Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge
Here's one way to tell that you've been spending too much time with the Xbox: Your lips turn blue and you collapse
Early Tuesday morning in Columbus, Ohio, 15-year-old Tyler Rigsby emerged from his bedroom after at least four straight days of playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, lured out by his mom with the promise of visiting his aunt's house. Once there, Rigsby collapsed three times, his face pale and lips blue. Emergency doctors at a local hospital treated him for severe dehydration and exhaustion, and his mom, Jessie Rawlins, promptly got rid of the Xbox. Rigsby isn't the first person to sacrifice his health thanks to video-game addiction, either. Here's a look at his story, and the bizarre tendency to game-till-you-drop:
Did Rigsby really play Modern Warfare for four days?
Four or five; his family isn't really sure. Rigsby did nap for a couple hours here and there during his marathon gaming session, and leave his room a few times — for snacks, bathroom breaks, and one quick shower — but otherwise was holed up with his Xbox. By the time he arrived at his aunt's house, "it's like he was looking at me but he wasn't there — it was like he was looking through me," the aunt, Jennifer Thompson, tells WCMH-TV. "We were talking and I heard a thump and I looked over and he just fell."
What caused him to collapse?
Dehydration, most likely: When you expel more liquids than you drink in, your blood volume shrinks, lowering blood pressure, sometimes to the point where a lack of oxygen in your brain makes you pass out, says Dr. Mike Patrick, an emergency physician at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Severe dehydration can also cause brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, blood clots, and even death. Of course, it's possible Rigsby passed out because he had barely slept for four or five days, says Dr. Patrick. "After so long, [your neural system] stops firing and you just go to sleep whether you want to or not." This was the first time Rigsby had such an incident, Rawlins tells The Columbus Dispatch. "I never in a million years thought that a video game would involve his health."
Are such gaming-related mishaps unusual?
Not unusual enough. In some ways, Rigsby was lucky, says Michelle Castillo at CBS News. Other non-stop gamers who forgot to drink liquids have died. Asia seems especially prone to gaming fatalities: Last month, a Taiwanese 18-year-old died in an internet cafe after a nonstop 40-hour Diablo session, while a Chinese gamer died in February 2011 after playing for three days with little food or sleep.
But the problem is global. In August 2011, 20-year-old British "Xbox addict" Chris Staniforth died after a blood clot traveled to his lung from his calf, a consequence of sitting for extended periods. And the gamers themselves aren't the only ones who get hurt: In 2010, a British mother was banned from the internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds.
What lessons can we draw from Tyler's close call?
For one, says Dr. Patrick, those who insist on marathon gaming need to use some common sense: Remember to drink and eat enough, get up and move around every once in a while, and turn off the TV or computer and get some real sleep. We also have to look at Rigby's "mom's inability to intervene and end this persistent threat to the health of her child over the course of five days," says Owen Good at Kotaku. Five days! Getting rid of the Xbox is a good step, but I doubt it "totally solves all the problems in this household."

- Are you a hardcore gamer? If not, do you know any? What’s the longest stretch of video gaming that you or your friends have ever done?
- In your opinion, do video games have an overall positive or negative impact on teenagers? Why?
- Should there be a minimum age for playing video games? Why or why not?
- Should Rigsby’s parents be charged with neglect for letting their son do so much gaming?
- Is video gaming something you need to keep under control in order to be successful in high school? If not, what are your “binge” habits and how can you work on controlling them?

In my opinion, video games have an negative impact on teenagers.
Video games have an negative impact on teenagers because it's not healthy. Playing nonstop can cause brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, blood clots, and even death. For example,"a Chinese gamer died in February 2011 after playing for three days with little food or sleep.",states "Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge". Another example,"a British mother was banned from the internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs", states "Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge". Another negative impact is that that don't get enough sleep, food, and water. Therefore, overall in my opinion video games have a negative impact on teenagers.

Yes I do think that Rigsby's parents should be charged with neglect for letting him play for so long. If Rigsby had been playing for that long and his parents not even know how long he was playing for, means that they were not paying any attention at all to him in the time that he was playing. "Four or five days; his family isn't really sure." States the article "Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge" This could also mean that the parents are just abusive, they don't really care what he does, they do not guide him or parent him, or they are alcoholics. Obviously gaming for four days is not normal at all and there is something else going on in Rigsby's house. I am sure that it has something to do with his parents. That is why I think that Rigsby's parents should be charged for neglect.

According to the article, “Teen Hospitalized after 4-day Video Game Binge,” explains how when you play video games or computer games for to long it can sometimes lead to death and/or dehydration. In Ohio, 15 year-old, Tyler Rigsby sat in his room for five days straight and played with video games. Finally his mom said enough is enough and took him to his aunts house for a visit where he passed out with a pale face and blue lips. After she figured out the cause was video games she immediately through the X-Box away.
If I were Tyler’s parents I would of thrown the X-Box away a 5 days earlier, I would of not let him play for even a straight day. I do think Tyler’s parents should be charged for neglecting there son for 5 days so they learn there lesson. According to Owen Good, “ Mom’s inability to intervene and end this persistent threat to the health of her child over the course of five days.” I think that is she took away the X- box a long time a go this would of never happened and Tyler would be healthy. Though she blames him for this, it is her own fault.
You are correct. I think it is important for parents to model good behavior. Do you think she may have not realized how big the problem was? Perhaps she didn't take it as seriously as she should have?

Almost all kids play video games, but did you know it could lead to your death? There are many side effects from non-stop gaming, most of them are deadly. Video games have so many negative effects on people. They get you nowhere in life. Dr. Mike Patrick states “ Those who insist on marathon gaming use some common sense remember to drink and eat enough” This doctor is wrong, if you INSIST on marathon gaming you need help. you need to quit and think how just ruined wonderful days of your life. For what? To slay the magical dragon?
Video gaming is pointless, all it can cause is trouble for you, your families, and others around you. Video games get you nowhere in life. You gain a very little amount of fast thinking and hand to eye coordination, but not the amount you’d gain from playing four days of sports compared to four days video games.
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
DeleteI like your point about being able to gain fast thinking and coordination from playing outside sports. I don't think there is anything wrong with playing a video game, but I think it needs to be in moderation.

Columbus,Ohio, 15 year old Tyler Rigsby was hospitalized for playing four straight days of call of duty modern warfare. He did have some snack breaks and bathroom breaks but that was it. To me that is insane, to play four straight days of video games even if I did my parents would have stopped me. Doctors treated Tyler with severe dehydration and exhaustion. Tyler is not the only one who has experienced this Taiwanese 18 year old died in an internet cafe after a nonstop 40-hour Diablo session. Not only Teenagers are having problems with gaming but as well as adults, as stated in Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge ‘In 2010 a british mother was banned from the internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online small worlds. Wow, Neglecting your own kids and your dogs for a video game!? Gaming is definitely something that you need to keep under controlled because you can get carried away and you can even die.
Jonathan,
DeleteI agree with you! This is insane! I was shocked to read that his parents were not more involved. It is hard for me to connect to the kids in the article because my parents would never have allowed me to play video games for that long.

There should be a minimum age for playing violent video games. In the article, “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge”, it says that 15-year-old Tyler Rigsby played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for four days straight. I think that there should be a more strict rule for the minimum age to play violent video games. The rule today is that you have to be eighteen, but if you have a parent with you when you purchase the game, it is okay. This rule should be much more looked out for. If a 2nd grade boy is allowed to buy a violent game, he will get addicted to it. The more he plays, the more angry he will get when he loses or dies. This will make little boys want to play more and more until they get a good score, or until they win. If the age rule changes, the only people that will be able to buy the violent games are eighteen year olds. They will be mature enough so they won’t overdo their playing time, and they will be responsible to eat healthy and drink water if they do play for a long period of time. Unlike Tyler Rigsby, he played the game uncontrollably for four days, with hardly any food or water. If only mature people will be able to play the games, there will be no more unfortunate events with video games. Tyler Rigsby was very irresponsible, and that is why I think that video games should have a minimum age of eighteen years old.
I agree that these games should not be played by kids under 18 years old. I do want to point out that even adults can become addicted. Remember the women from the article who neglected her kids and pets?

After hearing about so many deaths from over - playing video games, it seems like there should be some restriction to this. I feel like there should be a minimum age of at least eighteen. Nowadays, there are very many violent video games that children as young as even seven play, even though the manufacturer has clearly smacked a giant “M” on the box to inform that it is not to be played by anyone under the age of seventeen. When I was at a friend’s house visiting, I saw just how many of these rated mature games they owned. It was unbelievable. And looking at the rating descriptions, they have extremely graphic content such as graphic violence and gore, extreme language and extremely crude humor. These should not be accessible for children. With these games, they can not only be sucked in for days, but they can also catch on to these violent behaviors. This is why I think that video games should not be accessible to young children.

Video gaming overall has a negative impact on teenagers. The most important flaw that you can learn from this article is that it can impact your health. Constant video gaming can cause dehydration, which can lead to, “...brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, blood clots, and even death.” One of the worst ways to die is through playing a video game. Just as Rawlins says, “I never in a million years thought that a video game would involve his health.”
Also, video games can have a negative impact on teenagers because they can become an addiction. When you get addicted to something, you want to do it all the time. Wherever you are, you have a urge inside you to do it. Video gaming is probably one of the most common object that teenagers get addicted to. They try to play it whenever they can and this can have a negative impact on their academics, social life, and even their relationship with their family members. That little itch to play can take away from your whole life.
As you can see, many flaws come with playing video games. You can get addicted, but more importantly, it can impact your health.

I am not a hard core gamer like Tyler Rigsbey from Ohio. I play videogames like any other boy , But I do not play long before I make myself starve, or get dehydrated.I am not like some people like A british mother who neglected her kids because of a game. her kids did not get food water or anything they had to take care of themselves. I do not have kids obviously but I can relate to my parents and siblings. The longest I have ever played video games was for three and a half hours but when I play I bring up water and fruit so I do not get too focused and get dehydrated or starve. I know lots of people who are way too obsessed with video games. My friend played for ten hours NO BREAK! I told him he should not play that long and he did not listen and the next day he had a really bad headache. I told him so. I also like video games but I am not obsessed.

