated poorly and that they should be kept hostage. I don’t think that animals really need to be surrounded by a bundle of people wanting to see he/her do tricks all day long. But with the zoo I can understand because the zookeepers give them all of the care that they really need. The elephants need to be free and be wild, be free, not get taken away from their family and never seeing them again. So that story encouraged me to don’t treat animals with disrespect, and to be kind and respectful to animals, and people, because no matter what, you will be disrespected by someone that you might not know.

Claim: Elephants should not be kept in captivity.

Elephants should not be kept in captivity for many reasons. The first reason is elephants need to have a big area to roam. In the article “No more curtain calls for elephants” it states, “...Elephants roam for miles a day…” This means that keeping elephants in exhibits will keep them from getting any time to roam and get any exercise needed. The second reason is elephants need to have softer surfaces. “...Standing on concrete or other hard surfaces,” states the article “ No more curtain calls for elephants.” In addition the article goes on to say, “ A painful middle age, marked by arthritis, cracked toenails and sore feet…” This means that keeping elephants away from their natural habitat leads to an unhealthy life. The final reason is elephants being tamed. In the article “No more curtain calls for elephants” it states, “ Taming is not gentle; it requires chaining and the bullhook.” This means in order to have an elephant become a compatible animal it requires these components to help shape the elephant into that compatible animal needed. These are some of the reasons why elephants should not be kept in captivity.

The article that convinces me more is Why elephants need circuses and zoos. This convinces me more because it has more evidence to support its main idea. For example, if you think elephants in the wild life are happy and free of disease, you are wrong. To support this, the article states that “While park rangers do what they can to protect elephants from poachers, to many are being slaughtered. With elephants being in the circus or zoo slaughtering is prevented. Also the article states “In Africa, elephants may walk for miles during the drought months to find water and food--- a harsh reality that elephants in captivity don't have to endure.” With Elephants being in circuses or zoos they can have as much water and food as they would like. Lastly,”Calves are orphaned and often die without human intervention.” When calves are in circuses or zoos the elephants can be right by their side if needed.

Elephants should not be kept in circuses to entertain people. One reason is that elephants enjoy their life in the wild. The look for vegetation, socialize with other elephants, and explore the terrain around them. In circuses, after they are done being displayed to the people, they are forced to stay within areas enforced by chains. The ground is tough and hard for their feet. Some may argue that elephants have become "domestic animals" because they have been tamed for human handling. "But taming is not gentle." Taming requires tying up the elephants and the bullhook. All of this just to get the elephant to behave well. The elephant would be taught by force.

I think that elephants shouldn't be kept in zoos or circuses because they are constantly being abused and mistaken for domestic animals. People are being accused of running through farmers lands, trampling people, and are being shot and poisoned for it when they were there first. If humans didn't bother or live anywhere near elephants wouldn't be endangered. One of the main reasons elephants are dying is because of their feet being on too hard of a surface and being chained up at night at zoos.

I believe that elephants should not be kept in enclosures, be in circuses, and used for labor. Elephants should be in there natural habitat, free to roam wherever they please. In enclosures elephants are not treated right by being speared by bullhooks and tied up by chains for hours. When elephants are tied up they are standing on concrete and can get arthritis or feet diseases. Faculties like to use bullhooks to tame the elephants but if you can treat it properly, make a relationship and, human and elephant should never share the same space you have a better chance of taming it than with violence. Although in the 1990’s Zoos stopped chaining their animals on the concrete over night it is still not right to keep them in a tiny space all day and all night. Some enclosures can be good if they are big and have lots of vegetation, woods, water, and protect the elephants from poachers that use their husks for ivory. I do believe that bullhooks and the harsh conditions can be changed for the elephants because the Los Angeles Zoo spent 40 million dollars on making the encloser more like their natural habitat but nothing will quite be as real as the wild. Elephants should be kept out of enclosures that use, bullhooks, are too tiny, have no habitat like their real one, and are not safe for them to be in.

The claim that convinces me is that animals should not be performers, they are “majestic” animals. The elephants should live their life the way they want to. I don’t think they want to live their life in cages doing tricks to survive. They should life with their family and friends. Preforming tricks is not as important as your family and friends. I think it’s cruel to poke animals to get them in a cage and torture them until they listen to your commands. I don’t think we need to enslave them and make them work for us just because we’re too lazy or want money. If they are moved from their habiat, they will not like if and could cause them to get pains and unhealthy. I think they deserve to live free in the wild.

I think the better claim was “ Why elephants need circuses and zoos” . I think this because they gave more information about the topic and even though it was shorter it had more evidence to support its side of the claim. One of the pieces of evidence was “human conflict can lead to injury or death, elephant or human.” Another one was when they said elephant habitats are rapidly disappearing because of homes. Also it says claves are left orphaned and are most likely to die. I do not agree with performing elephants but its better than getting killed in the wild by hunters or of starvation. I do agree with putting animals in the wild and letting them have space to roam. And also that they shouldn’t be killed by hunters. This is why I thought this was the better side.

I am convinced by the article, Why elephants need circuses and zoos. Elephants are a lot more safe in a zoo or circus and people are safe from elephants. In this article, it said that elephants do not get hurt when they are trained in the circus or in a zoo, elephants are not going to get killed by a human when a human is hunting, and since elephants are in a good habitat, there will be no human or elephant deaths because of conflict between humans and elephants. This is important because elephants are going to be happy living in either a zoo or a circus because they get treated well there and also they get to interact with humans in a non-violent way. Also, the humans can enjoy seeing elephants. The elephants will not be disappearing any more. Elephants will now be cared for. This solution will be good for both humans and elephants.

I think that the claim that I could connect to the most would be the first article titled No more curtain calls for elephants. I believe that it was more convincing and it made many great points. For example the article claimed that “For 8,000 to 10,000 pound creatures who spend all day on their feet and can live into their 40’s the consequence of that confinement was a painful middle age marked by arthritis cracked toenails and sore feet”. They didn't mention that if the elephants that live in the wild are on there feet all day as well because they are walking miles and miles looking for the food that they need to survive so basically they are enduring the same amount of work/pain. Also the animals are forced to do things that they don’t want to in both environments, the wild or in the zoo or in a circus. For example according to the article some elephants are forced to carry lumber around which is very harsh on the elephants especially there backs. In the zoo’s and circuses it is hard on them they are forced to e tamed/trained which is not there choice it it requires many harsh things including chaining the animal and using a bull hook and come to the expense f the elephants well being. They are forced to entertain drag logs through force and the trainers aren't gentle. According to the article “elephants have been part of human history for thousands of years and their image as gentle giants”. But I believe that if people want to see the elephants they should see the elephants n there natural habitat elephants doing what they are meant to do. In conclusion I belive that it is cruel to keep the animals captive.

