“18-Foot-Long Sea Creature Found off California Coast”

I learned that there is these big fish called oarfish. Oarfish live at 3,000 feet below the surface. People know very little about these "serpents". It is a little strange that two of them have showed up though.
ReplyDeleteThis story is definitely worth reporting on. People need to know about these weird fish. From the looks of it they could eat you! If people know about this then you can more careful where you dive, and how far you dive.
I learned that oarfish can dive up to 3,000 feet deep also that the fishes most likely are long. The oarfish can grow up to 50 feet long its also the longest bony fish in the world and this oarfish was 18 feet long.
DeleteI think this story is worth reporting because maybe in the future kids would learn about this on a test and maybe ask what's the longest fish named, and because this is a very interesting fact about fish for people especially for people that love fishes because they get to learn more about what they like and for other people it might get to go out there and search for other things like that
I am confused. Daniel, did you comment on your own blog post? Also, I am thinking that these fish have a habitat that divers can't reach without very specialized equipment. They live too deep beneath the water.

I found the article very interesting. I thought it was amazing how they discovered 2 oarfish in one week. Before I even read the article I did not know they even existed. If I was the one who found the 18 ft. long fish in the water 24 miles from land, I would be freaking out! Overall I learned about a new creature that I have never even heard of before called a oarfish. I also learned that these fish were very uncommon because they like to stay in deep waters which leads to me wondering if these creatures are slowly going extinct?
To answer the second question I think that the story about the oarfish was definitely worth some attention. They basically found a legend and two of them! I really want to learn more about the oarfish and why they are dying. I know they say they are dying of natural causes but maybe there is another factor like starvation and I am sure other people would agree because what is the possibility of two oarfish popping up in two weeks?
You bring up a good point about starvation. I didn't think about this. Perhaps something is happening to their food supply...hmmm?

ReplyDeleteBy reading this article I learned that the oarfish can grow to be fifty feet long or bigger! I also learned that oarfish are very rare. I think this story was worth reporting on. It was worth reporting on because it was very interesting to learn about the oarfish because I have never heard of it before.
In the second article I learned that the oarfish is so long someone mistook it for a whale. Yes I think this article was worth reporting on. It is worth reporting on because they found two oarfish in one week when its very rare to only find one. Though it is a big deal that they found two oarfish in one week the article seemed too short, and it did not give much information.
The second article was short, but I think it gave some information that the first article did not. I also think if you were to think more critically about the Oarfish articles, you might consider the significance of this rare occurrence. Why would two of these fish suddenly appear?

First article: 18-Foot-Long Sea Creature Found off California Coast.
I learned that there are still creatures in our oceans that we have not studied yet or not even found. I also learned that oar fish are washing up on shore that are around 13-18 feet long. I do think that this story was well worth reporting on because now other people know that we really are finding out more about our own world every day and this article proves it. With the release of this article now other scientists can collaborate to find out more about the washed up creature.
Second article: Oarfish Washes up in Oceanside.
I learned later that another oarfish washed up on a shore. This fish was about 13 feet long and was also to undergo testing. Although this one was found by common folk not a marine scientist hopefully both test will give some answers. I do think this article was worth reporting on because yet another large oarfish was found around the same time. This can help both researchers see both stories and figure if this was just luck or was there a connection between the two creatures. The public can also see what i going on in the world today discoveries wise.
Yes, I think it is important to learn about new discoveries and new species, but I also think there may be a larger more significant story here.

Article #1:
What I learned from this article is these sea creatures " dive more than 3,000 feet deep and are rare and largely unstudied."
I think this article was worth reporting because in the article it states,"sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied, according to CIMI." SO since these creatures are rare now the public finally gets a chance to see these unique creatures.
Article #2:
What I learned from this article is that this was the second time in a week that an oarfish surfaced Southern California.
I think that this article was worth reporting as well because maybe having two of the same kind of fish wash up on shore in one week, could potentially lead to finding more oarfish in the Southern California waters.
And, why would these two fish washing up on shore be significant?
DeleteArticle #1
ReplyDeleteI learned that oar fishes can be very large but, people don't usually see them because they are 3,000 ft. under water. I thought that this article was not worth reporting on because there are many different types of fish that people have not yet discovered. Every time there is a new, odd, or different looking fish doesn't mean they have to take it out of its natural habitat and be examined by people.
Article #2
I learned that it was the second time that a oar fish that big washed up on shore. I think that this article was worth reporting on because it was the second time it happened in the week and the same place. This was worth reporting on because unlike the first article, this article actually has a point. It is telling the reader that this has happened before in the same week. It is informing the reader that it might become a common thing or something is wrong.
I think your last three words are very important, "something is wrong". Could there be something environmental? Weather related? Hmmmm?

I learned that oarfish are rare and experts called them a sight of a life time. They usually dive more than 3000 feet deep. That the last one they found was only three feet long. But the newest one they found was eighteen.
I think that this story was worth reporting on because most people won't see the oarfish. So if someone reports on it they may feel happy seeing what the may never see. This topic is cool most people would be interested in the topic of oarfish.
It is an interesting discovery. However, I think you needed to think a bit more critically about the article.

ReplyDeleteI learned that oar-fish are very rare to find but in these two articles they discovered two in one week and they are being taken to study so we know what we are dealing with.
Yes i do think this was worth reporting on because this is a very rare creature we have found very little ones maybe like 3 feet or less but the first one was 8 times the size because it was 18 feet. I mean this is a cool thing to find if they would have not reported this I would have never known these cool mysterious creatures have ever excisted.
I agree that this is a very cool discovery, but I think there is more to it. Why would two of these rare fish suddenly be found dead? Does their appearance indicate something might be wrong?

In the article that I read I learned that people have found an oarfish that is 18 feet long. This shocking to people because people don't usually see this and it is rare to see an oarfish 18 feet long. It is so rare because oarfish are usually 3,000 feet below the water.
One thing that I learned from this article is that an oarfish can be 50 feet long. I think this story was worth reporting on it because they talk about a fish that is 18 feet long and its very interesting.
It is very interesting, but I think there may be more to this discovery if you think a little more about it.

I learned that oarfish can grow up to fifty feet, and dive down over 3,000 feet, so they are not seen or studied very often.. And some people think that oarfish may be the cause of sea serpent legends throughout history. I think this was worth reporting. When two oarfish appear in California within a week, most likely something is going on. Especially when, according to one of the articles, the last oarfish they saw was 3 feet long and these two are 13 1/2 and 18 feet long.
I agree with you. The size of the Oarfish must mean they are very old. Why would these fish suddenly appear within days of each other?
DeleteI learned that oarfish are fish that are rarely ever seen, because they can swim as deep as three thousand feet under the water's surface for this reason they are rarely ever seen as you can imagine. I also learned that the length of 18 feet for an oarfish is not unusual but it is very unusual to see one this long! I think that these stories were definitely worth reporting on, because the fact that there were two oarfish spotted within the same week is very unusual. I think that because these stories were reported, scientists will be or have been doing a lot of research.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! I think finding these two fish in such a small time frame means something bigger. I think scientist will research and find out that there may be something going on in the environment.

This was really worth it because I learned a lot and I hope other people become aware of this and post more articles. I hope more creatures like this can be discovered in the future.