I have many reactions and questions to the article, Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge. I was amazed at how long a 15-year-old can continuously game. The longest I’ve ever gamed is about 1½ hours long. How can he game continuously without the proper amount of food, water, and sleep time? I mean think about it. Could you have tons of stress on your eyes without your essential needs(food, water, sleep time, etc.)? I am amazed that he could go a full day without sleep in his gaming marathon. When I read “Other non-stop gamers who forgot to drink liquids have died.”… “Last month, a Taiwanese 18-year-old died in an internet cafe after a nonstop 40-hour Diablo session”... “a Chinese gamer died in February after playing for three days without little food or sleep,” I was surprised. This means that this is a worldwide issue. Rigsby was very lucky. While Rigsby was in the hospital, his mom got rid of his XBOX. I agree with this, because he is obviously addicted to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. When I also read “In 2010, a British mother was banned from the Internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs, because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds,” I was surprised. This means that not just kids, but also adults are becoming addicted to games. This non-stop gaming is going to far. Gaming is like a disease and it will not stop. This will affect more and more people unless we stop it. People should stop non-stop gaming.

I had many different reactions to the article, "Teen Hospitalized After a 4 Day Video Game Binge". One reaction I had to this article is that some of the examples given in this article are ridiculously unhealthy. For example in the article is states that 15 year old Tyler Rigsby had a gaming session of Call of Duty Modern Warfare for 4 days straight. My first reaction to this is dude get a life. And I say this in the meanest way possible This kid needs to understand that this is not normal at all. I do not play Xbox 360 during the week because I am cautious about my grades and education. But during the weekend I usually hangout with my friends all day but an average day on a weekend its 2 to 3 hours on the Xbox. Not 4 days straight. This kid needs some friends to keep him busy. Another reaction of mine is when the article stated that "A Taiwanese 18 year old boy DIED in an internet cafe after a nonstop 40 hour Diablo session, while a Chinese gamer died in February 2011 after playing for three days with little food or sleep. My second reaction is how can this guy be such an idiot to forget to eat and drink water. This just disgusts me that a guy is so obsessed with his little video game that he does not eat or drink in three days. Consider me disappointed. Also the article talks about how a British 20 year old Xbox addict Chris Staniforth died after getting a blood clot that traveled from his calf to his lung after sitting a long period gaming. My last and final thought to this article that this is going way to far. This is disgusting and unhealthy. And this needs to be limited to humans. And they need to control their gaming circumstances. If they wanna live their life gaming 24/7 fine go ahead its their loss. No pun intended.
You seem to have a firm grip on how to balance your work and play. I think you missed that these kids have problems way beyond just playing video games. I think they have become addicted!

Yes, video gaming is something that you need to keep under control in order to be successful in high school. One reason video gaming needs to be under control is because it keeps you from doing anything useful, such as studying, or doing homework. If kids are just playing video games all day, then when do they have the time to study? Without studying, you can’t ensure that you will pass tests, or exams. If you keep failing your tests, then the likelihood of you being accepted into a good college is very slim. And without getting into a good college, you may not get a good job and live happily.
Another reason video gaming needs to be kept under control in order to be successful in high school is because it is not healthy for you. People have died or been seriously sick because of video game addiction. In the article “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge,” it states, “In August 2011, 20-year-old British Xbox addict Chris Staniforth died after a blood clot traveled to his lung from his calf, a consequence of sitting for extended periods.” These kinds of fatalities can keep a kid out of school for an extended period of time, making it extremely hard for him or her to catch up in their work. Sometimes, when the kids die, they basically throw their life away for a game that won’t achieve them anything in life. Then there won’t be a need to be successful in high school because they would be dead.
The evidence above proves that video gaming needs to be kept under control for kids to be successful in high school.

A teen got hospitalized after playing 4-5 days of video games non-stop.His name was Tyler Rigsby and he was just fifteen years old. He was going to his aunt’s house and he just collapsed their. His face turned pale and his lips turned blue. After this incident Tyler’s mom got rid of the Xbox. Doctors say that he got lucky because most people who do similar things like that usually die.
In my opinion, I definitely think that it was a good idea for Rigsby’s mom to take away the Xbox. I think this because according to the article it states” In some ways Rigsby was lucky...other nonstop gamers who forgot to drink liquids have died.”.

Are you a hardcore gamer? If not, do you know any? What’s the longest stretch of video gaming that you or your friends have ever done? No, I am not a “hardcore” gamer. I do know of some people who play non stop. The longest gaming session me and my friends have done is 1 hour.
In your opinion,do video games have an overall positive or negative effect on Teenagers. Why? In my opinion I think video games have a negative impact on teenagers because, if they are concentrating too much on video games and less on school they are likely to fail most of their classes.

Tuesday, Columbus Ohio, 15 year old Tyler Rigsby collapsed at his aunt's house for a visit. Playing a video game called Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare for 4 days straight. Tyler was rushed to the E.R doctors diagnosed it as lack of liquids also meaning dehydration. He was lucky other cases similar to this one was either hospitalized or died from the lack of liquids in the body. This story is good example of video games being negative to teenagers by them not taking care of themselves by not drinking enough liquids. Video games should have a set time limit to them for the players safety and health
Many people may play videogames but not all no how to control how much they should play and take it to the extreme. I myself am not a gamer I just play a little but my cousin on the other hand is a gamer and plays 24/7 on weekdays he plays until 3 or 4 in the morning and on weekends he will play all day and won't get up to eat his mom brings him the food. He will still play while he’s eating his favorite game is call of duty black ops and the new one that just came out i'm not sure what its called. Now that I know about this i will tell him so he can know the risks of playing video games for too long and he will consider playing for less time. Like the article said you can get dehydrated and other things. Hopfully nobody else has to go to the hospital for playing video games.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article Teen Hospitalized after a four day Video Game Binge, my opinion about video games is very negative. Kids could get very hurt and even die from playing video games! For example, there was a 15 year old boy named Tyler Rigsby that past out from playing video games for 4-5 days straight. His family went to their aunt’s house and Tyler all of a sudden collapsed when his grandmother was talking to him. ‘’Its like he was looking at me but he wasn’t there- it was like he was looking through me’’’, says his aunt Jennifer Thompson. Tyler got very little sleep, food and water. This caused him to get dehydrated. Tyler was very lucky that this incident didn't cause him to lose his life.

Even video games can have a bad effect on adults! For example, in 2010 a British mother was banned from using the internet because she was so addicted she would forget about her family including her pets. WOW!
Overall video games have a horrible effect on kids and even adults. Video can cause major effects on people and even death. People should stay away from video games as much as they can.
Not sure how your name and class period got into the middle of the blog. It kind of confused me!

I know a couple of people that are hardcore gamer, and they are all family members. The longest stretch that I went on is probably 1-2 hours, i’m not a big fan of video games, but my brother is, he went for 5 hours without stopping to take a single break for anything. Sometimes I worry that my brother might play for too long but he knows how long he can play at a time. I think that everyone should have a time limit on how long they play because of what can happened if they play for days at a time. No one should have to go through all of this just to get a new high score or even to beat a friend. You should only play for an hour or so, but not every day either. Once you die, you don’t just restart like when you're playing a video game, your life will be over, permanently. So if you know someone that is a hardcore gamer, tell them to stop playing it sometimes, or don’t play it every day. Just to keep them safe.

I thought this topic was very interesting. Video games have an overall negative impact on teenagers. First, video games are obviously addictive. They are in fact so addictive that people forget to use common sense. They sometimes forget to eat or drink or even move around. If people don’t drink anything, they get dehydrated. The article says, “when you expel more liquids than you drink in, your blood volume shrinks, lowering blood pressure, sometimes to the point where a lack of oxygen in your brain makes you pass out, says Dr. Mike Patrick, an emergency physician”. Sometimes teens get so dehydrated that they die. The sad part is, is that it is not uncommon. People globally have died from playing video games for so long that they don’t eat or drink so they become dehydrated and they die. I think that is ridiculous. I think the lesson of this article is that if you get addicted to something, just use common sense.

The article “Teen Hospitalized After A 4-Day Video Game Binge” has really put emphasis on the negativity of teenagers video game bingeing.
While teen’s play away on their Xbox’s and Playstation’s, they aren’t thinking of the after effects. Their silly, little games can lead to their own health at stake, and their future careers.
Tyler Rigsby, a mere 15 year old of Columbus, Ohio, was hospitalized after a five-day marathon of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.” While at his aunt’s house, he collapsed due to lack of hydration and exhaustion. An average parent would be shocked of how often this really happens, even in worse case scenarios.
Of course, this is actually a global problem. In Asia, a Taiwanese 18 year old died in an internet cafe after a non-stop 40 hour session of Diablo. Another fatality happened to a British Xbox addict. 20 year old, Chris Staniforth died from a blood clot. From lack of movement, the clot traveled from his calf to his lungs.
If teenagers continue to binge their whole life, they might end up like a British mother, who neglected the care of her own children and dogs, while she played the internet game Small Worlds.
To continue, the effects and after effects of bingeing on teenagers, are completely and utterly negative.

I think that video games, in moderation, can actually help with the teenager and their life. Studies have shown that doctors that play video games have 32% less errors when performing procedures. Of course I agree with Dr Patrick completely: if you are not on the system for 3-5 days at once, and if you get up and drink some water, you shouldn't be falling over and fainting. A lot of people do long gaming marathons, but they get sleep and always bring water. The story about the British mother was horrible, I cant believe she did that to her children. It was her fault and she deserved the ban. She let gaming get a hold of her life and she should have known better. If you use common scene and moderate your gaming, you should be fine.

In my opinion video games are good and bad for teenagers. People say that video games are bad. I agree but not all are bad, some video games can be educational. Games that teach kids how to spell and write are good, although some video games can be bad. Also video games can promote fitness and exercise like running and yoga. Even though video games are thought to be bad for the brain there are some that help with skills. Video games can be bad because kids will find one or two games they really like and play it whenever they get the chance. Video games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Call of Duty Blackops can promote bad actions and can be very addictive. I even play Call of Duty Blackops but not to the point where it may interfere with my health like Rigsby did. I have never met someone that is that hardcore of a gamer that they play four four days straight! Kids like Rigsby need to know forehand that too much gaming can play a role in your health. Dr Mike Patrick said in the article Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge “ For one, those who insist on marathon gaming need to use common sense...”. Kids can participate in gaming marathons although they need to beware of their health before they start. That is my opinion on video games having an impact on teenagers lives.