I think elephants should be kept in zoos. I still think that they should stop abusing them . But elephants are now being treated a little better than before. Like the Los Angelos zoo for example. They are making a better habitat for elephants, like a habitat that has more things that elephants would see in the wild, like logs. Also the zoo in LA is putting in heated floors for their zoo barns. Elephants should be kept but in better conditions that they are kept in now. I think elephants are going to do fine in zoos if the zoos acknowledge that they are treating them badly.

    Elephants Debate

The claim about elephants in zoos and circuses that convinces me the most is “The Los Angeles city council is poised to consider a measure that would in effect prevent elephants from performing in traveling shows and exhibitions in the city”. This claim convinces me the most because it is stating facts about how the elephants should not be held captive for uses of the circuses or fairs. I believe that this side of argument is correct because these huge creatures need to be treated good for them to be walking this earth. If we do not treat them nice hen they will become extinct. These animals deserve to be in the place that they want to be and not in a circus or a fair where they are being forced to work. I agree with the vanish of the bull-hook because it was forcing the animals and hurting the animals to do what they don’t want to do. I am happy that people finally realized that elephants are amazing creatures that need to be taken care of and not kept in a barn with heated concrete floors. All in all, this side convinced me the most and I agree with this side.

Elephants, have been harmless to people and we shouldn’t hurt them. People have been caging them, and giving them little room to roam. Elephants are harmless to people and only if we threaten them they will attack. Using weapons to control them have made elephants scared and more likely to attack. People who are caging elephants to protect them are really taking away their freedom. The reason people think they need to protect them is because of other people and if you just stop people from killing them then they will be free and not be endangered. People that put elephants in circuses are training the elephants using force. Circuses are moving the elephants around in chains and giving them no freedom whatsoever. People who leave elephant in their own place are right we should not cage them we should set them free.

I believe that the claim from the first article, No More Curtain Calls for Elephants convinced me the most. I think the things the zookeepers do to the elephants is very cruel. Even when their not in some fake habitat they’re chained in cold zoo barns, and have to stand on cold concrete floors which can cause them to have problems with their feet, like having cracked toenails. Also, the fact that zookeepers use bullhooks to tame them doesn’t sound like something that would be happening to the elephants out in the wild. I wondered, if elephants aren’t doing what they would normally do, wouldn’t that harm them even more? I mean, think about it. What if humans were forced to live a life where they couldn’t choose what to do, and they were forced to do something else? The same goes for elephants. If they’re fine out living in their natural habitat, why bother them? People who are in control of them are basically leading them to death. In Asia, they force these animals to haul lumber, and also ferry tourists in Thailand. So, it makes them work harder, causing the amount of injury to rise, and basically leading them through the path of death. Also, taming the elephants isn’t an easy job either. But, no matter what, these animals are ALWAYS taught by force. I think people are just taking advantage of elephants and don’t really care about how it could affect these peaceful animals. Overall, it’s important to know that elephants are just like us. Elephants are fine on their own, but they also need help as babies. Just like us, we need our parents to help us learn. So, if you’re fine living the life you want to live, make sure everyone has the opportunity to do that too, even animals in the wild.

I think that the No More Curtain Calls for Elephants convinced me the most. This article convinced me the most because i learned abou how some of the elephants were treated. The bullhook is one tool that was used by zoo workers to poke and prod at the elephants. I also though this article was the most convincing because it says that elephants zoo exhibits are becoming more comfortable for the elephants and also where they sleep has warm floors now. I think that it is important to ban bullhooks and make new habitats for the elephant within the zoo because other wise they can come down with diseases and they can die. But also because it makes the elephant more comfortable and happy witch is a better tourist attraction because the tourists dont want to see a sick elephant just sitting around all day.

The article that I could connect to the most was Why elephants need circuses and zoos, I know that elephants want freedom. They want to do anything that they would like but I think elephant can survive longer in zoos and circuses. I know that animal cruelty can kill the animals in the zoos and circuses but most people would not do that. Most human beings have a heart. At zoos and circuses now t do not beat their animals, they do repetition and reward. Until he finally gets it right then he will get his reward. In zoos it is a lot safer because there is humans looking after them. In the wild there is animals that could kill the elephants for food. It is better to keep them in the zoos so that they don;t go into villages and damage them. Overall, I think that elephants should be kept in zoos.

The article that I connected to most was "No more curtain calls for elephants". First, elephants could get hurt or abused by people with the circus. " their interactions with humans has often been characterized by their mistreatment". In their original habitat, they would not get hurt by humans. Second, elephants should be able to roam free in their habitat and live with others just like it. In a circus, elephants can't hunt for food and socialize with other elephants, they listen to orders and get whipped. It is not fair to elephants that they are being taken from their habitats and being forced to work at a circus. I agree with the article because it is against having elephants in circuses.

The claim that convinces me about the unfair treatment on domestic animals in public place, for example the L.A. zoo in the past before it’s council meeting. Even just how I said of the L.A. zoo and about how badly the treatment of the domestic foreign wildlife of large mammals. The environment of the elephants of a mid-age were so left uncared for the animals that in direct quote the article stated “For 8,000 to-ten thousand-pound creatures who spend all day on their feet and can live into their 40s, the consequences of that confinement was a painful middle age, marked by arthritis, cracked toenails and sore feet”. This proves that the habitats barely cared for and made means that this is considered a very deep felony that is charged from animal abuse. One of the most damaging abusive taming device there is in the L.A. zoo is the bullhook. The bullhook is used for as stated to be “Used for taming” stated by ’No More Curtains calls for elephants’.

In this article they stated that there are lots of elephants that can die. This does not shock me because they are pocking them with sharp spars and they are having the elephants stay in cramped and hard places. They stand there for hours causing there feet to be sore and then they may not be able to preform as well. This is very hard on the animals and if all these elephants are dying they have to get more then those die and so on. If this isn't changed these majestic animals can go instinct. Elephants should be in the wild and if they are in circuses or zoos they should have lots of space and they should be put around trees and mud so they can be free until show time. This is a problem that needs to be fixed. #ElephantFreedom

the article that persuaded me the most was against keeping elephants in captivity entitled No more curtain calls for elephants. I believe that elephants should not be treated as some side show attraction and that these noble creatures deserve their freedom. The elephants do not receive all the luxuries that are usually promised to the public. They may be chained, poked by a sharp and hazardous object known as the ‘bullhook’, and have unsuitable habitats. The ground of these enclosures are hard and not good for animal that depends on its feet constantly for support. It can cause severe foot diseases like arthritis, cracked toenails, and sore feet. As if that wasn't enough, they are forced into training and are aggravated by unwillingly being stabbed by the bull hook. Aggressive behavior shown by trainers and zoo keepers should be stopped immediately! I personally love elephants so I am outraged by this mistreatment.