A 14 ft Oar fish was found washed up off the coast of California. People discuss whether this deep sea fish was coming in shallow because it just wanted some protein or if it was sensing tectonic activity. After found off the coast it was dissected and found to be perfectly healthy. So the most likely reason was that it was just coming in shallow for food.
When I saw the video, I was amazed because it was a video showing a 14 ft sea monster. The Oar Fish is a really amazing fish and it looks a lot like a sea serpent. It also surprises me that it was swimming around in places where other people are swimming.
Hmmm? Tectonic activity? I wonder if their appearance was a warning that something weather related (storm) was going to happen?

I learned that the oarfish is a rarely seen fish that lives 3,000 feet below in the ocean. Since it was so rare it was weird that 2 of them showed up in the same week. The oarfish that were found, one was 13ft and the other 18ft. The oarfish although can grow up to 50ft! The people were amazed that the sea serpent that they thought was only a fairy tale, is real.
I do think this story is worth reporting. Since the oarfish lives 3,000 feet below sea level they are hardly ever seen, but in the last week, two appear dead, in California. This is very interesting because what is making them die near the coast of California.
My thought exactly! What caused to rarely seen fish to appear? Could there be something wrong in the environment?

For the second week a rare oarfish has wounded up on Southern California on Friday on Oceanside Harbor. I learned that an oarfish can grow to more than 50 feet long. Employees called this the discovery of a lifetime, they say sightings are rare because oarfish can dive at 3,000 ft deep. The oarfish have seemed to died of natural causes.
This was worth reading because we learned a lot and how and why it happened. I think this was good because this article can make people aware of what has happened in other places and what is going on is in other places. I hope that scientist will experiment more on this and hope they figure out more about this.
I think the appearance of these two fish means something "big". Perhaps it is an indicator of "things" going on in the depths of the ocean...hmmm?

Article number 1, “18-Foot-Long Sea Creature Found off California Coast."
Article number 2, “Oarfish Washes up in Oceanside."
In these articles I learned many facts about the Oarfish. I learned that Oarfish are very rare, because they are deep sea swimmers. The articles both stated that most of the Oarfish are living at about 3,000 feet below water, so most humans can't find them that easily. Also, I learned that Oarfish can be 50 feet long or longer! Next, I learned what the scientists are going to do to the 18 foot Oarfish they found. In the article, “18-Foot-Long Sea Creature Found off California Coast", it said that scientists are going to bury the fish to let it decompose. After all of the fish has disintegrated, scientists are going to take the skeleton to study it further. I thought this was very cool. After hearing all of this information, I would definitely report about this if I came across an Oarfish. If I found one alive or dead I would definitely make an article about it. Any information about these rare creatures would help, even if it was just a little part about the fish. But I think I would be really creeped out if I came across a fifty foot long sea monster.
I would be a bit scared to see a fish this large, too. They are not friendly looking! Do you think that finding these two fish within days of each other may mean something? Could it be an indicator of something that is happening under the sea?

On October 13th in los angeles a science instructor that was snorkeling spotted an 18 foot serpin like oarfish. The fish took 15 people to drag out of the water. they said the last oarfish that they saw was 3 feet long. The fish dives 3,000 feet deep into the ocean so no one ever can see the fish. When i saw the video i almost threw up it was nasty, I wasn't even sure if it was dead or alive. The fishes face was all mushed up. I was surprised at how long it was but it was just wierd.

The article also made me think of how these rear fish that dive 3000 feet under the ocean got found up on the coast of California Beaches and not only one but multiple ones and they all say they died because of natural reasons. This made me think if they did die because of natural reasons.
I think the story wasn't worth reading because it didn't teach me much.

the articles didn't tell much info on the creatures so i didn't learn that much from the article. the creature at its biggest is 50 feet long and lives 3000 feet under the sea so we don't have much research on it.this article was not worth reading because it just told you what the a creature was called and that it. the article also told a little bit about the fishes natural habitat and it usually dies of natural causes because not many things can go that deep without dying.
First, you need to edit your work. Before you post a comment, you should read it over and look for silly errors. A post on the blog should be your best writing! Also, I think you needed to dig a bit deeper into the article. Think a more critically on this topic!

ReplyDeleteThe article that I read was “18-foot-long Sea Creature Found Off Calif. Coast”. The article is about Jasmine Santana, a marine science instructor who was snorkeling off the Southern California coast when she looked at the sea-floor and saw the carcass of an 18 foot long silver Oarfish. When she went back to shore to tell people of the news, she needed 15 helpers to drag the Oarfish to shore. The eyes of the Oarfish are the size of half-dollars. People called it the discovery of a lifetime. Mark Waddington, a senior captain of the Tole Mour, a CIMI’s sail training ship said, “We’ve never seen a fish this big, the last Oarfish we saw was three feet long.”. Since the creatures can dive down almost 3,000 feet deep, the sightings of the creatures are rare and are not studied very often. Scientists say that the Oafish died of natural causes. The fish was on display for 5th, 6th, and 7th graders studying at the CIMI for one day. According to CIMI, the Oarfish can grow up to be 50 feet in length, and it is supposedly the longest bony fish in the world.

ReplyDeleteA wild oarfish washes up on shore! A oar fish are what you can say rare to people. An Oar fish can grow up to 50 feet long or 75 feet long. This is the second oar fish to wash up on shore in a week on the sunny beaches of California. Many busy swimmers found this fish in the ocean near shore. The people who found it called the police and the police called Seaworld in San Diego to see what they can do. They measured the gargantuan fish , and it was 13 and a half feet long. This was a small one though it sounds big but a fully grown one can be measured up to 50 feet long. Scientist took some tissues to see what it exactly is they found good information. This fish has been known throughout history and for some people just swimming around and find this that is amazing.

These articles taught the reader about an amazing new discovery. Two 18-foot long oarfish washed up on shores in Southern California. One of them was on the South California Coast, and one was at Oceanside Harbor. The creature was so big that 15 people were needed to carry it off the shore. This is an amazing discovery because oarfish normally live 3,000 feet deep in the ocean and can grow to be about fifty feet long. This fish was said to have died of natural causes within the ocean. Scientists have taken tissue samples to study the mysterious creature. I think this is a story worth reporting because it is a discovery of possibly a new species. People should be aware of these creatures now that two have washed up in South Carolina in a week. I would be scared to go on a beach if I knew that this creature was coming my way. It was a good thing that this story was reported for fascination, but also for awareness and caution. Nobody knows yet if these creatures are harmful or not.
I like the point you made about awareness and caution. I was thinking caution a bit differently. I'm thinking this discovery of two rare fish may mean there is a bigger problem.