Too Much Video Games
In my opinion video games have a very negative effect on teenagers because the teenagers get so much extra time that they could be using to study for a test the next week or reading a book due 2 weeks later and are using that valuable time to play video games. With video games there is really no point in them because you don’t get a prize or anything if you win. In fact the only prize you could get out of video games is having the satisfaction of beating the game before your friend or being a higher level than them. Also, the video games are not only controlling the teens lives but it is also becoming a part of their daily routine. The video games are also leading to obesity because the kids are not getting any of the exercise that they need. It is a proven fact that having too much time in front of a “blue screen” (Tv’s, video games, phones, etc) delays your attention span. When teens attention spans get cut down then they are not able to focus in school. Video games are a bad habit to get addicted to because they cause teens to act like the video games are real life and act like they are actually in the game. If this happens it could lead to video games taking over teens lives and may even end up to killing someone. Overall, it is important to not spend too much time on video games because they are a bad habit. Video games are controlling teens lives.

The book crossing the wire is about two teenagers named Victor Flores and Rico trying to get in the U.S. illegally because Both of their families are running low on money. Since they have no money to pay the people who smuggle people into the U.S. they must get across illegally. This takes place from a small village in Mexico called Los Arboles and takes places in different areas in Mexico and Arizona.
Them trusting some people, that was a big mistake because some of the people they trusted were criminals. The people they also trusted could have turned them in. But luckily they were never caught because they were helped by normal citizens to cross the border.
Victor and Rico finally makes it to the border into Arizona and Victor gets a job but Rico decides to go back to his hometown Los Arboles. I wish I had all the guts to do what Victor does.

In my opinion video games have a negative effect on teenagers. Video games can be fun but harmful. For example they might be getting a "F" in a class because they don't really care about their grade, they just want to play video games. They might not care until they realize they must change that grade to an "A" or "B+" so they can get into the college they want. Video games can also kill people. In the article "Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day video game binge", it states "Other non-stop gamers who forgot to drink liquids have died." When Jessie Rawlins realizes that the Xbox could cause harm she threw it out. Dr. Patrick says people who play videogames too much need to use use common sense. Playing Video games has many negative effects on both kids and adults.

There are many marathon gamers around the world who don’t see how bad gaming can really be. In my opinion, video games have an overall negative impact on teens because addiction to a game is bad for their health, and can affect people surrounding the addict, not just him/her self. First, addiction to gaming can greatly impact one's’ health. According to the article “ Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge”, 15 year-old Tyler Rigsby collapsed at his aunt’s house after 4-5 straight days of playing video games on bis X-Box. Tyler had suddenly collapsed from severe dehydration and/or because his neural system needed sleep. It would not make sense for people to give up possibly their entire lives just to continually play a videogame for a couple of days. Is it really worth risking your health? Even worse, gaming fatalities such as this one are not uncommon. Especially in Asia, many non-stop gamers have died from lack of fluids in the body. One British video game addict had died for a blood clot traveling to his lung from his calf which is a result of sitting for too long. Also, extended periods of gaming can not only affect the player, but people around them too. According to the same article above, it says,” in 2010, a British mother was banned from the internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds.” This quote proves how addictive gaming could change your life. It has permanently scarred the British mothers’ three kids for life. Her children could be influenced with an urge to be exactly like their mother when they grow older possibly adding to the list of fatalities. Based from the information from this article, it is easily shown that addiction to video gaming is very bad for both adults and teen because of thee suffering of their health, and neglect towards others.

ln your opinion do video games have a positive or negative impact on kids? Why?
I think they have a negative effect because they waste time and it empties out what you have learned over the past few days. There are lots of marathon gamers around the world but a teenager was lucky in one of the stories told.
After Tyler Rigsby marathon of video games I think he lost some knowledge of what he learned school. After he played 4-5 days straight of Modern Warfare without much food, water, and sleep he risked his health and he collapsed 4 times. One of the pass outs was when he was talking to his aunt and he just fell to the floor unexpectedly just because of the lack of food, water and sleep mostly because of water and sleep. If you don't get enough sleep whether you like it or not your body falls asleep for you.
This is why I think that video games are bad for your health and why you should only play for a little and have common sense when you are playing.
I like how you summarized the article. It shows me that you understood what you read, but I'd like see you include more of your own thoughts next time.

Question: In your opinion, do video games have an overall positive or negative impact on teenagers? Why?
In my opinion, video games can have a very negative effect on teenagers. Teenagers should be exercising, and hanging out with friends; not being holed up playing video games for hours on end.
In the article, Teen Hospitalized after a 4 Day Video Game Binge, it talks about 15 year old Tyler Rigsby, and his recent video game related health scare. Tyler was playing video games on his Xbox for 4-5 days straight, with short breaks for sleep and small portions of water and food. After ending the outrageous marathon of constant electronics, he went out to visit his aunt. His aunt says, “It was like he was looking at me but he wasn’t there. It was like he was looking through me.” Since Tyler’s lack of proper hydration and rest, his body eventually shut down, and he fainted 3 times. Dr. Mike Patrick, of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital says, “Severe dehydration can also lead to a coma, brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, blood clots, and even death.” Rigsby got off easy, seeing as many other extreme gamers have died from multiple day gaming binges.
The increasing threat from video games is growing, and these day long gaming session are rapidly increasing. Teens are taking these fun pass- times to the extreme, thus causing the amount of game related deaths and health problems to rise. Parents need to know when enough is enough, and when to tell their children it’s time to put the games down. Video games are fine to play from time to time, but 4 day long sessions are definitely a bad idea. In the previously stated article it mentions that, “Getting rid of the Xbox is a good step, but it will not solve all of the problems in the household. Video Games are giving off a negative impact to the youth of this generation.

I am not necessarily a hardcore gamer but I do play video games pretty much every other day for at least an hour or so. I think a hardcore gamer is a person who plays at least once a day for at least two hours. A lot of my good friends are hardcore gamers like Peter and Garrett. They play for at least 2 hours on a daily basis. The longest stretch of gaming I ever did was at least 9 hours with little snack breaks, bathroom breaks and the occasional “wrestling” break. I was sleeping over at Garretts house and we played for a straight 8 hours at the very least while staying up all night. Another time was when I was sleeping over at Peter’s house and we literally played Xbox all night without any breaks. We mostly played Halo Reach at both sleepovers because we were addicted to it and we didn’t want to stop even when we started to get “droopy eyes”. I could make a lot of connections with the article because I play video games. Probably most boys could relate to the article too. One question that I was wondering about the article was what level did Tyler Rigsby get to and what level he was in COD:MW prior to his gaming marathon.
I liked that you didn't mention last names of your friend, but in the future I'd like to avoid names at all unless you have their permission.

Fifteen year old Tyler Rigsby fainted three times and his lips were blue and was very pale. This was after four days of gaming, Which his parents shouldn’t of allowed him to do. I think that his parents should be charged with neglect for letting their son do this. After four straight days of gaming and only stopping for snacks, bathroom breaks, and one quick shower. His parents should be paying more attention to their son because if their son was in his room for four straight days they should at least check and see what’s up or if he’s okay. The parents should have some common sense and think maybe a four day gaming session is a bad idea. Rigsby’s parents are lucky that nothing worse happened to their son considering all the other things that have happened to other people for gaming for an extended amount of time. Yes Tyler should have some common sense and stop himself from gaming for four days ,But his parents should stop him and discipline him before before his gaming session gets out of hand.

I am a gamer and i admit it, but my limit is three hours or less not four straight days. I can relate to the kid but when i play i take brakes eat to go to the bathroom or to rest a little. But four days with barley eating sleeping drinking or going to the bathroom, that is just something else. If playing COD:MW you would be hospitalized i would be in the hospital every day, and i just play COD:MW one hour or less. And sometimes playing just gets way out of hand and you go fr more and more time until you win maybe that's what happened to the kid.

I think that video games make a negative impact on teenagers, because of two reasons, and one positive reason. My reasons are kids need to be active, and kids can entertain themselves with video games, but not in a healthy way, and finally, school work is getting taken over by video games. Read on to find out more about negative and small positive things about video games.
To start, kids need to stay active and healthy. When kids sit in front of any screen they are not running or playing or moving around. Also they usually get fast easy make-able food so they don't need to get up for very long. Kids need to move around and be ACTIVE! Because if they don’t the article titled, Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game binge, states “Dehydration and not sleeping could have something to do with his passing out.”
Secondly, video games can entertain kids but too much can affect their life. If kids spend say 4 days in front of a screen that would mean they are addicted and it is hard for them to leave to go to the bathroom or eat or sleep. These things and more are very essential for life and if these things don’t happen there is a risk of someone dying.
Additionally, video games are bad for teenagers because they have kids focusing on them and no the kids homework or school work. These simple things effect everything like where you go to college if you get into a college, which leads to where you work, your wealth, and more. And this would all happen because of a too much video games as a kid.
Finally you now know about how teenagers need their video games limited. If parents let their kids play too much video games they will be letting their kids ruin their life.
In the article Teen Hospitalized after a Four day Video Gaming Binge , I realized how dangerous electronics can be! I like to go on my ipad, phone, or wii sometimes, but it is very rare that I will sit on it for more than 2 hours, unless it is wii sports, or just dance. This doesn’t happen to me because I just don’t have the time to do it. I will be at someone’s house, at dance, or doing chores. Also, my parents just don’t let me do it! In the article it said that the boy’s parent’s didn’t even know that he wasn’t eating, drinking, sleeping, and didn’t even know how long he was doing it! My parents always make sure I have a snack, or water with me wherever I go. What this boy’s parents shows, is that they don’t care about him enough to pay attention to something that could be life threatening! Me and my friends have never played a game longer than 3 hours, and I think that should be the limit.
ReplyDeleteI think that video games have a negative impact on teens because they make kids think that it's cool to be violent because it was in the game. That causes kids to do stupid things. I think that high schoolers shouldn’t be able to play video games because they can get more ideas in their heads that can cause them to hurt themselves and others. I also think they Rigsby’s parents should be charged with neglect because in the article it said that his parents didn’t even know how many days he was in his room that shows that they don’t pay enough attention to him. You need to keep video gaming under control because you can get too distracted by thinking about the video game, while you are taking an important test. Overall I think that video games should be kept under control and parents should be more involved to keep their children safe.