My opinion comes from the article Why Elephants Need Circuses And Zoos because i think they need a better life than the harmful outside world. Elephants are rapidly disappearing because many poachers kill and sell for money and too many are being slaughtered but if they were in a zoo they would not be killed. Poachers aren't the main reason elephants should be in a zoo it is also the elephants themselves. Elephants are not always nice they have been known to kill and destroy fields in villages. Zoos can tame them to be nice and entertain the crowd. This is my opinion because i feel that elephants could enjoy the zoos without dieing elephants need people to care. This is why elephants need zoos and circuses to have a happier life.

Before many of them were captured to work as circus animals, they lived there nice, regular life in the forest. If at all, they can be in zoos that have things that the wild also has. For example, The Los Angeles Zoo spent more than 40 million dollars just on one zoo. Elephants should not be treated as slaves with whipped with bull hooks. They should be free!

Majestic and royal animals, elephants, taken from their homes and used for different purposes, zoos and circuses. After reading both sides of the argument I was more convinced by, No More Curtain Calls For Elephants. I think that the treatment towards the elephant when in circuses and zoos aren’t fair. Though the environment in the zoos is almost the same, there is no place better than home. Also when they are in zoo barns, they are often tied up and standing on concrete floors, which causes injuries to their feet, such as cracked toenails. Also, the zookeepers add to the cruel treatment by using bullhooks. The bullhooks were used to tame the elephants, but unfortunately the zookeepers hurt them instead. Not only are elephants taken from their natural habitat but they are also not seen as living things. By this I mean that they are not cared for like they should be. Just imagine being taken from where you belong and being told to be and act as a whole different person. From my point of view, that is exactly what the elephants are experiencing. In conclusion, I strongly believe elephants should be given their own freedom and left alone.

My opinion came from the article "Why Elephants need Circuses and Zoos," because in this article it explains why elephants should be kept in circuses or zoos. I agree with this, because I think that the elephants are much safer with human protection and guidance. For example, "...migration routes, often leading to human-elephant conflict." The article goest on to say, "...and human-elephant conflict sometimes leads to deaths -- of both elephants and humans. Another problem with these large creatures being in the wild is poachers. While in the Zoo or circus elephants can be protected by other humans.

  31. should elephants be put in circuses or performances? i think the should because it states in the article that every day elephants die of poachers or not enough food. In a circus they have complete safety and food. When you keep elephants in the wild there are a main food source because of all the meat on them. Say you were a lion looking for food would you get a rat or a elephant the elephant would end up dieing. if elephants are kept in zoos they don't have to worry about anything because they are always safe. Another reason is they have food coming in non stop so the elephants can get the nutrition they need. When the elephants are in the circus they get lots of attention and elephants would feel happy and hope they can put up there next show.

The article No more Curtain Calls for Elephants persuaded me, that elephants should be free and not kept in captivity. The article talked about how elephants are treated poorly and get poked, prod, or struck with a bullhook, that can resemble a hammer. This is not good for the elephants because elephants just want to be free and roam around instead of being trapped in zoos and circuses where they are not happy. Second, The article talked about how elephants as they grow up, start to get arthritis, cracked toenails and sore feet. This happens from being confined in zoo barns and standing on concrete and other hard surfaces all day in zoos. Third, Elephants need the right environment to live in to be healthy. Because elephants are in confined spaces in zoos, elephants are not getting the environment they are used to like grass areas, hills, rocks, and dirt. This can make the elephants sad and can cause them to be unhealthy because they are not in there right surroundings as a regular elephant. In conclusion, I think elephants should be free and not be kept in zoos and circuses where they are not happy.

Well, I personally don’t believe that elephants should be in zoos or circus for peoples entertainment. I say this because, I love elephants and they are my favorite animals. I don’t want them to be treated wrongly or get beaten for doing something wrong. When you are in a circus, you are constantly moving especially when you are a stage animal. It can cause cracked toenails, sore feet and arthritis. Elephants are like humans they need to eat and rest. How would you feel if you were caged up all day long and had nothing but a hard, cold, cement floor, that would just be awful. Though they do get some exercise in a day it is useless exercise, walking around for five minutes and then going back into a cage where you are tied up and fed who knows what? Elephants are born to be free and to run around in the dirt and on the planes and rocks. They are not used to be cooped up and not being active. Overall, elephants should be free or at least have better living conditions.

  35. I feel that the letter about the no elephants in circuses and zoos is a good opinion and I agree with the L.A. side of No more curtain calls for elephants. The other letter was a bad and thoughtless opinion on my part because they sounded very greedy and that they didn't really care. Also, I think they didn't notice that more torture and harm will occur to the elephants more if the humans take care of them instead of self care or other wild animals and other elephants. When the L.A. City Council said that if they are protected by humans, they won't be harmed or killed by the humans. I feel like that doesn't make any sense and that they are being modest and not trust worthy when they are putting things like"Captive elephants don't face the threat of being killed by humans from gun shots, to, electrocution, and/or poisoning as they compete for resources or because their IVORY is valuable COMMODITY. IVORY= a hard and white part of the tusks on an elephant or other animals. COMMODITY= a raw substance and can be coffee or copper, etc.

Should the City Council let pass the law to keep elephants from being in circuses? I think they should pass the law, and stop elephants from performing in any type of show or circus. When they are training these elephants to be in shows and circuses, the trainers are forcing and teaching them to do things that are very uncomfortable for them. Like you would never see an elephant in the wild doing the movements they are doing in these shows? But one of the main problems is the things the trainers are using to teach the elephants. They are using bullhooks and chains. These hurt the elephants and aren't very pleasant for them. another big problem is the terrain they are in. Even in zoos, they are trained and kept in cement areas. The spaces are also really small. Elephants are getting foot diseases and they aren't living in comfort. Elephants need the hills, grass, lakes, and all of that stuff, not cement cells. On the other side the City Council is saying that the elephants are dying because of these natural habitats. But that is the life cycle. Some will not make it. Some elephants will. In conclusion I think the city council should pass the law to protect the elephants from being in shows and circuses.