The article "18-foot-long sea creature found off Calif. coast" said that the Oarfish has eyes the size of half-dollars. I learn from this article is that oral fish had died from natural causes,I also learned that Oral fish swim 3,000 feet deep. The Person who found the fish said she had to drag it to the shore or nobody will believe her how big the fish was.The oral fish they found will be barid in the sand and then the skeleton will on for display.I learned from this article that oral fish can grown more than 50 feet.
I think this Story is worth doing a report on because There's not many oral fish and they may become instinct and we don’t know yet if there are any more oral fish that size on earth this story will be part of history. I learned many characteristics about the mythical creatures known as oarfish. First, I had no idea what an oarfish was. This was the first time I had heard of such a beast. I thought it was amazing that oarfish could grow up to fifty feet long! I now realized why not many people know what oarfish are. They are rarely seen because they roam 3,000 feet underwater. Very few people have ever seen them, therefore not many know about oarfish. I can see though why people can envision oarfish being the reason the sea monster legends sprung up around the world. The giant monster is long and scaly, just like the serpent legends have it. It is really cool to learn about oarfish.
I do think that this story was worth reporting on for many reasons. One, it can spark many people’s interests to learn about oarfish. Since very few people know about oarfish, this discovery could grasp the attention of people all around the world, and make them curious to learn about this new species of sea creatures that has just been introduced to them. My second reason is that it could help scientists make brand new discoveries. Scientists could find some chemicals on the oarfish that could make a difference in the medical field, or they could discover a new species. There are so many positive things that could happen because this story was reported.
I agree that there are many positive discoveries that could be made. I am also thinking that finding these rare fish may mean that there are bigger problems in the depths of the ocean. I wonder if they are an indicator of some larger problem?

“18-foot-long sea creature found off Calif. coast”, by Christopher Weber, tells about an science instructor who discovered a eighteen foot oarfish while snorkeling. The article had been written to entertain rather than inform so it did not show that many facts about oarfish. However, I have learned that they are deep sea swimmers. I also learned that oarfish can grow up to fifty feet and are at the root of many sea serpent myths throughout history. After reading the article, I feel that although the article may be interesting to some readers, it is not particularly important to report. It may create an air of humor and amazement, but there are many more important things that should be recognized. The article is great for entertainment but not ideal for statistical information.
I think if you really think about this article, there is more to it then meets the eye. Why would two rare fish suddenly appear on the coast within a few days of each other? Could there be something wrong with their habitat?
DeleteFrom this article I learned that two rare “serpents” (they’re actually oarfish) were found in California, in Los Angeles and Oceanside Harbor in Southern California. I learned that for the first article the oarfish is 18 feet long. That’s really long for a fish, I thought as soon as I read the article. The other fish in the other article is 13 1/2 feet long. Compared to the other fish it is smaller, but 13 feet for a fish is long.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that they were all in California, so I also learned that they are actually rare for a oarfish to appear in California. I thought that this was worth reporting, why you ask? It is because this fish can be evidence for scientists and maybe find out their ancestors and find out more information about creatures in the past. I also think that this was well worth reporting because this can also teach people that there are many other creatures in the world and may have a weird appearance.
I really liked your first sentence. It definitely got my attention by using the word "serpents". You are correct in thinking we can learn a lot of facts from this discovery. I was also thinking about why would two rare fish suddenly appear dead on the beach within a few days of each other? What is going on in deep in the ocean?

In this article I learned about an oarfish that washed up on a shoar in California. It was measured to be about 18 feet long. The last fish found was only 3 feet long. These fish are rarely seen since it dives to more than 3,000 feet below sea level. I also learned that it was the biggest oarfish that people have found. That leads me to think that there could be even bigger fish of this kind. This article was worth reporting on because it interests me how big fish really are and all of the creatures we still have to discover.
You need to think a bit more critically about the article. Why is finding these two rare fish dead on a beach important? What is the significance?

An Oarfish was found in California. The creature was big, a size of 13 and a 1/2 was measured. This creature is rarely found as it swims 3,000 ft underwater. 2 days later another Oarfish was found. The article I picked was ''18-foot-long Sea Creature Found off Calif. Coast'', by Susan Shroder. Some facts I learned from the article is that a creature named Oarfish was found by a snorkeler in California. This creature was never really studied because it lives so deep in the ocean, and some people haven't really heard or seen this creature before. Oarfish dive 3,000 deep in the ocean, a reason why people have never spotted this creature. Another fact I learned was that the Oarfish died of natural causes and not by humans when it was spotted. "We've never seen a fish this big," said Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship. This shows that this creature was a big discovery for people.
I think this article was worth reporting because it tells us that there could be animals in the ocean we never knew about. People could also want to study more about the Oarfish now that they know about it. Scientist probably got excited by the news of the Oarfish, and would want to study more about it. Like I said there is a new creature to learn about, and maybe more!
I agree this is an exciting discovery! I like how you supported this with a quote from the text.

ReplyDeleteIn this article, I learned a couple things and I have a couple questions about what I read as well. First, I read the article about the Eighteen Foot Long Sea Creature Found in San Diego. This title surprised me because I have never heard of or seen a fish this big. This fish was so big that In the article it said that the woman who found it thought it was a baby whale at first glance. One thing that really jumped out at me in the article was the statistic that oarfish can grow from 50 to 75 feet. I was blown away by this for I know some whales are this big. But this was such a historic find because oarfish are usually 3,000 feet deep in the water. The only reason this oarfish was found in shallow waters is because it died of natural causes. I have a question though. My question is, is this a coincidence that two oarfish were found in the same week, or will we be seeing for of these events. I think this was a article worth reporting.
I am not clear on your question. Did you mean will we be seeing more of these events?

I thought the first article we read was very interesting. I thought this article was interesting because, I had never heard of an oarfish before. I also thought that it was kind of weird that the oarfish were dying. What was the cause for this death. I found it interesting that the oarfish are 18 feet long, because most animals don't grow to be that big. I learned that oarfish swim on the bottom of the ocean floor, and thats why they're rarely spotted. I definitely thought this was worth reporting because, I had never heard of a oarfish before, and I doubt many other people have too.
The second article I found a lot less interesting than the first article. I think that it gave a few key facts, but it would have been nice if they added some details in to help the reader understand the subject more. I learned that 50-75 people gathered to see the huge creature. I thought this would be a cool scene to be able to see in real life. I don’t really think that this article was worth reporting because I feel like they didn't give enough information.
So, overall it seems you thought the two articles had interesting facts and worth reading. Did you consider what the discovery of these two rare fish may mean to science? Why did two fish suddenly appear dead?

I think that finding this sea creature is a little bit scary because of its size and it's resemblance to a snake. Most people probably are afraid of snakes or they just don't like them. To know that there is something in the ocean that looks just like a snake would make me feel very uncomfortable. I think that the thing that scares me most is the fact that to me, it looks like the basilisk from "Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets"! And the thing in that movie is SCARY! I have never been in the ocean and I am already afraid of sharks and to know that there is another terrifying creature just scares me. Overall I think that the article was very interesting and I think that it would be cool to learn more about this fish.

The thought of this makes me wonder what other kinds of animals could be out there. Are there any that are any larger? I am not certain, but I have defiantly learned something today.
I think that these were definitely worth reporting on. Not many people know about the oarfish, so I think that they would get a kick out of this article. Also, it is very odd that 2 of these ginormous fish washed up less then 2 weeks apart. This is very uncommon.
You made two very good points. It was an interesting article about an uncommon species, and why did this happen?

I have learned from this article that oar-fish are fish that are rare to find because they only swim in deep waters about 3,000 feet down. Before this article I had not known about Oar-fish. After I read these articles I feel like I have learned so much about the Oar-fish. Like how I learned that the oar-fish can grow up to 18 feet long. I have also started to wonder why there have been Oar-fish washing up on the shore so often. I wonder if this has ever happened before? I also wonder if they only appear in the California region?
I do think that this story is worth writing a report about because i'm sure there are many people like me out there who do not know about oar-fish. Oar-fish should be heard about.
I think there are a lot of people are there wondering exactly the same thing as you. Why did these rare fish get beached in California? Why two within a couple of days? What is the significance?