The article Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge stated that 15-year-old Tyler Rigsby got health issues for just playing a video game or 4 days called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Rigsby’s parents should not be charged with neglect for letting their son do so much gaming because if he is 15 years old, then he should have his own responsibility for gaming, like deciding how much time you will play, then do some homework after that. For example, in some game handbooks it states that you should at least take an hour break before playing again, because in this case Rigsby’s face turned palm and his lips turned blue, and he just collapsed to the floor. If he knew that he was going to his aunt’s house, then he could have gotten ready to go to his aunt’s house instead of playing on his Xbox right before he was going to go. For instance I do play video games, but really no one would probably play for 4 days without any sleep and food. This is probably because he has not gotten enough sleep and has been dehydrated, which basically means that this is his own fault and his own responsibility. For instance, I do play video games, but really no one would probably play a game straight for 4 days.

For my opinion, video games are mainly have a negative effect on people. I think teenagers should spend not a lot of time of screen time and more time outside. In the article “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge” it tells you about a boy who has to go to the hospital because of a marathon of video games. It stated, “...Tyler Rigsby emerged from his bedroom after at least four straight hours playing Call of Duty… Rigsby collapsed three times, his face pale and lips blue.” This means that because of four hours of playing a video, he fainted three times. Rigsby got very dehydrate and “Teen Hospitalized after 4 day Video Game Binge” stated, “severe dehydration can also cause brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, blood clots, and even death.” This does not have any positive effect on video games but it reminds kids to not play that long because now they know the income. They can be doing something else instead of video games, like read a book study for a test, or go outside and play with a friend. All of these options are better choices than playing a video game.

ReplyDeleteIn your opinion, do video games have an overall positive or negative impact on teenagers? Why?
Video games in my opinion aren't good for you one bit. playing video games has no benefit unless it’s for learning. Video games are so bad that people can die from it. you can also hurt not only you but other people. For example, “ In 2010, a British mother was banned from the internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds.” In my opinion that’s just sad. How could someone be so in to a video game that they forget about their loved ones.
more ways you can harm yourself with video games are, you can forget to eat, you can forget to drink, you can sit for too long and get blood clots, and yes I will say it again… you can die. So please do yourself a favor today and either don’t play video games at all or make sure you know to care for your self and others.

There are many reasons why gamers should stop their video game addictions. The article Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge explains how teenagers have had serious factors of dehydration and exhaustion-- from playing video games. The first reason: According to the article Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge, “... and left his room a few times -- for snacks, bathroom breaks, and one quick shower…”. This tells us to get up and move around; eat, drink, go outside, and get some ACTUAL sleep. The second reason: The article Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge has stated “... a Taiwanese 18-year-old died in an internet cafe after a 40-hour Diablo session…”. This statement show that gamers can die from playing video games too much. Kind of like the first reason; non-stop gaming. The third and final reason: “... a British mother was banned from the internet and given a two year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds,” according to Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge. This statement tells us that you have to step away -- like in the last two reasons -- and be responsible. In conclusion, this article tells us to not be too attached to our video games.

Video Games
Video games have an overall negative impact on teenagers. One of the most important reasons being that the addiction to video games is extremely harmful. Live example being Tyler Rigsby, a 15-year old, mentioned in the article, TEEN HOSPITALIZED AFTER A 4-DAY VIDEO GAME BINGE!
Rigsby played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for a continuous 4 or 5 days. In effect, was hospitalized for dehydration, lack of sleep, etc. Jessie Rawlins, mother of video game victim, Rigsby, tells The Columbus Dispatch, “I never in a million years thought that a video game would involve his [Rigsby’s] health.”
Later when Rigsby went to his aunt’s house right after his 4/5 day video gaming marathon, he was worn out and not in the best condition, a feeling not explainable. His aunt says that she felt like Rigsby was looking through her rather than at her. That really explains what condition he was in. A clearly unsafe one. One second he was sitting on the chair the next he fell to the ground. Just imagine experiencing that.
There are many ways to show that you have gone overboard, without rest, food, water, etc. For example, when your lips turn blue and you collapse, like in Rigsby’s case. Not only can you just tell, but the after effects, aren't safe either. Some like Rigsby are just lucky and get out of danger. But their were other people in the world who gave their lives away, because of one decision, constant video gaming.
As surprising as this is, it’s eye-opening that a “British mother was banned from the internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds.” From this you can so clearly see that teenagers aren't the only problem. But in this case as well, if the guidance adult is addicted to video games, it can have an affect on the teenagers, kids of any age.
In conclusion, video games are harmful in many ways. One example mentioned being, that they can cause illnesses when played for a long time. In my opinion, video games do not affect teenagers positively. Would you still play them?

Gaming is a serious issue because kids and even adults are getting severely injured and some end up dead. Tyler Rigsby a 15 year old from Ohio went on a 4 day marathon of Modern Warfare. He only left his room for snacks, water, a quick shower , and a short nap. At the end of his marathon he went to his aunt's house where he blacked out he was rushed to the hospital and was soon fine. The doctors think he passed out from dehydration but he was fine so it may have also been from just not a lot of sleep and his body shut down.
Gaming is a negative effect on kids depending on how long they play and when they play. If they are sitting in front of a screen not thinking, they are focused on the game not their own needs. Doing long marathons like Rigby and people everywhere is dangerous so take breaks if you do marathon.

In the article “Teen Hospitalized after 4-day Video Game Binge” a 15 year old boy named Tyler Rigsby collapsed most likely from severe dehydration in his Aunt's house. It was on a Tuesday morning in Columbus, Ohio when Tyler emerged from his room. His family said that Tyler did take a nap for a couple hours and left his room a few times for snacks, bathroom breaks, and a quick shower. Tyler’s mom got rid of their Xbox after the incident. Tyler was also very lucky because people die from video game addictions, especially in Asia. A 18 year old Taiwanese boy died after non stop 40 hour Diablo session and a Chinese gamer dies after playing for three days with little food or sleep. My question is why did the Chinese gamer die when he played a shorter amount of time then Tyler? Also an incredible story to me was that a British mother was neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was obsessed with the internet game "Small World."
In my opinion I am not a hard core gamer maybe a little of of hardcore TV watcher, but I am not a hardcore gamer. Also the longest stretch of time I have ever played was maybe 8 pm to 11pm(could have been a little longer) which in my opinion is not that long compared to others.

In my choice of opinion, the reason why I believe Tyler Rigsby suffered from dehydration, lack of fluids to increase his blood pressure and also of course decrease of oxygen to the brain. Which caused Tyler to pass out immediately three times. Dr. Mike Patrick a physician at the Nationwide Childrens Hospital briefly states quote "...it's possible that Tyler Rigsby may have passed out from shortage of sleep from four to five days...” Rigsby is not the only victim of gaming obsessions that will cause severe disorders. The continent of Asia was prone to numerous fatalities due to dehydration and brain damage. Two years ago in February 11, 2013 a Taiwanese 18 year-old died, because of little food or sleep for almost three whole days.
One question I had about this eye-popping article was that after many near-death experiences some teenagers had, were they ever examined for long periods of check up to check up? If so then gaming for extended periods of time may be one of the most famous killers globally, besides suicide and homicide.

The article “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge” explains how Tyler Rigsby played video games for four days straight with a couple of very small breaks. Once I read about Tyler Rigsby, I was shocked that his parents would allow him to play video games for 4 days straight. I thought in my head “Where were the parents during all of this?”. I do not think that is was a good decision for Tyler’s parents to let him do all this gaming, but I do not think that they should be charged. Parents can make whatever decisions they want, and unless it is a great chance of their kid dying, nobody can do anything about it except authorities.
Most logical parents would disagree strongly with their parenting, but all they can do is put shame on the parents of Tyler Bigsby. Tylers aunt explained that when his whole gaming situation was over, it looked like he was “looking through me”. Soon afterwards, Tyler collapsed a couple of times. Doctors say that dehydration was the main cause of the collapsing, and Tyler was lucky that is was nothing worse. One of the good parenting decisions after this whole ordeal was that Tyler’s mom decided to get rid of the X-Box.
Overall, Tyler’s experience was scary, because he could have lost his life, and the situation was thoughtless and unusual. Tyler’s parents did not make a good decision, but the past is the past and all you can focus on is the present and the future.
I agree with you that Tyler's parents were not very responsible. I wonder if his parents could be charged with neglect?

Reflection Topic: In your opinion, do video games have an overall positive or negative impact
on teenagers? Why?
Claim: Video games have a negative impact on teenagers.
Most teenagers believe that video games have no effect on them, but is it possible that they do? The health and well being of teenagers is being negatively impacted by video games. First, one of the side effects that is caused by video game addiction is dehydration. “..When you expel more liquids than you drink in, your blood volume shrinks…,” states the article “ Teen Hospitalized after 4-day Video Game Binge.” This means that when teenagers are actively involved with video games they forget to get several drinks of water. Secondly, video game addiction can cause fainting. The article “ Teen Hospitalized after 4-day Video Game Binge” states that, “ … a lack of oxygen in your brain makes you pass out…” When teenagers become so involved in video gaming, they are not hydrating themselves enough, therefore causing low blood pressure which can cause fainting as a result. Finally, video game addiction can result in death. “ Other non-stop gamers who forgot to drink liquids have died,” states the article “ Teen Hospitalized after 4-day Video Game Binge.” Teenagers don’t understand that their life can be taken away from them in an instant. The important message to take away is that video game addiction can put your health at risk. All of these key elements explain why video games have a negative impact on teenagers.
I love how you pointed out the important message at the end. This sentence helped to sum up all of your points. I also liked how you said "this means" after the quote you took from the article.

Should there be a minimum age for playing video games? No, there should not be a certain age because some kids that are above and below the age limit do not really pay attention to the limit. But others have lives to get back to, sports, school, homework, dinner, and sleep These people are responsible and do not really need a time or age limit to play a video game. I believe that if kids are responsible with their gaming system they should not need an age limit. In the article “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game binge” it states, “Severe dehydration can also cause brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, blood clots, or even death.” This shows that gaming for awhile and damage your body. You could die from video games, what is more important video games or life?
“Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game binge” also states, “...Chinese gamer died in February 2011 after playing for three days with little food or sleep.” This means, someone died from being irresponsible with their game. Its not fair to kill your body and a dumb video game. In conclusion, there should not be an age limit for video games.
I am not really clear on why you feel there should not be an age limit. Work on clear explanations!