I agree with No more curtain calls for elephants because elephants should not be "chained in zoo barns, standing on concrete or other hard surfaces." Stated "No more curtain calls for elephants." Elephants should be in Africa or Asia in their home where there is softer ground like grass and dirt not to bee seen in front of millions of people on stages and get send to other places elephants should be in there habitat out in the wild. Another reason why i agree with "No more curtain calls for elephants." is because elephants were treated bad they were pocked, prod with a tool that looked like a hammer called a bull hook just to get tamed just for entertainment even if L.A. Zoo did make some change some things like the ground and did not chain them up anymore and didn't use the bullhook anymore it still wasn't the same as the real thing it still wasn't like home for the elephants. This is why I agree with No more curtain calls for elephants.

After reading both sides of the articles I think that I agree with the article entitled No More Curtain Calls For Elephants. I think that elephants should not be taken away from their home for people watch it them be miserable performing or just standing. I think that the elephants that are taken away from their home and family are treated unfair. Can you imagine if you were taken from your house and family to be in a circus or zoo? I know that if I was I wouldn't like it. In zoos they at least try to make it feel like home but it is not the same. often elephants are forced to stand up day and night which can cause injuries on their feet. some may think that at the zoo the animals are treated with care but sadly no the animals are forced to do things and if not they get hurt. In conclusion I think that elephants should be left alone in their home with their family.

"No more curtain calls for elephants"convince me the most because I personally thought that it had more information about many elephants are getting miss treated and it gave you details off why they got miss treated for reasons like attacking zookeepers or people just watching them perform. What capture my attention is that elephants been around for more than 1,000 years and that why they ban bull hook being use on elephants because elephants been in are humanity for a long time and their try to keep that going for more year. zoo's spend like $40 million dollars on improving their habit for elephants.Zoo stop chaining elephants over night. i wonder why did they chain them over night?.

While reading both articles on the paper, what I would think more about and understand more is the article titled No more curtain calls for elephants. Why I choose that is because of how, Elephants need to be with their families, and protect each other, and help each other. Sure, people can take care of them, but it’s just that.. They are trained and need to work hard to do a
circus performance, and it’s just not relaxing. They need to be in the wild where they are supposed to be. They need to live their life, make their own choices. I feel like that elephants should not be held in circuses, being trained hard for them to stress and try to work hard to impress the people around. They need to do things they were made to do, they are born to do, like us people, we have people who care about us, now we must care for them. Elephants need to have that feeling, to feel that they can do something. In conclusion, I think that I can relate more to the article, No more curtain calls for elephants.

I think the first article convinces me more because its more substantial than the second article. I also think that the first article is more convincing than the second because it adds more detail and real life situations that support the claim. I especially like the part about the bullhook because it made me very sad yet convinced. Another good situation was the one about hauling lumber and being abused for human entertainment. One other thing that really struck me was that elephants used to stand on concrete so they would get arthritis. Articles like these are written so that people understand what's involved in taming elephants. I chose this article as the most convincing because it told me that elephants were abused in order to tame them.

The article that convinced me the most was: No more curtain call for elephants. I feel that even though elephants need human help, they should not be treated the way they are, no animal should be treated that way. I thought that the point about how that they would be locked up and that can damage the elephant was true. People may say that they protect elephants while they do the exact opposite. Elephants may need the treatment that we can give them but they cannot survive the pain of captivity and taming. Using bullhooks like hammers are bad for the animals and could hurt the relationship between elephants and humans even harder. The section of the article explains that while the gentle giants are growing, they must stand in a confined space due to lack of care. This leads to arthritis, cracked toenails and sore feet. This could affect how an elephant may act in a circus performance and could make the circus crew angry. In conclusion, I think that elephants should be able to freely roam to wherever they please, they can even stay at the zoo’s that spent a lot of money on making a good environment for elephants.

I think that, the article titled "No More Curtain Calls For Elephants" sucked me in more. I mean the elephants should be able to live their life and support themselves alone. Taking an elephant and putting it in an act is like forcing a human to do an act. I believe that the article about elephants should be in act's but they need to be free. The other article was bad when it was talking about how he elephants are lazy and not doing things actively, well I'm not that active are you gonna make me do tricks now? If I was them I say would you like to do tricks and stuff for a crowd. Why should an elephant have to when they don't want to. Also if an elephant doesn't want to do something they probably hurt it if itoesn't listen animal abuse! NO MORE ELEPHANT SHOWS!

The article “Why Elephants Need Circuses and Zoos” convinced me the most to put elephants in zoos and circuses. From reading that article, I feel that elephants need people to live a long healthy life. One quote that impacted me was, “Captive elephants don’t face the threat of being killed by humans from gunshot, electrocution, poisoning...” This made a good point to me because all of those things are painful. An elephant who is just roaming and living in the wild like they were supposed to do could result in a death. That is unjust. Also, in the text, it said that when elephants are held in safe place, not in the wild, they are not at risk of getting a disease. So, if an elephant were to get a disease the elephant would suffer in the wild with no help from humans. I think that it is a good idea for humans to take elephants into their care and have elephants along for many more years without suffering.

"why Elephants need circuses and zoos' really captured my attention in a good way. Statistics show that leaving elephants in their natural habitat could keep the elephants comfortable but not safe. I recently have seen a commercial about how elephants are dying in their natural habitat from hunters and the article only supported this theory. The statistics show that elephants are valuable to hunters and in order to keep the safe in my opinion. Are zoos. Zoos keep the elephants taken care of and secure. Zoos have recently even put features from elephants natural habitat in the zoo to make the elephants more at home in zoos. So I think elephants can continue to stay in circuses as long it is safe and have them in zoos as well.

I can connect to the article No More Curtain Calls for Elephants. I think it is cruel to lock up a wild life animal that is not taken care of well. It said in the article that the elephants are having foot problems because they are on their feet all day and they are standing concrete. When you have to walk around a lot all day, don’t your feet start to hurt? Or feel the sigh of relief of taking off your shoes at the end of the day? Well animals are like people too. Also when they are trained elephants get poked and pricked by bullhooks.

I think that elephants shouldn't be in captivity. I support this by saying that they don't deserve to be there and that's not what they were intended for. It is ok to ride them in the wild like in Asia. But to have them hurt and forced against their will to preform for the circus. They hurt them not even for the show but in the trailers. They also transport the elephants on trains with the circus which is not good for the elephants. Now zoos are different. They keep the animal safe but also show them to the public. I think yes, they are way safer in a zoo. But they can be hassled by the public. And they can get angry by the people looking at them and invading their habitat. Overall, I think that elephants should be let outside where they really belong.

The article that convinced me the most was the one that talked about how elephants need to be in the wild. I agree with that article because I believe that elephants should be free. I agree with this article because the circuses and zoo’s use something dangerous called a bull hook . A bullhook is a long stick with a hook at the end which they poke or hurt the elephants with. I also agree with the article because the elephants should be free in the wild to do what elephants normally do in the wild. Instead, they are always cramped in cage and beaten with a bullhook. That’s why I think that elephants should be able to be free in the wild.