ReplyDeleteArticle 1 18 foot long sea creature found off California's coast
What I learned was that there is such thing as an Oarfish and that they can grow up to 50 feet long! I also learned that many Sea serpent tales are based on this thing. I think this story was very much worth reporting on because, this rare fish is found dead off the shoreline of a beach in California. Also no one knows why it died or why it beached in California.
Article 2 Oarfish washes up on a beach in California. What I learned from this article is that more than 1 of these giant Oarfish are washing up in California. I think this is worth reporting because This is the second time a Oarfish has been beached and found dead. Also worth reporting that these fish are supposedly rare and within the span of 2 days 2 different fish are found dead in California. My question is why are they appearing dead so much in California if they are so rare?
Alex, you bring a very important question to our attention! I wonder the same thing!

I learned that the Oarfish actually existed. I have never heard of it before. I also learned that before these carcasses were found, the last carcass found/studied was only three feet long. They were found in Southern California.
I think this story wa sworth reporting because the article even said that they live deep under the ocean (3000 feet about) so they can't really study them much. Also because of the drastic length change. It's great that they found two to look into and observe.
I agree that these two fish will be valuable for further study, but think a bit more critically about this story. Why is finding two of these Oarfish so rare? What is the significance?

In this article, there was a giant fish that measured 18 feet and it was washed up in Southern California on a beach. It says the eyes were half dollar sizes. They are usually found over 3,000 feet deep and they are very rare sighting. What I learned was that an oarfish washed up in Southern California and where they are usually sighted and how often they are seen. I think this story wasn't worth reporting on because people don’t think this is important because it doesn't affect them.
But, I disagree! I think this article does impact us because finding two of these huge fish seems odd. Why did they surface from 3,000 feet below the oceans surface? What is going on in the depths that made this happen?

18-Foot-Long Sea Creature Found off California Coast
In this article it talks about a 18 foot oar fish. I learned from this article that a huge oar fish was brought up to the southern California shore. The person that found this was 30 feet deep and snorkeling when he found this oar fish this is unusual because they can dive up to 3,000 feet deep. This fish is on display until they bury him and wait for him to decompose so they can put it on display.
Oarfish Washes up in Oceanside
What I learned in this article was that a 13 1/2 foot oar fish washed up to the southern California shore. This happened a couple days after a 13 foot oar fish was brought to the shore. I think that both of these articles were worth reporting.
You needed to elaborate a bit more on why you thought the story was worth reporting.

I learned that oarfish are rare. They do not usually come to the surface and they usually swim about 3,000 feet deep. That is why it was so unusual to find an oarfish on the surface. I thought it was interesting that oarfish can grow to be 50 feet long. An oarfish is one of the bony fishes in the world. Another interesting thing that I learned about oarfish was that they might have started the sea serpent legends. Now whenever I think I see a sea serpent, I will know that it is probably an oarfish.
I do not think this article was worth reporting on because it is not really important to our everyday lives. It will not affect us as people. I would be just fine if I did not know about this article. I think it is kind of interesting, but not that important. Maybe it would be more important to a sailor or a marine biologist but not to a 12 year old girl who hates the ocean and fish.
I think you missed the "big" picture here. Why would find two of these rarely seen fish in the same week be important? Is there something going on environmentally? Hmm....? I think there is a bigger story here.

Article #1:
From this article, I learned that the oarfish is thought to be the foundation of many myths and legends. I found this very interesting because there is an explanation for these long, forgotten stories. I also think this article was worth reporting on because it showed us valuable information. It included brilliant facts such as that the fish was 18 ft. long, and some students from CIMI got to examine it.
Article #2:
In this article, I learned some new things about a different oarfish, This oarfish was only 13 ft. long, but it was still discovered on the same beach. Also, I learned that oarfish can grow to 50 ft. long, yowzah! I think this article was not worth reporting on because it was on the same topic. The first article had better info on that fish, and they should’ve combined each of them together,
I think both articles are important to understanding why finding these fish are important. What does find two of these rare species in the same week mean? Is there something going on deep int the ocean?

There are two things that I learned from these two articles. The first thing that I learned is that oarfish exist. I also learned that oarfish are eighteen feet long. I was shocked when I saw that picture of an oarfish washed up on shore!
Also, when I read these articles, I was saying to myself, why do we need to know about these fish. I think this story was not worth reporting. I feel that it was not important enough to report. I think that not a lot of people would read this article on there own. They would see these titles and think that the articles itself might be boring. When you write an article, you want to write something that people will love to read. I do not think that people will want to read this article and that the article is not important enough to report.
Shocked is a good way to describe my first reaction to seeing the pic of the Oarfish, too. But, I disagree with you about the importance of this article. I think finding two of these fish in the same week means something. It made me question what is going on in the environment...hmmm?

I learned from these two articles that oarfish can grow more than 50 feet long. However, oarfish can dive as far down as 3,000 feet under sea level. Luckily, the oarfish was found 30 feet under the water and was found by a marine scientist instructor. He happened to be snorkeling and spotted something sparkling in the water. So far, it is the longest oarfish found.
This story was worth reporting because scientist were able to learn more about oarfish from the tissue of the one found in the water. Not only did they learn more about the oarfish, but they also had an experience that may lead to further expeditions beneath sea level to learn more about new species.
You are right that scientist will learn more about this species. Do you think the discovery of these two fish in the same week signifies anything else?

There are many thing that I have learned while reading these articles. First of all, I had never knew that there were serpent-like fish called oarfish. In addition, I never knew that they could grow to be over 50 feet. However, in most cases, the fish would only be 3 feet when washed up in the shore. This is mostly because they live 3000 feet underwater and are rarely found. Even though there are many interesting facts about the finding of the oarfish, I do not think that it is worth reporting. There are many other events going on in the world that are much more important than a minor finding of a long oarfish. Not many people would bother to read an article so they could find out about trivial things.

I do not think this article was very important though. This article gives us a few facts about the Oar fish. But this is not going to change the way we live or operate things. It was worth reporting on because it is interesting to find and learn about an oarfish that was found along the coast that was measured 18 feet long. It is also cool to learn about it because an oar fish can dive up to 3,000 feet long so finding one 30 feet under the sea was pretty rare and lucky.

I learned that these oar fish are rare and that the last oar fish scientists studied was 3 feet long. It makes me wonder if there is something much bigger out there that we do not know of. Oar fish live deep deep in the sea that's why we don't usually see these amazing creatures.
Also, I think that this article was definitely worth reporting because it's an interesting article. People should know about it I mean it's cool to think of or wonder what do we not know of that lives in the deep deep, pitch black ocean.

I learned many things by reading this article. One thing that I learned was that an oar-fish can to be more than 50 feet long. I also learned that the oar-fish dove more than 3,000 feet deep and that sightings of these creatures are very rare. I think that this article was worthy of being reported because it is very rare to see an animal like this. Also many of the employees of the institute said it was “A discovery of a lifetime”. Also the creature can be very fascinating to many people. Also it’s very interesting to see a creature this big and the employees said it was very hard to move the animal they needed more than 15 people to help bring the creature to shore.Overall think it was worthy to report on this creature.
I like that you included the fact that fifteen people were needed to get the fish to shore. That is really unbelievable! It demonstrates how big the fish were and how heavy!