In the article “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge” it explains that video game marathons can cause injuries or be fatal. In Columbus, Ohio a 15 year old boy passed out after a 5 day video game marathon. He passed out from dehydration and exhaustion. This is not the only case, kids and even adults are dying from too much video games. Video games have a negative affect on teenagers. All around the globe teenagers are addicted to video games. Video games are taking up time of doing work or being outside with friends. As shown in the article, “ In August 2011, 20 year old British Xbox addict, Chris Staniforth died after a blood clot traveled to his lung from calf, a consequence of sitting for extended periods.” Sitting around playing video games can be fatal.
You did a great job of summarizing and using quotes from the article, but I would liked to have seen a bit more of your reaction to what you read. What is your opinion about all of this?

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion video games has a negative impact on teenagers for many different reasons.First because it can make people sick, just like in this article. They can get sick from getting no sleep or no food or nothing to drink. In the article it states, “What caused him to to collapse--- Dehydration, most likely:When you expel more liquids than you drink in, your blood volume shrinks lowering blood pressure, sometimes to the point where the lack of oxygen in your brain makes you pass out.” Second, not only can t make you sick, it can kill you. In August of two years ago, a 20 year old died because he had a blood clot from sitting too long. Even if you are going to play a video game marathon you should have some common sense to get something to drink or eat and get some sleep. In the article it states, “ Remember to drink and eat enough, get up and move around every once in awhile, and turn off the TV and get some real sleep.” Playing Video Games doesn't only hurt yourself, it can hurt other people. A mother let her children and dogs suffer for a couple of days and now i'd banned from the internet. This is my opinion on the impact of video games and teenagers.

ReplyDeleteI think Children should have a age limit for video games. If they have an age limit...... they can do better stuff than just sitting there than playing video games. they can go outside or read a book or whatever. I think they should have a limit for they're safety of the body and brain. Some children can see very violent things on a video game like blood and shooting or something even worse and they will like it and think it will be ok for them to do that stuff and something bad will happen. I don't think they should have a limit for safety so they won't get in trouble and they can have a healthy life without anything bad in there mind and live healthy. So i think they should have a limit to play video games
Alan,

“It was like he was looking at me but he wasn't there- it was like he was looking through me.”... states the aunt of Tyler Rigsby, a victim of video game’s deathly grasp. Video games can cause a very big negative impact on teens. All around the world, teens and parents are risking their health. But, with the most unlikely thing you would imagine. Video games. According to the article, Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge, Tyler Rigsby, a 15-year-old from Columbus, Ohio, wasn't in very good shape on an early Tuesday morning. He had visited his aunt’s house, and collapsed three times, along with his face pale and his lips blue. Video games can have some serious effects on people. Emergency physician, Dr. Mike Patrick, managed to solve the cause of Rigsby’s odd health issue. He said Tyler most likely was suffering from dehydration. “Severe dehydration can also cause brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, blood clots, and even death.” states the article. For example, in 2011 a Chinese gamer died from playing a non-stop gaming session for three days with barely any food or sleep. You never really thought that video games would be so harmful, did you? This problem is global, and it happens with adults, too. A British mom neglected her three kids and two dogs because of an internet game. As you can see, video games can be very dangerous in many ways. Not that you shouldn't play them, but you should try to watch out how much or how long you do… It could cause some events that you wouldn't want to run into.

I believe that parents should be charged with neglect for letting their children play a large amount of gaming. It can cause many things like disease, injury, seizures, even death, and more. For example in the article titled “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge” a child named Tyler Rigsby had come out of his room after a 4-day video game marathon. This could have been still going if the mother had not lured him out with the promise of going to his aunts house. This shows how neglectant a parent can be. another example from the same article, a British mother was banned from the internet and given a two year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she wanted to play the game small worlds. This also shows that not only do parents let their children play a large amount of gaming but also the parents do too. As you can see by letting their kids or themselves playing they can get seriously out of hand which is why I think parents should not only be charged for neglecting their children play a large amount of gaming but neglecting that they are playing a lot of gaming.

Question: In your opinion, do video games have a positive or negative impact on tennagers? Why?
Claim: Video games have a negative impact on tennegers.
In the article, Teen Hospitalized after a 4 day Video Game Binge. Video games have a negative impact on tennegers. For example, if tennegers play too much video games than they can’t do well in their academics. They are not focusing on their school were or studying and they won't be successful. If they were studying for a quiz and they decide playing video games is more important than the quiz than they will get a bad grade. If the parents control the amount that they play, for example, one hour a day than they will be good students and they won't be obsessed playing video games. In the article it states that “ Not unusual enough. in some ways Rigsby was lucky.Other nonstop gamers who forgot to eat and drink have died.” This shows that video games are bad because they already cause you to not do school work but gaming for a large amount of time can cause death.
Video games are rarely a positive impact because most tennegers don’t play exercise games or ones that have education in them. Teenagers play games with violence and when they get addictive with the game it is hard to stop them. For example, most of my friends play games with violence and will play for a while.
Overall, I think playing video games for a large amount of time is terrible for tennegers because they will not focus about school and they might have mishaps.

Is the WII okay because you have to move? Tyler Rigsby average teen but what he was doing he shouldn't have been doing witch would be doing a marathon without food and water. He would take a couple hours have a snack and took a little nap but then when he had his little break he would get back on and start playing. A Dr named Dr. Patrick said in the text that people should have common sense. But his parents didn't they didn't make him get off and stop playing they let keep playing so it was 50-50 Tyler's fault and his parents fault they should have said you can play for an 1 hour. After that they through out the XBOX and he didn't play. What happened after that did his parents get more strict?

Video games have an overall negative impact on teenagers. The main reason is that teenagers are too attracted to it. The article states,”Tyler Rigsby isn’t the first person to sacrifice his health thanks to video-game addiction.” This shows that, in general, there have been other teenagers that have jeopardized their health because of video games. After that, the article even goes on to say,”a Taiwanese 18-year-old died in an internet cafe after a nonstop Diablo session…” and “...a Chinese gamer died in February 2011 after playing for three days with little food or sleep.” In addition, the article also explains that the cause of Tyler’s mishap could be dehydration and that other “non-stop gamers” have died because of it too. In conclusion, it is clearly visible that videogames have negatively affected and can affect other teenagers in the future all because they are too addicted.
You definitely supported the main reasons for playing too many video games. I like how you included information directly from the article. I would like to see a bit more of you own reactions in your future blog responses.

I think that Rigsby’s parents should be charged with neglect. It is not very hard to get up and go check on your son. He could have died from that. It is common sense. If your son doesn’t come out of his room for even 4 hours you should go see what’s going on. I think his parent’s should be charged with neglect and spend 4 days in prison without food, water and even no sleep. Also, a $10,000 fine for neglection. In my opinion the Rigsby parents don’t care about their son and don’t have brains. Their is a good thing to learn from this though. That is check on people. I wonder if his parents even said goodnight to him every night too. If i haven’t heard one one of my siblings or parents in over a week i would text or call them.

Video gaming is something that has to be controlled if you want to be successful in high school, especially if you want to go to a good college. Playing video games when you should be doing homework or studying is bad for your grades, nor does it give you a lot of time to do extracurricular activities. Most colleges look for students with good grades and ACT scores who can still get out, play sports, join clubs, and volunteer places. They don’t look for people who spend more time gaming than studying or doing homework. If you can manage doing all your schoolwork before playing a video game and can get into a good college, you can major in some sort of technological engineering and can go onto creating video games/testing them for a living. And this is why video gaming must be controlled if you want to be successful in high school and later on, life.
I like the point you made about video games coming after you've completed homework. It is important to have fun, but you also have to be responsible.

Question: In your opinion, do video games have an overall positive or negative impact on teenagers? Why?
In my opinion, video games have both positive and negative impact on teenagers but mainly negative. For example, teenagers (mainly boys) are more into the violent types of video games such as, Call of Duty. These people who are playing the video games are just thinking of playing and having fun so they do not concentrate on their health and what can hurt them. Also, they can become addicted to the video game and that can cause separation with family (not spending enough time) and even disrespecting parents. People who play video games (violent video games) are going to see graphic images that probably are not suitable for their age. When people play video games, they will begin to forget to drink, eat, and even sleeping. If they forget to do these important things that they should be doing on a everyday basis, their health can be in danger. In conclusion, these video games have affected teenagers in very bad ways that can even cause death. If they continue doing this, other people in the future can get possibly more severe health problems, so they should just stop while they can.
A good point at the end. Could all this video gaming lead to health problems we don't yet know exist?

I think that video games should be controlled because to do good in school you have to focus on School, not play video games. Playing video games can cause major addiction, but to succeed in school you have to focus on doing homework, getting good grades, study for a test, practicing the material every now and then, etc. if a student is not doing this and playing video games they will not get into a good college and they will be unsuccessful in life. Overall colleges like when you interact with the world and show good leadership skills. But sitting in a basement all day playing video games will get you nowhere.

Are you thinking “Hmm...I should probably play video games till I fall asleep.” DON’T!!! You won’t fall asleep like this dude did. His name is Tyler Rigsby and he played for AT LEAST 4 days straight. Sure he ate snacks, took a quick shower, go to the bathroom, and had a few short naps, but it DOESN’T mean you can play for that long or more. His mom lured him out by saying they were going to his Aunt’s house. He was pale with blue lips. Teen Hospitalized After A 4-Day Video Game Binge states, "it's like he was looking at me but he wasn't there — it was like he was looking through me," the aunt, Jennifer Thompson, tells WCMH-TV. "We were talking and I heard a thump and I looked over and he just fell." Tyler Rigsby collapsed three times after he got to his aunt’s house. T. H. A. A 4-Day V. G. B. says, “Emergency doctors at a local hospital treated him for severe dehydration and exhaustion...” Michelle Castillo at CBS News says that he was actually lucky because other people DIED from doing this. So NEVER go on a video game marathon EVER!