Also in the Circuses and Zoos the animals can't be slaughtered by the poachers because there in the Zoos and Circus which protects them from being killed. Another reason why Elephants needs circus and zoos is because the elephants need to learn how to be tamed and if there not tamed they'll probably kill someone because they'll think that the humans are trying to kill them. Also if the Zoos and Circuses teach them how to trust other people and animals then they'll cooperate more, have fun, and won't be afraid anymore of anything. The article really made me thought that a lot of creatures in the world are at danger, everywhere. The claim I made was that elephants in zoos and circuses should not be held there and should be let go in the wild, like Africa and Asia, where they should belong. As I read the article I learned that they are being trained with force, not care. For example, “Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus chains elephants to trains to teleport them and uses bullhooks to manage them, according to reports by the L.A. Department of Animal Services...” This is a very good evidence, because it tells you that those people are not caring about the animal environment. I think that all living beings need to be cared, not just kept in a place without care. I do like that the Los Angeles Zoo actually spent some money so that they can “improve” the elephants life at the zoo. I also read that by 2014 all member facilities should be instructed to adopt animals. I don't like that these elephants are being forced too being trained with bullhooks. This is why I think that elephants and other animals should be let free for the wild, where they belong.

The claim I connected with was the second one, because I can't stand animals being abused in their natural habitat. Humans may be trying to help elephants get there home back, but for now they need human protection from other humans. Till elephants get their home back they are protected in zoos and circuses from poachers. Also because humans and elephants are fighting for land if elephants live along side humans and learn to trust them then it will be safer for everyone. I feel bad that elephants can't live in there natural homes but it is safer and they won't become endangered. I agree with other article to but I had to pick this one, just because the wild will be to dangerous for our worlds beautiful elephants. Elephants are also being treated better in circuses and zoos because if they weren't I would have sided with the other article for their absolute safety. I have seen people in zoos use bull hooks on elephants and it is horrible so it is good that they have been band. That is why humans will have to protect elephants and why elephants need our protection.

I think that the article about the elephants being released from zoos and circuses is more convincing because if circuses and zoos are still being used then the elephants in captivity could be getting hurt severely in the attempt of taming these animals. One method people use in the attempt of taming these animals is a bullhook, this is a tool with a sharp end on it that trainers use to hurt these animals. I agree with the article that elephants should be free and not forced to do circus acts. In the article it said that some zoos are treating these animals better, but some circuses claim that they are to but still use bullhooks and other heartful methods, so you can’t be sure if they are lying or not. I think that the elephants should be let back into their natural habitat.

The claim that definitely stood out to me was about how badly elephants are being mistreated in captivity. Elephants being in captivity is not ok, they can develop serious diseases such as arthritis, and the living conditions they are put under are not 100% suitable to their needs. Elephants are being prodded, poked, and bothered all day long. Elephants should be able to be free in their natural habitat. Although poachers still do exist it’s better to take a chance with poachers then having the poor elephants being mistreated and miserable in their daily lives. Some may say that elephants living conditions have been improved in captivity, but an domesticated animal should not be forced to do things against its nature.

The article states, "Captive elephants don't face the threat of being killed by humans from gunshot, electrocution, or poisoning as they compete for resources or because their ivory is a valuable commodity." Basically the elephants are kept very safe in the zoos. They don't have to die of starvation or dehydration. All the food they need is there for them. They don't have to go on 100 mile treks in search of food and water. Plus, they decorate the living area to look like the wild, with rocks and waterfalls and grass. It is a living heaven!

I think that the claim on the second page supporting the fact that elephant would need human care to survive. Much of their natural habitat these days has been polluted or was built upon. They would not be able to survive in the harsh conditions. Not to mention the numerous poachers out there who are killing the elephants for the valuable ivory skin. If humans are not there to feed them, elephant will have to walk great distances just to find water to drink or food to eat. They have to deal with the harsh condition with their high capability of getting foot disease. When they are in captivity, they are trained gently with command and reward. They are not hurt in the process of being tamed. Also, it would be good for people to see elephants up close so they can acknowledge that they are well cared for in captivity of humans. The article “No more curtain calls for elephants” convinces me most about why elephants shouldn’t be in zoos and circuses . I think that they should not be used in zoos and circuses because they were created for a purpose on this Earth, and that was not to show them off. Also, they should remain in the wild because zookeepers use a “bullhook” to set the elephant straight if it is doing any harm. In paragraph 3 of the article “No more curtain calls for elephants”, It says, “Zookeepers entered elephants’ enclosures and maintained control over the animals with the bullhook. With one blunt end and a sharp hood on the other, it resembles a hammer. Keepers used it to poke, prod or strike.” The elephant should be able to roam free in it’s natural habitat and not have to be chained up. In addition, when elephants stand on concrete floors all day, it causes cracked toenails and sore feet, marked by arthritis. The Los Angeles Zoo spent more than $40 million trying to create a habitat for the elephants like they would find in the wild, yet it is not nearly as good as what elephants would experience in the natural wild. Overall, I think that it is a good idea to keep elephants in the wild. Besides, not everyone wants to see just the elephants when they go to a zoo or a circus. Zoos and circuses can be just as successful and just as popular without elephants.

With all the information I learned, the claim in ‘’Why elephants need circuses and zoos” has convinced me the most. I believe that elephants should be kept with humans. Even though the article said that the elephants were being kept in chains and were living in poor condition, people have come to realize what they are doing is having a bad affect on the elephants. For example, in zoos the elephants were living on concrete and was resulting in painful elder years and a weaker body. The article also included that the elephants amount of space was too small. After the people were seeing what was happening to them they started to expand their habitat, place better flooring, and at night they weren't going to chain the elephants anymore. Also another reason why elephants should not be kept in the wild is because when there are droughts in the wild, the poor elephants would have to walk miles to find food and water, and would usually not make it on time. Elephants are also being killed by poachers and fences that run through villages. If they lived with humans this wouldn't happen. When elephants are being trained for circuses they learn how to behave and interact with humans better. They would also have to worry about dying from having no food and water. If elephants lived with humans they would have a easier, healthier and happier life.

I agree with the No more curtain calls for elephants article.
I think that elephants should roam free, not be on concrete for a long time. Also elephants are wild animals that need to be free.I believe that the zoo should have at least 3-4 acres for elephants. I am very happy about what the L.A zoo did for the animals. The L.A zoo spent more than $40 million dollars to build a new habitat. including, several acres for elephants, which is made of dirt, grass, hills, logs, trees, etc. The animals also got heated barns.
In the zoo they got rid of bullhooks. I still think they need to be on their own because there is no harm in that and so the elephants can relax and not have to be in circuses and fairs. I feel bad for the elephants because a lot of them are in fairs and circuses and they are basicly slaved. This concludes my thinking on why elephants are majestic animals not performers.