What I learned from these two articles is that this oarfish was the first ever seen that was 18-feet-long, people have only seen an oarfish as big as three-feet-long. Also, oarfish are rare, they dive more than 3,000 feet deep and aren't studied on very much. Oarfishes can grow to more than 50 feet. They are a deep-water pelagic fish, the longest bony fish in the world.
I do not think that these articles are worth reporting on because it’s not really something that reflects on everyone, it’s just something that people can read for entertainment. But, like I said before, this isn't something that everyone needs to know because these articles aren't important in our daily lives.
I think you need to think more critically about these two fish being discovered dead on the beach. Why would two fish rarely seen suddenly appear dead on the beach? Could this be a signal of a bigger problem?

Have you ever imagined a fish that could be taller than you? Well, if you had this fish made a fantasy come true. The oar fish. But anyways, the articles said that this sea creature lives 3,000 feet below sea level and dies of natural causes. Can you imagine if it gets bigger? Well you should because this fish also grows to be 50 feet long. That's even bigger! Have you ever went on the giant drop at great america? its about half that size. (the fish not the ride :) ) The fish could probably provide food for weeks if not months! These articles really inspired me to read more and find more articles. I learned in this article that a type of fish called an Oarfish washed up on shore in California and many researchers. I also learned that a lot of people think that due to this large fish, legends of sea serpents were told in history. This oarfish and oarfish in general are extremely rare because they dive at least 3,000 feet below the surface.
I do think that this article is very much worth reporting on. Things like this do not happen everyday and oarfish are very unstudied. Scientists and researchers can really learn a lot just from discovering a new species or breed of something so I think it was worth reporting on.

In the article “18-Foot-Long Sea Creature Found off California Coast”, I learned that oarfish swim 3,000 feet deep. They are very rare to be seen and most of the ones that people have seen are already dead. The huge fish can grow to be a full size of 50 feet long. Oarfish are most likely the cause of the legends of sea serpents. I think it is important to inform people what these look like so that they don’t freak out. I think that it also can show people that something amazing can happen everyday.
In the article “Oarfish Washes up in Oceanside”, I learned that to see an oarfish is very rare and the oarfish that was found was 13 ½ft. The oarfish was called a discovery of a lifetime. Article #1: The moral I have learned from this article is that an 'oar fish' is ever rarely seen in the eyes of a human for a very long period of time. An oar fish is about almost over 50 feet for an adult size. The one oar fish spotted off the California beach coast in Los Angeles was 18 feet long and was swimming underwater in the beach in 30 feet of water below surface. I can infer that this oar fish is a baby oar fish, because of the masculine size of an adult oar fish compared to the one spotted not to long ago.
I do believe that this article was worth reporting on, for media and other marine scientists to understand that if there were other oar fishes found and brought to the Earths surface long ago in the worlds history and notice that there is more things unique to other studied oar fishes than others oar fishes. I also believe that an oar fish is a great subject to learn about and understand its history on Earth, and why it can help. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/oct/15/18-foot-long-sea-creature-found-off-calif-coast/
Article #2: I have learned from the article ‘Oarfish washes up in oceanside’
that the oarfish is 13 1/2 feet, smaller than the other oarfish that popped up later after this oarfish. I have also learned that the first oar fish’s carcass was cut into 3 different pieces and was placed on display.
I do believe that this oarfish article was worth to be reported on. The article has expressive detail to what the witness out of this eye-popping had done after seeing the carcass of this creature. I also believe that the author had some good description of the type of chain effect from the police telling national scientist groups to other scientist groups.

What did you learn from this article?
I learned that two oar type fish were found in two different parts of California. One was 18 feet long and the other one was 13 1/2 feet long. The very interesting thing about this is that they were found in a two day span and also those types of fish are 3000 feet in the water. So that makes it even more interesting on how people found theses fish.
Do you think this was worth reporting?
Yes, I do. I believe that it was very worth it that they made a report on these fish because now scientists can study these fish and see how life was far down in the sea. Also it was very interesting how each fish will be studied. One was cut into pieces and put into coolers. The other one was buried in the sand and they are going to wait for its skin to naturally decay and then study the bones of the 18 foot long fish
I love how you pointed out how the two different fish will be studied. I agree this was very interesting!

ReplyDeleteI learned that there is a fish that can grow up to fifty feet long. Also that these "oarfish" live down 3,000 in the ocean. That is why this is so rare to see one. Also I think people would want to know about an eighteen foot fish. I think this article was worth reporting on because you just don't see an 18 foot fish everyday. I had a question after reading this article: If these can grow up to fifty feet long, why was an eighteen foot one exciting?
It was cool because this rare event happened two times in a week in southern California. Also that the oarfish were both pretty big, both over ten feet long I think this article was worth reporting on because it tells us that such a rare event just happened twice in one week. I had a question about how both died and why they both ended up in the same place, and will they find more bodies of these fish in the near future?
I loved how you posed questions that were in your mind after reading the two articles. I had similar questions. I wonder if there is something going on deep in the ocean.

From reading this article I have learned a lot about oarfish. I never knew there could be a fish that is 50 feet long! I also I learned that this type of fish lives 3,000 feet deep. It is really interesting to learn about these creatures that look like they are from fairy-tales. I learned that Oar fish are long fish that can grow up to 50ft long. This discovery is very important, because oar fish dive more than 3,000 ft below sea level, so very few are found. The last one found was 3ft.
I think this was definitely worth reporting, because these creatures may explain legends about sea monsters. If something so rare occurs, the public should know about it. I, for example, never knew fish this big with this shape existed! It is also a really cool topic. It can also get people thinking, seeing these cool, but dead creatures.

From the story 18-foot-long Sea Creature Found Off Calif. coast, I learned a marine scientist instructor found this 18 foot long creature. This is so important because it is very unusual to find that long and big of a creature especially under water. Mark Waddington said, “We’ve never seen a fish this big.” This means scientist believe it is a fish. I think this story is worth reporting on because if there is some huge fish out there many new scientist’s or old ones that haven’t heard about the fish that may be interested.
Next I read, Oarfish Washes Up In Oceanside, I learned some people on the beach were walking when they found a shiny creature laying on the beach shore. Just less than a week before there was a 18 foot long fish found in the same area. The fish was found dead and cut into many pieces and transported to Sea World. There scientist’s looked through the remains of the fish to find out more information about it. I think this story is worth reporting because this also happened before in this week and many people will find it interesting that two large fish washed up on shore twice in one week in the same area.
I agree that this is very interesting that two fish would be found in a week period and fish that nobody usually gets to see, but I think there is more to this story. Why would this happen?