Do you spend much too time playing games?
Now with all this new Technology people made it easier for kids to play games more than the time they go to school. “ Rigsby Had collapsed three time” the Article states. Rigsby was very lucky. kid or teens had died for playing video games for day.
Do you want to die from playing a video ?
If not do these simple steps
Drink and eat
Move around once in awhile
Did Rigsby collapsed because he didn't sleep for a couple hours ?
DR.Mike Patrick says that Rigsby had collapsed because “ your blood volume shrinks, lowing blood pressure, sometimes to the point where a lack of oxygen in your brain makes you pass out.” Now that I notice that kids can die for playing video games long is had showed my brothers this article now they had stop play 30 minutes less than they use to. I showed my brothers this because I don’t want my brother’s to die from playing video games too long hopeful my brother’s will show theirs friends and maybe less kid will die from playing video games. In my opinion think that video games have a negative impact on teenagers because they're focusing more on game than homework and homework is based on your future.

I am a gamer but I’m not too much of a hardcore gamer, but I still like to play video games. My longest stretch of playing video games is was actually twelve hours. It was a saturday and my two friends came over at 1:00 and we started playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 until around 5:00 and we took a break for about an hour to eat a snack, and play basketball outside and do other things. Then we played again but a different game until 8:00, and we ate dinner with my family. The dinner took about an hour and then came right back to playing video games and this time we invited some of our friends online. We did this until 1:00 AM, until we thought we had enough and headed to sleep.
When you read this article, did it scare you a bit to hear about what happened to some of these people?

Video games has a negative impact overall on teens education and everyones lives. Parents should not game either because it will distract them from their work and make their kids left alone if they get too sucked in. Teens should not game either because if the end up creating a binge they will study or get good grades. Gaming can hurt anyone whether or not you are the gamer. Young children could be influenced from these violent games and if they play to much, they will think they are real. Parents can also influence their kids by playing, but this can also cause parents to neglect their kids. These games are not only addictive but they are also violent and anyone can get sucked in. This has a negative effect on not only gamers but everyone. When the game creates a binge they will think its ok to play non-stop when really its very bad for your health. Everyone has the choice to succeed at life, but when you take all that time and throw it at a video game it’s all gone and you can’t get it back. Video games can’t help you in real life so all of this is a waste of time especially when you could be getting an education. Sitting in front of a screen for four days, in Tyler Rigsby’s case could hurt you severely or even kill you. In the article, Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge, it is not uncommon for anyone to die of non-stop gaming. Dehydration and exhaustion is what Tyler was treated for, this has killed other non-stop gamers and he was very lucky to survive. Video games effects this society very negatively because non-stop gaming is bad for your health and if you have younger siblings you can influence them to do the same.

Reflection Topic: In your opinion, do video games have an overall positive or negative impact
on teenagers? Why?
I have to say that video games can have a positive impact for children like teens. It is said that video games can help people see better, learn more quickly, develop greater mental focus, become more spatially aware, estimate more accurately, and multitask more effectively. Some video games can even make young people more sympathetic, helpful and sharing. Even though Dr. Patrick does say that people should not go on a Binge, especially video games, I think that only people truly addicted to video games would actually try to stay up for at least 1 day to play any game. Many people aren’t so addicted so that they stay up for at least a day to play video games. There are cases but even a smaller percentage of people actually die from video games. There is an even smaller percentage of people who actually use what they learned from violence and use it in real life.
I think that parents should also be more involved in their child’s playing time and anything to do with video games because some parents don’t know how harmful video games can be if they are using or playing something wrong. For example; Tyler Rigsby’s parents didn’t know how harmful video game could be so they left their child to do anything he wanted. None of this would have happened if his parents knew what to do.
Once all of these things are fixed, then everything positive about video games will take effect and everything about it will be fine.

Video Games
This article really surprises me, and make me wondering about a lot of things, too. This article talks about people who has played a game for more than they should have ((What I say would be like 1 hour or so)), and having problems with their health. The article was based on this teenager who has played the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and his mom notices that he has been collapsing and had his lips blue. This is very weird and strange for me, because, I never knew that playing games for a long period would affect your health. My opinion about all of this is that, it is very effective for the health, and makes yourself not feeling good and unhealthy, and even bigger consequences can happen. I think it has a negative impact on teenagers. But in the same time, it also has a positive side. What I think is that if you do take too long, it is a negative impact. Playing games for too long can give you less brain power or so, and that it can harm you. As it says from the article “15-year-old Tyler Rigsby emerged from his bedroom after at least four straight days of playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, lured out by his mom with the promise of visiting his aunt's house. Once there, Rigsby collapsed three times, his face pale and lips blue. Emergency doctors at a local hospital treated him for severe dehydration and exhaustion,” This long evidence tells about Rigsby, and how he has played a game for 4 straight days, and he has harmed himself from playing too long. He has got his face pale and his lips got blue. What I think people should do is start to have like at least 30-1 hour game play at least 2-3 times a week, so that they could focus on work, studying, having fun outside, because people need to go outside to be healthy, and plenty of water and enough food to let them live. In conclusion, people should not play long on video games, because it will give them a negative impact.

Question: Should Rigby’s parents be charged with neglect for letting their son do so much gaming?
"Mom's (Tyler Rigbys mom) inability to intervene and end this persistent threat to the health of her child over the course of five days," says Owen Good at Kotaku. Five days! Getting rid of the Xbox is a good step, but I doubt it "totally solves all the problems in this household." This unbelievable but sadly true statement said by Owen Good in the article Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge explains the carelessness of the parents of 15 year old Tyler Rigsby who spent five days in his room on a video game marathon. During this whole time he spent trapped in the world of gaming, his parents went on with their lives until, finally, his mother promised him to a trip to his aunts house. During this trip, he “collapsed three times, his face pale and lips blue.”(as quoted from the article) As a result of dehydration and exhaustion. He was really lucky that it wasn't worse than what he could have suffered. Severe dehydration can end in swelling, seizures, comas, blood clots, kidney failure, and sometimes even death! His parents could have stopped the odd symptoms he had from video games by simply checking on their son and forcing him to get a good nights sleep or a full, well balanced, meal. But they failed to do this and that ended with their son in the hospital. This is an example of horrible parenting and result in severe consequences.

Hey, has your kid been playing video games 4 days straight? Well maybe you should start being a parent and stop being lazy! Just because a kid is fifteen does not mean that the parent should have no clue what she or he is doing. Everybody requires food and water and sleep. Parents need to make sure there kids go to bed and eat and drink regularly. Rigsby's parents obviously neglected to do this. I think they should be charged with neglect because their son almost died. Rigsby collapsed on the floor three times at his aunts house because of his addiction to video games. In conclusion these are the most ignorant parents thinking that playing video games for more than 4 days straight is okay. I love playing video games, but I would never do something this ignorant. Also my parents would never allow this. Now, that is good parenting!

Videos games has a negative impact on teenagers because it ruins their education and health. Teenagers should study more when they have free time because if their is a test in about a week or day then the teenager is screwed. They are screwed because they spent more times on games than studying and games are just eletronic when studying is education books and paper. Studying also will help in the future because if the teen is trying go to college and he/she memorizes the thing they studied then they’ll pass because they spent lots of hours studying than playing games. Also games affect teens health by causing death. For example, in the article it said “Last month, a Taiwanese 18-year-old died in an internet cafe after a nonstop 40-hour Diablo session, while a Chinese gamer died in February 2011 after playing for three days with little food or sleep.” This explains that teens died because of little food and sleep which explains to me that the teens health is important more than video games. The teens also get enough, sleep, and water because if they don’t they would either die or be very sick. Also the video games make their mind not focus in school and will only desire for video games if they don’t stop playing. That is why these problems have to be fix in order to get a positive impact.

I think that Rigby’s parents should not be charged with neglect for letting their son do to much gaming.
For example, in the article, Teen Hospitalized After A 4-Day Video Gaming Binge , it said,"...mom's inability to intervene..." . It is not the mom's fault that her son did that. A lot of kids spend time in their room. She could have though that he was doing homework or studying. She didn't know. The son did leave his room to do things that you need to do in order to survive. So the mom must have though that he needed to do something for school or was doing something important.
So, I think that if she knew her son was gaming in his room, then she should have been charged. But she didn't know he was gaming. So, Rigsby's parents should not be charged with neglect for letting their son do to much gaming.

I think that video games have a positive and negative affect on teenagers depending on the video game. For example, a video game like tetris has a positive impact on a teenager. But a game like black ops or grand theft auto has a negative impact on teenagers. These games have a negative impact on teenagers because they are very violent. Video games like tetris have a positive impact on teenagers because for example, when you play tetris it can relieve your stress. Overall, i think that video games can have a positive impact and a negative impact on teenagers based on what game they are playing.

The question I am reflecting on from this article is if video games have a positive or negative impact on teens. I think that video games have a positive and negative on teens and here is why. For some teenagers video games could be on the most positive thing in their life, because for some teens, video games are a way for them to express their creativity. Or for teens to channel energy, and video games can be one of the most relaxing things in a teens life. But video games can also have a negative impact for teens like Tyler Rigsby who nearly died from playing video games. Or for an 18 year old Taiwanese gamer who died because of 40 hours of non stop gaming. Video games do not only affect the gamer but sometimes the gamers family. Just like a British mother who neglected her three kids and two dogs because of her addiction to the game small worlds. The mother was banned from the internet and given a two year suspended sentence for her neglect . But if I had to choose whether video games were more positive or negative I would have to say negative because video games have taken the lives of many teenage around the world, and if video games are so important that people die then I believe something is very wrong.

In my opinion video games have an overall negative impact on teenagers. I believe that it has a negative impact on teenagers because it can not only cause them to be addidcted but causes them to have health proplems for example Tyler Rigsby gamed for 4 days straight and it caused his lips to turn blue and for him to go pale and eventually passout. Another example a Taiwanese 18 year old died after playing a 40 hour diablo session. Also people are setting really bad examples for others for example a brittish mother was banned from the internet and given a two year suspended sentence for neglecting her 3 children and her 2 dogs not only is that a bad example for her family but people all around the world. Over all video gaming is a negative influence on teenagers and people all around the world. I also don’t belive that Tyler’s mom should be punished for what happen with her son because she could not have known he could have told her that he was sleeping or doing something else.I also think that it is crazy that the hospital have seen cases like his and sometimes even worse cases. I think that its really sad that so many people are addicted to gaming.