The first article convinced me more than the second article. The claim was that elephants are not meant for entertaining others but meant to be in the wild where they belong. I feel that elephant don’t really need humans to take care of the because elephants are wild and they learn either from their parents and/or siblings so they really don’t need other interactions between them and humans. Its true that the elephants don’t need to maintain their food because the Zookeepers are taking care of all that but elephants need to learn for themselves in order to survive. Even though elephants need to be trained in order to entertain people but why can’t they use verbal words or even signals instead of physical contact. These elephants don’t deserve to get abused just for entertaining. Like the article said, there is less and less elephants in the wild because of the circuses. People should just leave them alone and let them live how they were raised to be. These people shouldn’t harm animals no matter what’s the situation is. If they continue doing this, wouldn’t all the elephants go extinct.

I agree with the article, “No more curtain calls for elephants”, because elephants deserve the freedom they have always had. While being held captive, they were chained to the zoo barns at night, and standing on hard surfaces, hurting their feet because of their weight. This will eventually lead to arthritis, which causes cracked toenails and sore feet. Keepers of these elephants will even use weapons on these animals, forcing them to do what they want. In the present, most of these things were improved, and elephants live better lives. But even they improved, the elephants are still not in their natural habitat, which they would enjoy much more. Elephants in the wild are also being held captive and killed for entertainment, and money from their ivory tusks. Instead of taking these massive animals into small cages, which will eventually kill the elephant, people could keep up security cameras and guards around the area to make sure no poachers enter an elephant sanctuary. In conclusion, I think elephants should be free and not disturbed by people.

    Claim: Elephants should be free

Elephant are not show animals, They are very exotic animals that roam all day looking for food and water. When we take that away from them they become sick and miserable. when the elephants don’t roam and get exercise they become weak and their feet become injured. Those injuries are “marked by arthritis, cracked toenails and sore feet.” as they say in the article “No more curtain calls for elephants” The BULLHOOK was also a major “point” because torching elephants to move is not the way to treat them. Why hurt them if you can treat them? Like you could use wheat or whatever they like to move them except for forcing them! Well, I think elephants should be in their natural habitat in the wild because if they are in the train car their feet become sore from flat hard land. Why use them while you can treat them properly in the wild?

The information I have uncovered, the claim is in "Why elephants needs circuses and zoos". I believe that elephants should be in Zoos and Circuses. I also believe that they should be tamed with love and not hit. People should not torture animals like the Elephants they shouldn't be hit with a bull hook they should be cared for because most elephants are getting killed because of their ivory. Most of the elephants don’t kill on purpose they accidentally kill humans because the humans hurt them and then they get scared which revolves in death. The elephants should not be tortured. It said in the article it stated that the vets knew how they were getting foot diseases it was people made the animal stand on hard things and heated floors. These elephants don’t need to be hit to be tamed I think these people can tame the elephants by loving them any bonding with the giant animal because I know we wouldn't want to be poked with bull hooks and stuck in chains standing and getting foot diseases.

“They are majestic animals, not performers.” claimed the article No More Curtain calls For Elephants. I believe that animals should stop performing because there taming is not gentle and is actually quite harsh. Zookeepers tame and control the animals with a bullhook by poking, annoying, or hitting them. Elephants are gentle creatures that should be treated with respect, they shouldn't have to be harmed or hurt to be trained. No More Curtain calls For Elephants stated “When they weren't on display in cramped exhibits, they were chained in zoo barns, standing on concrete or other hard surfaces.” Elephants are large and extremely heavy so 8000-10,000 lb creatures that are not usually sitting around on their butts can easily get sever foot diseases. No More Curtain calls For Elephants also mentioned “Ringling Bros. and

Elephants should not be kept in captivity and instead should be in the wild where they belong. One reason being they “maintained control over the animals with the bullhook.” Meaning they practically torture the elephants to make them behave. Another reason is that “elephants roam miles a day,” so when they lock them up in small habitats in a zoo with concrete floors, they are taking away so much of their lifestyle, they are basically destroying the majestic beasts that elephants are.Lastly, “elephants are not horses.” So, we should not treat them as such. We use them for fun and hard labour, not taking into account what they are doing to the elephants. Elephants deserve to live in the wild, and humanity should be ashamed of what they did to the majestic creatures.

In the article, "No More Curtain Calls For Elephants" there was an argument on whether elephants should be let in the wild, or if they should be kept in captivity. I think that elephants should be kept in captivity for many reasons. First of all, elephants in zoos are much safer than they are out in the wild. In the article, it stated that out in the wild where elephants roam, they have to walk on foot for miles just to find food or water. On their journey for food and water, they could get poisoned by poachers. There are a lot of illegal hunters that kill elephants for the ivory on their tusks. If the elephants are at the zoo, they have no risk of getting severely killed by hunters. They also don't even have to search for food and water that they need. They get food that fills their stomachs, and clean water each day. Most people think that elephants should be allowed to be free in the wild, and that zoos make the elephants uncomfortable. But in the L.A. zoos, the workers expanded all of the exhibits, and cushioned the floors to make the animals feel more relaxed. Also, they got rid of the chains that were attached to the elephants at night. The wild may be good for wild elephants, but with the risk of not finding food, and being killed by poachers, staying in the wild is not worth it. The zoo is the place to be.

I agree with the article No More Curtain Calls for Elephants because of many reasons. Elephants should not be kept in captivity. The first reason is being tamed. The article No More Curtain Calls for Elephants has stated “ Taming is not gentle; it requires chaining and the bullhook.” If you were any animal, would you think it’s fair for humans to threaten you with something similar to a hammer? For animals to be tamed, you have to shape them into a trusting animal with a weapon that is hurtful? My second reason is that elephants need a big space to roam. Elephants don’t deserve to be doing tricks for entertainment or being disturbed at zoos. Elephants are meant to roam freely, to explore. They shouldn’t have cracked feet or arthritis where they belong. Those are two of the many reasons why elephants shouldn’t be kept in captivity.

The artlice that conviced me was "No more curtain calls for elephants". I think this because the elephants should have been getting freedom for as long as they live. They were getting in zoo barns and they had to stand on the hard concrete floor. That is bad for their feet because they are holding their on weight which is 8,000 to 10,000 pounds! Because of this the elephants will get a disease called arthritis where the toenails are craked and the feet are sore. The zookeepers are also controling them with something called a bullhook. A bullhook is a stick with a sharp hook at the end. Now the living environment for the elephants are imporved but it could get better. They are getting killed for entertainment and circuses too. Overall, I think that elepahnts should be left alone and should have freedom.