They were very lucky when thy had found it, for the last one they saw was 3 feet long. They found out that the 18 foot oar fish died of natural causes. Oar fish can grow up to 50 feet! They spotted the fish 30 feet deep. The fish could be responsible for the serpent legends. They showed the fish to 5th, 6, and 7th graders. I think it was important to report on because it is very interesting and one the longest we have ever seen. Not to mention that they are very rare to see.
Two different Oar fish wash on shore in the same week one is 13 1/2 feet. The other is 18 feet. 50- 75 people came to look at it. I learned that oarfish are fish that are rarely ever seen, because they can swim very deep under water, like deep as three thousand feet under the water's surface. This species of fish may have also caused various stories about sea snakes/creatures. It is also a really cool topic. It can also get people thinking, seeing these cool, but deadly creatures. I hope that you think the same thing about these two articles abut the two weird but cool oafish.
These fish are definitely rarely seen, which does make the fact that we had the opportunity to learn about them very cool. I am wondering why they surfaced? Why did they die?

In the articles they stated that, an Oarfish was washed up on a Californian beach. The Oarfish was about 18 feet long. This Oarfish is very rare to find and there is a limited amount of them in the world. They are so rare to find because they live 3,000 feet under the water. So many people were astonished when they found this discovery. This fish can grow up to be fifty feet long at their prime. This story is definitely worth reporting because scientist are still learning about water creatures and these fish live at depths that scientists can't go down to research them. Its very likely that someone gets really hurt down there, and they might not make it all the way to the surface. I think it would be safer if we research the one we found on the shore and report this article. It is very interesting to all groups ages and you can learn more about these creatures. Overall I think this is a very interesting article and I think people should report this.
I like your point about this being safe way to research this species, but I also think that these two fish surfacing within days of each other means something more...hmmm?

Article #1: I learned that oarfish can grow up to 50 feet or more!! Also, I learned that the giant oarfish can dive down more than 3,000 feet deep. I think this article would be worth reporting on because there are a lot to learn from this article. For example, I learned how the fish was discovered, who helped, and other information about the fish itself.
Article #2: From this article, I learned that the oarfish died from a natural cause and I learned that this happened two times in a week. I think this article would be worth reporting on because it was filled with facts I never knew. For example, I learned how people study these fish and who the researchers were.
On a deeper level, why is this article important to report? Think even deeper! Why do people care about a rare fish being found on a beach? What could this predict? Is there something wrong?

Article#2: In the article, 18-foot-long sea creature found off Calif. coast, I learned that a fish called an oarfish, lives three thousand feet below the surface and can grow up to more than fifty feet. This Oarfish was found washed up along the shore in California. This article honestly does not need to be on the web because it does not really affect anyone and nobody can really relate it unless you have seen a oarfish.
Article#1: In the second article, oarfish washes up in Oceanside, I learned that fro the second time in a week, another oarfish washed up on the shore in Oceanside and someone called the police and complained about a “whale” being washed up. This article was definitely not worth reporting because it did not give enough information about the event.
I don't think you were thinking deeply enough about this article. What could these dead fish mean? Why did a fish that lives so deep in the ocean suddenly surface? And, the fact that two surfaced so closely together? It makes me think that there is something going on that could perhaps impact us. Maybe something with the environment?
DeleteOar fish found in Southern California many times:
ReplyDeleteAshley M.
What I learned in this article was that a marine science instructor found the big fish while snorkeling in Southern California. The fish was 18 feet long and she only found the carcass of the fish. The name of the instructor is Jasmine Santana and the fish she found was called an Oar fish. They said that “ The last Oar fish they found up shore was only 3 feet long, nothing compared to this.” They took the fish and brought to Santa Barbara and put it for display for the 5th,6th, and 7th graders who study at CIMI. The Oar fish can get as long and big as 50 feet. A fish washed up on shore for a 2nd time in a week and it was no ordinary fish, it was an Oar fish again. This Oar-fish is 13 1/2 feet long -- instead of 8 and they found it in the same place as last time in Southern California. A statement one of the people said was that it was “ 1200 block of North Pacific Street, called police about 5 p.m., Oceanside police Officer Mark Bussey said, a caller told the police that he thought it was a whale.” 50 to 75 people were around the Oafish when the police came. I think that this story was worth reporting because usually you do not see these types of fish in the ocean shore and scientists haven’t really discovered or learned enough about them to say their life cycle and or living situation. Also, if they are any danger at all to humans, and if so what level. In All, I feel that this article is super cool and fascinating because I never even knew what that creature was. I am also a big fan of going to Florida and boating, so to know more marine and ocean life is a big help because I find new and astonishing creature when I go into the ocean!
I agree that this discovery is really cool. I had never heard of an Oarfish before reading this article. I wonder what this discovery means? What is happening in the ocean that would cause this rarely seen species to surface dead on the beach?

Article #1
In this article I learned that in Los Angeles and 18 foot oarfish was spotted. 15 people helped drag this creature to shore. This was a rare sighting because these fish dive 3,000 feet deep. This fish died of natural causes. I think this is a storey that is worth reporting because this is a rare to see.
Article #2
I learned from this article that there was a 13 foot or fish that washed up on shore. This is a rare sighting. I also learned that oarfish can get up to 50 feet. I think that this article would be worth reporting because it is so rare to see a oarfish, and it is the second sighting of an oarfish within days of each other.
I agree that the rareness of sighting and Oarfish is an important reason to report the story, but I also feel like there may be a bigger story here. Why did a fish so deep in the ocean surface? Why did it die?

In both articles the author discussed how an oarfish was found dead near the California coast. One was found by Jasmine Santana, while snorkeling on a staff trip, and the other found ashore by regular people on the beach who contacted the police, who then got the NOAA involved. Both groups of people were amazed at each of the creatures they found. The one found by Jasmine Santana was brought to the Catalina Island Marine Institute to be studied. They believe that the creature died of natural causes, but they weren't sure so they decided to take tissue samples and brought them in to study. Everyone was in awe at this humongous fairy-tale like creature-- considering the fact that people barely ever spot them because oarfish dive to nearly 3,000 feet. The sea creature was then put on display for students to examine at the CIMI. Although, the one found washed up on the shore by Oceanside Harbor had a completely different story. Beach-goers found the carcass and contacted the police. The police then informed the NOAA and one of the representatives went and retrieved the fish for study. She measured it to be 13 1/2 feet long, as opposed to the other carcass found in Catalina which measured to be 18 feet long. The 13 1/2 foot carcass was then cut up and put into coolers for later study. Both creatures were said to be a "discovery of a lifetime", and could be helpful for later studies in the future. Overall, I thought both stories were very interesting and were both worth studying. Both articles made me wonder how ironic it was that there were not only one, but two rare oarfish carcasses found during a two day time period. Something must have happened that caused the creatures to die because both supposedly died of natural causes. Maybe it was because of the pollution in the ocean, but until they figure it out, we'll never know. I really liked this story and thought it was very fascinating.
I like your thinking! I wasn't thinking pollution. I was thinking weather related....hmmm?

article #talks about how a 15f t Sea serpent was found on the shores of California.According to the article” Because oafish dive more than 3,000 feet deep, sightings of the creatures are rare and they are largely unstudied, according to CIMI.” So this is a incredible discovery.According to fishermen this is the largest fish he has ever saw..This fisherman did not kill this creature.Actually according to the article”he obscure fish apparently died of natural causes. Also, the fisherman did not find the eel a women named Santana found it while she was snorkeling.According to the article” `I have to drag this thing out of here or nobody will believe me,'".An interesting fact about this eel is”The oarfish, which can grow to more than 50 feet, is a deep-water pelagic fish - the longest bony fish in the world, according to CIM” I think this story is worth reporting because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and shouldn’t be missed. I learned that this fish can grow to be more than 50 feet long and is rare to find because it lives deep in the water
The second article talks about another sea serpent landing on the shore lines of California at Oceanside bay.According to the article”Beachgoers who saw the carcass wash up on the north side of the south Oceanside jetty, off the 1200 block of North Pacific Street, called police about 5 p.m., Oceanside police Officer Mark Bussey said. A caller told police he thought it was a whale.”I do not think this is worth reporting because it is now not that exciting because we have already seen it. #1 I learned that oarfish can grow up to 50 feet and they could POSSIBLY be the cause of sea legends. I think this is worth reporting on because it is rare to see an oarfish especially that long.
#2 I learned that oarfish can dive more than 3,000 feet deep. I don’t really think this one should have been reported, because the article “Oarfish washes up in Oceanside” has barely had any information in it. The information it does have I learned almost all of it in the last one.
There was some different information in each article, but I do agree there were some similarities. You needed to respond to the the question about whether or not this story was worth reporting.