Video games have a negative impact on teenagers. The most important thing that affects any person from playing Xbox for too long is your health. Teenagers sit on Xbox playing for hours and get so caught up in the game that they won’t go and get something to drink or eat. A teenager named Tyler Rigsby played Xbox for four straight days without getting up to get any water. In the text it said “......leave his room a few times - for snacks, bathroom breaks and one quick shower - but otherwise was holed up with his Xbox.” This means that Tyler was not getting his heart rate up and his muscles get weaker. Also, if someone doesn’t get up to eat and drink, they are not getting nutrients.
An additional negative consequence from playing too many hours can include dehydration which the text says “...can also cause brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, blood clots, and even death.” Many people don’t know the danger of playing so much. They risk their health over a silly game.
In conclusion, parents and teenagers need to limit the time spent just sitting without getting proper nutrition and activity. Video games should also warn about the dangers of playing too long. Maybe the manufacturers can have it where the game system will stop working for an hour after being on for a certain time.

I don’t think that I am a hardcore gamer. I think my aunt's boyfriend is a hardcore gamer because he plays a lot of video games. I think the longest stretch for video games that I did was 5 hours. But during those five hours I got up and got drinks ate food rested for a little. Every thirty minutes I would get up, get drinks and snacks. Hardcore gamers play video games too much and don’t stop in between.

In my opinion I think that video games have a very negative impact on teenagers. The article states that playing video games for too long can lead to “brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma. blood clots, and even death”! Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge says “...Chris Staniforth died after a blood clot traveled to his lung from his left calf…”. Staniforth got this blood clot because he was sitting for long periods of time while playing Xbox. People are risking their life just to play video games! I find it weird that this isn't a big deal to people. This is the first time I've heard that people could die from just playing video games. I also think it's strange that they are still coming out with video games with more levels. If the video game has lots of levels kids feel the need to beat the game as fast as they can. This means staying up for days, just like Tyler Rigsby. If teens knew you could die from playing for so long some of them would cut back and some of them still would play for as long as they want because they think it's not true, but if you told these gamers' parents were told that playing for long periods of time is risking their life the teen would most likely either get it taken away or timed so they would have to stop when their parents tell them to after an hour or so. Video games have a very negative effects on teens.

I think Video games have a negative impact on teens. Personally I play video games but I only play on the weekends for only 30-45 minutes. An example of someone who got hospitalized. Columbus,Ohio, 15 year old Tyler Rigsby was playing video games for 4 days straight. Tyler took short breaks for the bathroom or to get food. He didn't get any exercise or get any fresh air. Tyler got no sleep either. Soon enough Tyler lips became blue and Tyler's parents took him straight to immediate care. The doctor said Tyler was not getting enough sleep or fresh air because Tyler was playing call of duty, modern warfare 3.
Tyler's parents should of stop Tyler from playing. It is a lesson to learn to for Tyler's parents to learn to stop him. I think they will watch Tyler. Also teens are not the only people who have this addiction also parents too. I hope nobody in the future has this problem again.

gaming has a negative effect on teen’s because of the responsibility they have for their own health. people who does hard core gaming puts there own lives literally in their own hands, people who do hard core game has the risk of becoming dehydrated, having loss of sleep, and they can even forget to eat. This is obviously a negative effect and these can sometimes lead to death if it continues for a long period of time.
In the article it talks about how a 15 year old boy had a gaming marathon that lasted for four days straight. He came down for snacks and bathroom breaks but then he went right back to playing. finally his mother got him to come out of his room and see his aunt, but when he was there he fainted three times his lips blue and skin pale. The doctors said that he was lucky. Some others though were not and dyed gaming for gaming for long periods of time, so this is a negative effect on teens.
Another negative effect is that teens o play these long marathons do not
get much sleep leading in collapsing from exhaustion. So there are many negative effects on teens from these marathons, one being the fatalities, and two being the exhaustion it causes.

I think video games have a negative affect on kids.
First Kids can put off homework and say Ill do it later and then go play video games for three hrs then they realize that they forgot about the homework and don't really care and then their grades start spiraling and they get bad grades. Video games can also affect a persons personality because too much screen time can cause a person to be grump and in a bad mood. Also I heard that the lights from Iphones and tv can keep you awake and not tired when it is time to go to bed so you stay up later and then when you wake up you are grumpy and tired when you have to go somewhere.
This is a few of the negative affects of video games.

My claim is that video games have an overall negative of effect on teenagers when they play for extensive period of time. One example is given in the article, “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day Video Game Binge” of 15 year old Tyler Rigsby who collapsed three times because of a three day gaming marathon of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. When he went to his aunt’s house, they said in the article, “It looked like he was looking at me but he wasn’t there”. The next thing they knew he passed out from dehydration which can cause brain swelling , seizures, kidney failure, coma, and even death. According to the article,” 20 year old Chris Staniforth died because a blood clot traveled to his lung and killed him”. This was because he was sitting for an extensive period of time gaming. According to the article, these kinds of incidents are common in teenagers all over the world. For example, Taiwanese 18 year old gamer died and a Chinese gamer died after gaming marathons.
It is hard for me to connect this to my own experience because I do not play for more than one hour on school days and 2-3 hours a day on the weekend. My parents don’t allow me to go over that limit because they are good parents. They believe that the rest of the time should be used to do creative or physical activities. I find video games relaxing but too much of anything is bad. The negative effect of gaming could be prevented by kids and parents working together to set limits and rules to gaming and make sure kids are safe.

In the article “Teen Hospitalized after a Four day Video Gaming Binge” Fifteen year old Tyler Rigsby played 4 days straight Call of Duty: Modern Warfare,
with little water, sleep, or food. He had serious dehydration and passed out. He was sent to the local hospital and was lucky to survive. This shows how dangerous video games can be. The can be played every once in awhile, but no more than over two or three hours straight. Video games played too much can cause your neural system to stop firing, dehydration, death, blood clots, and more. When I realized playing video games cause these problems and more global, I was surprised. I never would have thought it could cause so much damage to your health, and maybe even kill you. The problem with over-playing video games isn’t just teens though, it’s adults too. In the article, it explains; “In 2010, a British mother was banned from the internet and given a two-year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds.”
The problem with overplaying video games has gotten very serious, and should be stopped. You should know when you need to stop, get some sleep, get some water, food, or just plain stop because you’ve been sitting too long.

2nd Question
In my opinion, I do not think video games are completely positive or negative. I do not agree with the fact that people play videogames 24/7, but even so, video games are a way to calm your mind by relaxing. School and work can make people stressed, so video games are one way to take a break, especially if you’re too tired to move around. But even if it is a way to relax and chill out even with friends, it’s always good to take a break in between gaming sessions to take a drink of water or move around. People who don’t follow these rules can get health problems which can cause death. This is the bad side of playing video games. In conclusion, I do not think video games are bad, unless you play too much of it, which can affect academics and health.

In my opinion, video games have a negative impact on teenegaers. Teenagers are getting way too addicted to the games and won’t take a break from the video games. They won’t get up, talk, eat, drink, or even sleep for days. This is leading to many illnesses and diseases. Dehydration, exhaustion, blood pressure problems, lack of oxygen, brain swelling, seizures, kidney failures, comas, blood clots. While teens are playing these games for hours and days they are losing brain cells. The games aren’t teaching the kids anything. And they aren’t helping them in any kind of way. When they are playing the games the teens, quite frankly, are losing commonsense. All they think about is the video games. They are so into they forget about the real world. They don’t eat or drink for days and that is what is killing them. Some teenagers just can’t handle the games. Although there are some that can. that can control their playing time on these video games. I think it also has a lot to do with the parenting. If the parents show and are willing to let their kids play video games for forever, of course they are. But if the parents show some control the kids will understand that they can’t do the games forever. Overall I think that video games have a very negative affect on teenagers.

From my viewpoint, video games have a negative effect on teenagers these days. In the article “ Teen Hospitalized After a 4 Day Video Game Binge.]”Teenagers are getting way out of control with video games. For example, they are not sleeping, drinking, eating, or even doing schoolwork. For some kids this is getting very hazardous. Teenagers have died from dehydration and also blood clots.
Risking your life for a video game is not worth it. It is very dangerous because it can eventually lead to, blood clots, dehydration, lack of oxygen, seizures, kidney failures, and also comas. One kid got hospitalized from dehydration and his mom didn't even check on him for three or four days. Parents need to be checking on kids more often.
In other cases, the parents need to be paying attention to their kids. A mother was sentenced a two year no internet because she was so enhanced in this game and neglected her animals and children. This article gives me evidence that technology has ruined this generation.

I think video games have a negative impact on teenagers because its not just an issue for teenagers it's also affecting adults. A mom neglected her three kids and two dog by playing on the online game Small Worlds. Also a lot of people die because of too much video games it causes them to be dehydrated then it leads to brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, and blood clots.thats why i think video games have a negative impact on teenagers.

ReplyDeleteI think there should not be a minimum age on video games. They just need some sort of cap on them. I agree that some teens can get taken too far, but, If the game for their parents shut off the game every 1 ½ hr. or so there would be no problem. Video games can be helpful for learning and other various skills, why would we put a cap on learning? All the gaming mishaps have been because of people that could not stop gaming, This is why a short break every now and then could prevent gamer deaths and mishaps. As long as gamer and people alike take breaks and get hydrated with some physical fitness I see no reason to put a minimum age on Video games. As from the article, “ Remember to eat, get up, move around every once and awhile, and get some sleep.” this shows there doesn't need to be an age minimum on video games just take a few breaks.

Despite the fact that I already knew that video games had a negative effect on people, I never knew that it could kill a person. I knew that some people would stay up for a whole night but not for 3-5 days at all. Knowing that people in China are passing away because they sit for to long and get blood clots or they forget to eat, and drink and become dyhrated. I didn't even know that the side effects of playing to many video games is brain swelling from lack of oxygen, going into a coma, blood clots, and lastly kidney failure! This article should be put on the news to help raise awareness to kids that they are risking their health staying up all night to play a game. Video Games should have a time limit as to how much you can play a day. I still think that the occasional hour playing time is alright but all nighter's just aren't good.