Personally, I thought that the second article was more convincing. She was a professional and she had experiance. She also explained clear evidence that the elephants would be in worse shape if we did not interact with them. Poachers are the main problem for elephants. She told us that we do not teach them with force, like the first article said we did. She said that captive elephants are in less danger from things like poachers and guns. I did not like that the first article said that elephants are free. Elephants are very endangered out in the wild. Zoos are circuses are the better choice for the elephants.

I think that elephants (or any other animal) should not be in circuses or zoos. They are often abused, beaten and treated in very hard and terrible conditions. In The article "No more curtain calls for elephants" They stated that "Elephants roam for miles a day, foraging for vegetation" This is how it should be! Humans instead, confine them to solitary uncomfortable pens, to where they gain arthritis, wounded feet, and fractured toenails. These pens are like jails compared to Africa and Asia. In the circus and sometimes in zoos they use the bullhook, the bullhook is a large hook with a sharp end and a dull end. They use it to hit, bunt, and prod the elephants, sometimes to the point where they bleed and get critically damaged. Elephants started in the wild and that's how they should stay, but with humans using there environment, there's nowhere they can go.

The claim that convinces me is that Elephants should be in zoos and shows because they would have a better life then they would in the wild, because as the second article said it could take a month or two to even find water in the wild, but if the Elephants were a part of the shows and the zoo they would get water basically when they want some, or when the zookeeper or show keeper would notice they are really sweaty and need water. Also it could be a while in the wild to find food , but if they were in a show or a zoo they could get food three times a day and not starve to death in the wild.

Claim: Elephants should not be in zoos or circuses.
I agree with the article “No more curtain calls for elephants” because it convinced me more that elephants should not be in zoos or circuses for example, in the article it states, “...marked by arthritis, cracked toenails, and sore feet.” This means, elephants are standing on hard surfaces and not treated correctly as they should be. Not only should people be entertained but the animals should be comfortable entertaining. Another reason why “No more curtain calls for elephants” is because in the article it states, they use a “bullhook” if they are not doing what they want them to do. This shows how the animals at zoos and circuses are not treated in a fair way. On the other hand, I also agree with “Why elephants need circuses and zoos” Because it states in the last paragraph, “Elephants need people to care for them in captivity and to protect and conserve them in their range lands.” Although I agree with both, the people who “care” for them are abusive and rude to the animals. In conclusion, elephants should not be in zoos or circuses.

I agree with the claim of "No More Curtain Calls For Elephants". The elephants are being mistreated and put in the wrong environment. Elephants are being what I would say tortured by the bull-hook to be trained. They are, when in their pens for the night, being exposed to concrete, causing arthritis, cracked toenails, and even foot disease. I say elephants are best to be left alone in the wild so they can live their ow happy elephant lives.

Elephants should not be in Zoos or Circuses because the harsh enviroment puts a lot of stress on the elephants. These animals are big they need space, like there natural enviroments. Standing on hard surfaces for hours causes arthritis, cracked toenails and even foot disease. I dont really like going infront of thousands of people being taken a picture of 24/7. Animals have feelings too if you want people to see elephants you should make it comfortable for them and let them do what they can do in there natural habitat. Elephants Have feelings too no more zoos and circuses.

I believe that elephants in fact should NOT be kept in zoos in circuses. In order for them to become tame and trained, it involves harsh conditions, and the bullhook. These harsh environments can lead to them being hurt.

The article that convinces me is the second one, “Why Elephants Need Circuses and Zoos”. In the wild, elephants travel for days looking for water and food, and in zoos and circuses, the are kept full. Poachers kill tons of elephants every year, and in zoos they are safe. The article states that zoos have replicated elephant’s natural habitat, with even extras, like waterfalls. That keeps elephants comfortable and almost at home. Elephants are taught at an early stage how to behave, and not harshly, directly stated from the article, they are taught through a ser
ies of repetition and reward. They are safe and happy in zoos and circuses

  87. I think the better claim was “ Why elephants need circuses and zoos” . I think this because they gave more information about the topic and even though it was shorter it had more evidence to support its side of the claim.
One of the pieces of evidence was “human conflict can lead to injury or death, elephant or human.” Another one was when they said elephant habitats are rapidly disappearing because of homes that the people are building.
Also it says calves are left orphaned and are most likely to die. I do not agree with performing elephants but its better than getting killed in the wild by hunters or of starvation. I do agree with putting animals in the wild and letting them have space to roam. And also that they shouldn't be killed by hunters. This is why I thought this was the better sided. Also, if I was a zoo manager I would rather keep elephants safe other than risking what’s in the wild. In the zoo most deaths are because of old age or sickness.

The article that convinces me the most is No more curtain calls for elephants. This article convinced me for many reasons. No more curtain calls for elephants made me think that elephants should be able to roam in the wild. The article informed me that when elephants are not on stage/display they are put in zoo barns standing on hard surfaces for long periods of time. "For 8000-to-10000- pound creatures who spend all day on their feet and can live into their 40s, the consequence of that confinement was a painful middle age, marked by arthritis, cracked toenails and sore feet." Says No more curtain calls for elephants. Aside from that the elephants were practically abused by a tool called a bullhook, a bullhook resembles a hammer. When elephants were misbehaving the zookeeper would hit the elephant with the bullhook, but today most zoos have banned bullhooks. Though bullhooks have been banned from most zoos they are not banned from circus'. The people who train circus elephants are not gentle, the article states "it requires chaining and the bullhook". Though circus' and zoos say they are caring for the elephant they still chain up the elephants and even use the bullhook! Those are just some reasons that convinced me that elephants should be able to roam free in the wild.

I agree that elephants should be kept in their natural habitat. I think that elephants should be kept in their natural habitat because they have survived like that for thousands of years. No animal should be kept in captivity, they are meant to survive on their own. An elephant is a few ton massive animal, and standing on hard concrete will cause a foot ache. An elephant standing on concrete can cause foot disease and authorities. At least if an elephant is in the wild the will not be used on by a bull hook. A bull hook a sharp weapon used on elephants. In the wild an elephant has unlimited area, soft ground and no bull hook. In all I just think that elephants are not meant to be in captivity and should kept in the wild.

I think the elephants should not be held in circuses and other acts. Elephants toe nails rot and feet get sores and also tend to die early. Also they are other animals in the act that are more interesting. Elephants need to be free and in the sahara. Also being in a train for days standing in a little box is torture. In the book it also says that they tame them not gently but by metal and harsh pointy tips on the metal. I think if they continue keeping elephants they will start losing population. But it is amusing and fun to watch but imagine you having to go through this.