Article #1: What I learned from reading this article is about these people discovering an Oarfish that is really large. The text that says from the article describing the article here says “A marine science instructor snorkeling off the Southern California coast spotted something out of a fantasy novel: the silvery carcass of an 18-foot-long, serpent-like oarfish.” The article mostly talks about the interesting things about this Oarfish, and how the scientists were so amazed from this Oarfish they found. The people who found this Oarfish is Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute and 15 helpers and they dragged the giant sea creature with eyes the size of half dollars to shore on Sunday. This was the biggest fish that the people saw. The text from the article says describing the Oarfish, “The oarfish, which can grow to more than 50 feet, is a deep-water pelagic fish - the longest bony fish in the world, according to CIMI.”
I guess the story was worth reporting on. Since there are a lot of people who support fishes and love fishes. And also, this was very interesting since it’s the biggest fish that the people saw, and also they showed it to some 6th, 7th and 8th grades, so it was pretty big. Also, these fishes are very rare, and it’s a thing that they should share and say. So I guess that the story was worth reporting on, these aren’t my kind of stories, but I actually liked it.
Article #2:I learned about that somebody else actually found this fish before the person that I read in the first article that said she got the fish and found it, as I thought she did. Now I know what happened, and how the fish was found. This article doesn’t really catch my attention since I already read an article about this already.
I don’t think this story was worth reporting on because now it isn’t interesting since I’ve already read an article about this, and also it’s not as interesting as the first article. I liked the first article first, because it seems interesting, and it talks more about the fish, since this article talks mostly about the discovery of the fish. So, I don’t really think that this article was worth reporting on, maybe it would be if it was a bit more interesting.
I like that you were able to summarize both articles, but I do think you need to think a little deeper about your reading. What do you think this discovery means? Could it mean that something bad is happening deep in the ocean? Why would a fish that lives so deep in the ocean be found on the beach and dead?

18-foot-long sea creature found off Calif. coast
I learned a lot of different things while reading this article. Well at first I didn't know what a oarfish was, so I didn't know if 18 feet was long for that kind of animal until they said that the last one they found was 3 feet long. Then I knew that it was big. I also learned that this animal must be shiny/bright because they say that Santana say something shimmering which normally means shiny. Lastly, I learned that oarfish can grow to 50 feet long. I really likes this article and I learned alot.
I do think this article is worth to be reported on somethings but not everything. I do think that this article should be reported on because I had never even heard of a oarfish before I have read this article. I don't think this article should be reported on because I don't think it is that important. Also it is not like we are going to need this information later in life.
Oarfish washes up in Oceanside
One thing I learned about this article is that this oarfish washed up only a little over a week after the 18 foot oarfish was found. I also can infer that this area there must be a lot of oarfish in that ocean are being killed by something down in that ocean.
I think this article was worth being reported on because if there has just been two oarfish that have died maybe something is down in the ocean killing them. Also because this time it was washed up, someone didn't find it.
I like your thinking in the last paragraph. I was thinking that this discovery of a fish that usually lives so deep in the ocean is very rare and may be a warning sign for us. There could be something wrong!

In the article I learned about how their is a oarfish that is 18 ft long and that it is rarely seen. The oarfish also lives 3,000 ft below and has not been studied a lot by scientists. The oarfish is so long that 15 people had to carry it to shore. The fish can grow up to 50 ft and it’s a “deep-water pelagic fish - the longest bony fish in the world, according to CIMI”. Finally, the oarfish was a surprise to everybody because people thought that the sea serpent was a myth, but turns out to be real.
I thought this article was worth reporting on because we learned about a new sea creature called the oarfish and that it lives 3,000 ft below sea. Also because they were seen at California for some reason and died their. This is a interesting article to read because it talks about a new sea creature.
I like how you organized your thoughts in this response. I was thinking why did these fish surface on the beach when they usually live so deep in the ocean? You seemed to be wondering this, too.

In the article "18-foot-long sea creature found off Calif. coast" I learned that oarfish are the longest sea creature in the ocean. They can grow up to 50 ft! These fish are deep sea dwellers and appear on land very rarely. According to the article "hey are likely responsible for sea serpent legends throughout history." Imagine what those legends could give us! They can give us information like were they live and do they prey on humans?
In the article "Oarfish washes up in Oceanside" I read about how Oarfish are one of the rarest fish to appear on land. Also they can be up to 50 feet long as mentioned in the previous article. One new thing I learned is that they dive so far down to more than 3,000 feet! I have one question though, why did two die "of natural causes" on the same week? Could there food supply be going low? Is the water polluted?
I love your questioning at the end. I think you are on to something!!!

In this article, I learned a lot about oarfish. I was very surprised that the oarfish can be 50 feet long. Oarfish are rarely seen because they live in water 3,000 feet deep. I also found it interesting when the beach goers called the police when they found oarfish on the shore. The police then called San Diego Sea World to come get the oarfish for research.
This was worth reporting because it can attract people's attention. Also, I now know what to do if I spot an oarfish or some other dead fish on the beach. This article contained a lot of information and cool facts about oarfish. Before this article, I never heard of a oarfish.
Just like you, I had never heard of Oarfish. I wonder why did a fish so deep in the sea surface? What is going on in the depths of the ocean to make them surface? Is there a problem?

I learnt many things from these articles. One is that oarfish can grow up to 50 feet and can dive 3,000 feet deep in the water. Also that finding an 18-foot fish like this one is extremely rare, due to their usual habitat being so deep in the water. According to Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship, "We've [they have] never seen a fish this big."
I think this topic was worth reporting about for many reasons. First, this interesting topic is worth knowing about because it is very rare (and cool, for some people). Also, knowing of this topic could be very informational for those intrigued. Another reason I feel this topic was worth reporting about is because it is optional for those who want to read and learn more about the adventures, and surprises of the world.
You are so right about this be an interesting topic. I think the discovery of these fish means more then people think? Why did a fish so large that is usually found deep in the ocean surface? What was going on beneath the water? Hmmm.....?