The article No More Curtain Calls for Elephants and Why Elephants Need Circuses and Zoos really made me thought that a lot of creatures in the world are at danger, everywhere.

I think elephants need to be in zoos and circuses. although they were treated poorly those times have passed. They would be much better off in a zoo then in the wild. People need to wake up and see that there is more human interaction in the wild. plus they are able to be killed by poachers there. if they are in a zoo they could be pampered and live a healthy life. they could also find all the resources they need in their zoo. so I have proven that they are far better off in a zoo then in the wild. This concludes and proves my idea about elephants in the zoo or wild.

The article called “No More Curtain Calls For Elephants” convinces me the most. I think elephants should be in the wild. The article is right, usually what happens in zoos is that they use harsh materials on elephants. They also can never provide the exact habitat for an elephant. In the end you should leave elephants in the wild. If you think people should see elephants, than have them go to africa on a safari a safe distance away. Both articles that I read had very good points and arguments. I think I agree more with, “No More Curtain Calls for Elephants”. I think this article convinced me that elephants should not be in circuses because it hurts them. In the article it says, “the consequence of that confinement was a painful middle age, marked my arthritis, cracked toenails, and sore feet.” I think that elephants should not have to be held in captivity and perform for people if it harms them. Another way that the elephants get harmes is how they get trained. In the article it says, “But ‘taming’ is not gentle; it requires chaining and the bullhook (a sharp edged tool that hurts the elephants), and comes at the expense of an elephant’s well-being. Until I read this article, I had no idea that elephants performing actually hurt the elephants. I am glad that people are trying to make the elephant's habitat more like the wild. I hope that people create a better environment for the circus elephants and I hope all of the elephants get used for their actual purpose, while not being harmed.

I think there should not be a minimum age on video games. They just need some sort of cap on them. I agree that some teens can get taken too far, but, If the game for their parents shut off the game every 1 ½ hr. or so there would be no problem. Video games can be helpful for learning and other various skills, why would we put a cap on learning? All the gaming mishaps have been because of people that could not stop gaming, This is why a short break every now and then could prevent gamer deaths and mishaps. As long as gamer and people alike take breaks and get hydrated with some physical fitness I see no reason to put a minimum age on Video games. As from the article, “ Remember to eat, get up, move around every once and awhile, and get some sleep.” this shows there doesn't need to be an age minimum on video games just take a few breaks.

In the article “Teen Hospitalized after a Four day Video Gaming Binge” Fifteen year old Tyler Rigsby played 4 days straight Call of Duty: Modern Warfare,
with little water, sleep, or food. He had serious dehydration and passed out. He was sent to the local hospital and was lucky to survive. This shows how dangerous video games can be. The can be played every once in awhile, but no more than over two or three hours straight. Video games played too much can cause your neural system to stop firing, dehydration, death, blood clots, and more. When I realized playing video games cause these problems and more global, I was surprised. I never would have thought it could cause so much damage to your health, and maybe even kill you. The problem with over-playing video games isn’t just teens though, it’s adults too. In the article, it explains; “In 2010, a British mother was banned from the internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds.”

The problem with overplaying video games has gotten very serious, and should be stopped. You should know when you need to stop, get some sleep, get some water, food, or just plain stop because you’ve been sitting too long.

I think that elephants should have circuses and zoos because elephants are more endangered in the wild. Elephants are one of the most fascinating animals in the world and no one wants them to die. Well they won't die if they are in zoos. All animals in zoos are specially taken care of. A lot of people don't want elephants in circuses and zoos because they are afraid animals are being hurt by a tool called a bull-whip. Yes these tools are used at the zoo, but it is only to discipline them. When you think about it, would you rather be whipped a few times in your life, or die?! I'd rather the whip. Elephants need protection, or they could get extinct! People need to realize that these animals are endangered, and are rapidly disappearing. Elephants need to be put in zoos and circuses so that theyy can get taken care of.

While elephants in circuses and zoos don’t have to face threats of poachers, droughts, etc., it’s better for them to be in their natural habitat. One defense for why elephants should be left in their natural habitat is that they roam many miles a day. In circuses, they are chained up, and in zoes, they have few acres of land, and chained up at night. This will result in arthritis, sore feet, and/or cracked toe nails. Los Angeles Zoo had an idea, and put it to action. They spent more than $40 million expanding the elephants habitat, and adding features like waterfalls, logs, trees, dirt, and grass. They even stopped chaining them up. But their habitat was not like the real wild. They only had a few acres, not many miles. Also, not all zoos like Los ANgeles have all that money and time to expand the zoos. There is only a couple downsides to the new improvements added in zoos, but what about circuses?

Circuses have to chain up elephants, and use a bullhook. A bullhook is a tool with “one blunt end and a sharp hook on the other, it resembles a hammer. Keepers use it to poke, prod or strike.” according to ‘No More Curtain Calls for Elephants’ They use the bullhook to train and punish the elephants.

Also, changes aren’t progressing as much in elephants interactions with humans. In the previously mentioned article, it explains, “That concept is tangled in a history of pachyderms depicted as brave warriors in battle, stately beasts of burden and hardy workers, hauling lumber in Asia, ferrying tourists in Thailand and carrying visitors at county fairs in the United States.” Elephants are not meant to be treated this way, they are not meant to, unlike horses, be domesticated animals and carry around lumber and people. For elephants to be able to perform these tasks, it takes taming. “But ‘tamming’ is not gentle; it requires chaining and the bullhook (as described earlier) , and comes at the expense of elephants well being.” again, from ‘No More Curtain Calls for Elephants’.

Overall, elephants should not be in zoos or circuses. It’s a concern for the possibilities of: Arthritis, well-being, broken toenails, comunication/conection with humans, etc.. This is why elephants belong in their natural habitat. With maybe a help or two from humans, it would be best for them to live in the wild. Zoos and circuses should say good-bye to elephants, for the elephants sake.

Bullhooks are poles with one dull side and one hook on the other. Zoos have been forcing elephants to stay cooped up in tiny pens as well as to stand on concrete causing . The article from before says that “the consequences of that confinement was a painful middle age, marked by arthritis, cracked toenails, and sore feet.” All of these make it hard on the elephants to stay calm and live in zoos peacefully. While out in the wild they have a higher chance despite the poachers, villages in their migration route. Humans have built villages in the middle of the elephants migration route often causing “human-elephant conflict sometimes leads to deaths-- of both elephants and humans.”

From Why Elephants Need Circuses and Zoos, “The "wild" left for these magnificent animals is rapidly disappearing.” That is why they need their own habitats at the zoo.