I learned about Oar fish washing up on shores from reading 'Coast Oarfish washes up in Oceanside'. In the same week two giant oar fish washed up on shore, one 13 1/2 feet and the other 18 feet. I also learned that oar fish are likely to be responsible for serpent legends and sightings of sea monsters. I don’t believe that this article is worth reporting on. In the article it said “The fish was believed to have died of natural causes, but tissue samples were taken to be studied,” this is telling us a fish washed up on a shore dead... is this really something worth reporting on, its called the circle of life. Also another oar fish washed up on that same shore in the same week so is this really that unusual?
What I learned from 18-foot-long sea creature found off Calif. coast that oar fish are likely to be responsible for serpent legends and sightings of sea monsters. I found this interesting because I have heard of many people spotting them. Then again I do not believe this is really worth reporting on because tons or fish probably die and wash up on shore, just because it was a very big fish doesn’t really mean anything. In the article it stated “The oarfish, which can grow to more than 50 feet,” so why is 18 ft make it so special? This quote “"We've never seen a fish this big," said Mark Waddington, senior captain of the Tole Mour, CIMI's sail training ship. "The last oar fish we saw was three feet long."” did make the article sound a bit more unlikely or unique but I still do believe this article is not worth reporting on.
I like how you included quotes from the text. But, I disagree with you about the importance of this discovery. I am thinking why did these fish come to shore? Is it because of a huge storm? Hmm....? Could this discovery mean bigger things?

ReplyDeleteI learned that an Oar fish grew 18 feet and can grow up to 50, which surprised me. Also I had a question which was, don’t Oar fish live at the bottom of the ocean? Also I found out that these fish are likely responsible for sea-serpent legends. Also, Oar fish are highly unstudied by the human world. The fishes that were found took about 15 people to get it out of the water.
I think it should have been reported because this is an important finding. Oar fish are hard to find so finding the these ones will give us a better understanding of them. Also, I personally think it would be cool to see one of these creatures in real life and sharing the siting with others. This siting would educate many people today and in the future so if the carcasses were left to rot then all this good research would not exist.
You are so right! These fish are a very rare find, and I think finding them will allow scientist to learn new things. Perhaps we can learn more about the ocean from this discovery...hmmn?

These articles were very factual, and they helped me learn many new things about a creature found in two places in the same week. First, I learned that this type of fish is called an oarfish that has the ability to dive 3,000 feet deep. I also found out that the 18 feet long oarfish took more than fifteen people to drag out of the water.
I definitely think that this is a topic worth reporting. These articles were extremely interesting and I learned new things about an animal that I didn't even know existed! A topic like this should definitely be on the news because it is great for more and more people to learn about a new topic or idea. This way, people can discuss their thoughts about it and everyone can learn more! Overall, this new creature should definitely be reported.
I like your positive attitude toward learning new things!

There was a 18 foot long oar fish that washed up on the shore. There was another that a snorkeler found and asked for help to drag it to shore. This fish has silver scales. It has been put on display and also taken somewhere to be studied. To me,this article doesn't mean that much because its just a fish. Sure, it may be a "sea creature" like something out of a movie. But it doesn't have any effect on my life currently. Sure it is a cool fish that was discovered but it really doesn't have a huge effect on me.
Are you sure? What do you think this discovery could prove?
DeleteWhat did you learn from reading this article?
ReplyDeleteI learned that while on a snorkeling, Jasmine Santana made a amazing discovery. She found a 18 foot Oarfish. Because they were supposed to extinct by natural causes, studies on this fish are very limited. This is also because this fish commonly lives 3,000 feet underwater. The carcass was cut up and studied by marine biologists.
Do you think this story was worth reporting on? Why or why not?
I think this story is worth reporting on because this discovery could lead to other unknown aquatic species. 95% of the ocean is unexplored and this may lead to new findings.

Some people found a 18 ft. long sea creature. It looks like the sea creature was in a fight because in the video the sea creature was missing part of the tale and the mouth was ripped and its was bleeding. What caused the oarfish to wash up on the beach how did it reach the shore.

*What did you learn from reading this article?
*Do you think this story was worth reporting on? Why or why not?
From the first article, I learned that oar fish can grow up to be 50 feet long and the oar fish that the scientists found must have been really heavy because the one girl could not carry it herself, and I observed that the picture at the top showed many people holding it, and not just one person. I think this article was worth reporting because scientists are going to put the oar fish's body in a museum for many people to see, and let the body sit in sand and let it disintegrate so the bone can be put on display.
From the second article, I learned that oar fish dive more than 3,000 feet deep, so it was a rare sighting of the oar fish. Well, the second article was just like the first, but it didn't have all of the statistics that the first article had.
So, what do you think this discovery may mean environmentally? Why would two rare fish suddenly wash ashore dead? It makes me wonder!

Article #1
In this article I learned that recently a large fish called an oarfish was found by Mark Waddington, a marine scientist from the Catalina Island Marine Institute. Waddington discovered the fish while snorkeling near Catalina Island, in southern California. The oarfish that Waddington found was 18ft long, and Waddington had to drag the oarfish, from 30ft below the surface of the water, to 75ft to shallow water where other staff members of the institute helped pull the creature completely on to land. I think this is an important story to report on because in the article it said that it is very rare to find oarfish near land because the creature lives at depths of 3,000ft deep. After reading the article, I began to wonder just what may have caused this creature to have traveled so far. This article is important because it makes readers think.
Article #2
In this article I learned that on Friday a oarfish was found washed up on the shore in southern California. The oarfish was found by beachgoers who called the police to report the appearance of the creature. The first officer on the scene was Mark Bussey of the Oceanside PD. Bussey said that a large crowd had gathered over the course of an hour to see the rare creature. I think this article is worth reporting because it is second time this week that an oarfish which is a very rare creature has appeared near the San Diego shore. One sighting of this rare creature is unusual, but a second sighting in such a short period of time seems almost impossible. The fact that the two sightings are incredibly rare makes this an interesting and worthwhile article. Articles that make people curious are always worth writing and reading.
You did a great job of summarizing both of the articles in your own words. I agree with you that the two sightings in such close proximity makes the article very important. I am wondering if there might be something going on deep in the ocean.

Mark Waddington discovered a ginormous creature washed up on the shore. Approximately 18 feet long with a name called an oar fish. The growth of these fish can be up to 50 feet and can dive 3000 feet deep. What is funny about this article is because he had to drag the fish over 75 feet to make people believe this thing wad real.

This one measured 13 1/2 feet long and a famous scientist didn't find it. When the police arrived they called the San Diego Sea world but, didn't say what Sea world did with it after that. What was really cool with reading this article was that it said it was believed to be in most fish tales.
You did a nice of summarizing each of the articles, but you forgot to answer the second part of the prompt about whether or not this article was worth reporting on!

What did you learn from reading this article?
From this article, I learned that Jasmine Santana discovered an eighteen-foot-long fish, shimmering below the surface. She dragged it by the tail nearly seventy five feet to the shore so people could believe her. The fish was identified as an oar fish, but the largest they've ever seen! Most oar fish they see are only about three feet long. The fish most likely died of natural causes, scientists say, after taking several tests on the creature's skin tissue. 50 - 70 people were crowded around this amazing discovery.
Do you think this story was worth reporting on? Why or why not?
I think this story, while not very intriguing to some readers, is an interesting report overall. This article skims the topic of "sea monsters" and other foreign legends and stories. I think this article is something worth the time, because along with how amazing the discovery is, it really gets readers thinking and wondering.