I think Rigsby parent’s should be charged for neglecting their son when he was in his room for four days in his room hardly eating and not coming out of his room for long. They just ignored him for a long period of time and by the time he came out he was looking horrible. If i was his parent i would have checked up on him on the first night and made sure he was eating and drinking

I believe that video games can have a negative impact on teenagers lives. Only the irresponsible ones, they can become obsessed. If they really like the game they might not realize that other things are more important than their gaming.I think that maybe parents should sign a contract with the game store that they are responsible of their child's game time. Gaming is fun, but should be restricted for good purposes.
“Rigsby collapsed three times, his face pale and lips blue. Emergency doctors at a local hospital treated him for severe dehydration and exhaustion,” quoted by TEEN HOSPITALIZED AFTER A 4-DAY VIDEO GAME BINGE. Reflection Question: Are you a hardcore gamer? If not, do you know any? What’s the longest stretch of video gaming that you or your friends have ever done? The reason I picked this question is because I love to play video games and have played for long periods of time. I have gone all day, the longest I think I have played must of been about 16 hours with meal breaks. I don’t really play video games much any more, now I can barely play an hour. My brother used to love video games too and he could play for ever but he never plays them any more. My reaction to this article was pretty surprising but I think that it is dumb to just point out video games. Really if you were addicted to books and had 48 hour book marathons without much water you could have the same effects as a lot of the gamers described in the article had. The things that were caused “Dehydration, when you expel more liquids than you drink in, your blood volume shrinks, lowering blood pressure, sometimes to the point where a lack of oxygen in your brain makes you pass out, Severe dehydration can also cause brain swelling, seizures, kidney failure, coma, blood clots, and even death,” These things aren't from video games there from anything and you could get them from doing anything for too long.

ReplyDeleteI think that video games are something that you need to keep under control in order to be successful in high school. If you play video games very often then it can reflect in your grades and can affect your health. If you have home work but your playing video games you might not get it done, or if you do get it done you can still study for tests. I am not saying that you can’t play video games, you can play them on the weekend if you studied and did your homework. But you have to limit your time playing them.

ReplyDeleteVideo games are sometimes positive but not all the times. Video games are fun, addicting but can be bad for your mind and health. the fifteen year old Tyler Rigsby took it too far by playing Call of duty modern warfare for too long four hours or five he ended up in the hospital but he wasn't the only one.
I think Video games are good in some ways because it can entertain you but you can't get entertained for ever because the same thing that happened to Rigsby could happen to any gamers out there another reason why video games can be good and bad is because video games can prevent you from studying and learning all because you are too busy playing, The last reason why video games can be good and bad is because you can get some exercise if you play the right games that you actually move not just sit on the bed or computer chair playing a good video game to play is all the “ Just dance” video games.
This is why video games can be good and bad for you.

Honestly, I think that playing video games 4 days until you pass out is just unbelievable. The whole fact that the mother let him do that just blows my mind. In the world people have actually died from doing this, just playing video games until you quite literally drop dead. In my house, my brothers and I can only play video games Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and the days that we can play, we can only play 30 minutes. A 15 year old child playing video games until they faint is really unhealthy. A teenager should be going outside and playing sports instead of Call of Duty.

I am shocked at the article Teen Hospitalized After A 4-Day Video Game Binge. Video games have a negative effect on teenagers. The fact that a teenager would put his/her own health at risk because of a video game. I admit it I am a gamer but I would definitely not put myself in risk of death so I can play video games. Also the fact that the parent would let him play for 4-5 days straight. The other examples the article gave about game addictions were surprising too, like how the article stated above said “A British mother was banned from the internet and given a two year suspended sentence for neglecting her three kids and two dogs because she was so engrossed in the online game Small Worlds.” I think video games have a negative impact on teenagers, because they get addicted to the games and do things like this.

Is video gaming something you need to keep under control in order to be successful in high school? If not, what are your “binge” habits and how can you work on controlling it?
It is bad to play video game for so long you need to take a breath of fresh air and eat and drink and sleep. If you play this much it will not help you in high school because you are so tired and not focused all day. Playing like that will get you sick and you will need to be taken to a hospital like the boy Tyler Rigsby who played for 4 days with very little breaks and naps. It will be very bad for you in high school because you can be so tired you are not paying attention at all. You will get behind on all your school work and everything if you play that much. In the end it will not be helping you in any way by playing this much video games

The book I am reading is The Battle of the Labyrinth, By Rick Riordan. Some characters are Percy, Annabeth, Grover,, Tyson, the Gods, Daedalus, Luke( bad guy), and Percy’s mom. The story takes place in New Jersey and Mt St Helen's. The problem is Percy’s friends have to find Daedalus to prevent Luke from obtaining Ariadne's String; the tool that would allow Luke to navigate the Labyrinth. This could start a war Between the gods and the Demigods. They fight mystical creatures and go through a huge maze. I would recommend you this book if you like fantasy or gods. This was an amazing book and this series is awesome.

Video gaming is not something i need or other people need to be successful in high school. Why because gaming can get you so focus on the game you could forget things you learned over summer or in summer school. Also because it can make you sick and make you collapse like in the article “Teen Hospitalized after a 4-day video game binge”. I don't think I have a binge why because I like to bmx and its an activity/sport that keeps you active and hydrated at times and you can have fun with it and you also can't so I do football or wrestling any sport that keeps me active. Also i’m not really addicted to games I don't play games everyday and if i do play for hours I have water with and food with me so i'm good to play. Also when kids play games for hours they tend to not act normal for example the boy passed out four times in one day also they don't eat or drink water to be hydrated and that's important because that keeps you up and running for the day. Also in the story the boys lips turned blue because he did not have any water he just left to eat and use the bathroom and shower.

Should Rigsby’s parents be charged with neglect for letting their son do so much gaming? I think yes, this whole incident would not have happened if his parents came into his room and told him to stop But sometimes the problem is different when the parents are doing the gaming and not taking care of their family. In 2011 a mother became addicted to an online game and didn’t take care of her three children and two dogs. She was given a two year suspended sentence. I think that was right to do that.
I think it is very important that people like Tyler’s parent(s) and the mom that neglected her children should get punished for not caring enough to care about what is most important.

Fifteen year old Tyler Rigsby fainted three times and his lips were blue and was very pale. This was after four days of gaming, Which his parents shouldn't of allowed him to do.

The book I read was "The Fire Of Ares" by Michael Ford. The problem of my story is how a slave is done with being a slave and wants to escape. The time takes place in Spartan time. He is a slave that lives in Sparta. I loved the book because it has a bunch of action. It is all about death and fighting, also escaping. I would rate this three out of one. It was amazing because I love Spartan stories and action.

For one they should have made sure he took more than one shower in five days! They also should have Made sure he was getting enough liquids! If I am at school for only a day my parents still ask if I ate enough and drank enough. I bet if you compared any other parent to Rigsby’s parents that his parents would definitely not come out on top. I really hope that his parents get charged with neglect because there were so many red flags that should have told them he was not healthy! Even his aunt could tell he was definitely sick.

Rigsby’s parents should not be charged for anything, because Rigsby was doing something he wanted to do. He made the choice to pick up the controller. Not his parents. If anything the parents should be given an award for letting their child do what they wanted. It’s not like his parents left him for a year or a month. Its also not like Rigsby went off and did drugs and his parents let him. He was just a victim to a bad case of addiction. Plus Rigsby didn’t even play that long. “Rigsby did nap for a couple hours here and there during his marathon gaming session, and leaving his room a few times - for snacks, bathroom breaks, and one quick shower”. In that sentence it said “ Rigsby did nap for a couple hours here and there during his marathon gaming session”, if you read it slowly you will see that it was his fault not his parents. So should rigsby parents be charged for neglect? No, because it was Rigsbys stupid choice to pick up the controller and never put it down!

I think that video gaming for long periods of time is really bad. Why did Rigby game for 4 days straight? Why didnt someone stop Him? Didn't he just get tired at looking at a screen for a super long period of time? I think that for just video gaming for extended pieces of time you could put your life at risk or you will get brutal symptoms. I am not a hardcore gamer. If i play one game of video games i get a headache or get sick of the game or just looking at a screen. there should not be a minimum age for video gaming. Video gaming should be limited and kept controlled by a parent. Video gaming should be a Once a day thing not an all day thing. I think that video gaming is fine as long as you don't over play it.

yes i'm kinda a hardcore gamer but i don't play for days just like hours the longest I ever played is 7 hours in one day 9:00-4:00 My friend played with me but i could never go 4 days playing video games not even if im bored like tyler i think the kid have no life because would wanna play video games for 4 days straight. Why would his mom or dad let him play videogames for 4 days straight?.and Chris must be really immature because hes 20 years old and sat in his and played video games then he had a blood clot and died. was the people really that lazy that he couldn't take better shower because they said he took a quick shower.but how did he faith because they said that he went to get like snacks and drinks so how could he be dehydrated? but he also took naps for a couple of hours so it wasn't straight. But i can't understand how he could play for that long.
Question: Should Rigsby’s parents be charged with neglect for letting their son do so much gaming?
ReplyDeleteShould Rigsby’s parents be charged with neglect for letting their son do so much gaming?
Rigsby’s parents did not pay much attention to Rigsby because in the article the evidence from the text said “ Early Tuesday morning in Columbus, Ohio, 15 year old Tyler Rigsby emerged from his bedroom after at least four straight days of playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, lured out of his by his mom with the promise of visiting his aunt’s house.” First, this shows that his parents haven’t payed attention to their own son in FOUR DAYS!!! Can you believe having parents like those who only pay attention to you when you pass out and make a loud thump to the ground! His parents ignored him so much that after he fell 3 Times, “ his face was pale and his lips were blue.” Rigsby was dehydrated and exhausted from all the time he spent doing a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare marathon 4 days straight.
Second, the saying goes on that teenagers have a “ bizarre tendency to game till you drop”. Can you imagine someone prolly sacrificing their life for a stupid and dangerous/ hazardous gaming marathon. Also, the sub title of one of the paragraphs Did Rigsby really play Modern Warfare for four days? has a scary and bad ring to it or even a fatalities situation to it. The article states that “ Four or five , his family isn’t really sure. Rigsby did nap a couple hours here and there during his marathon gaming session, and leave his room a few times- for snacks, bathroom breaks, and a quick shower.” Does that sound good to you , or does it sound like bad parenting? For my opinion, it sounds like,... BAD PARENTING!!!!!
Third, If you were a parent, would you let your kid do whatever without you knowing and don’t go check and see what he is doing or do the opposite, because if you say the first then you might as well be saying “ I want to see my kid die because of video games!!!! Even if you would never say that, that is what your actions say and tell you, your child, and even family and the people you know that you would say that.

Video games are fun I can say that because I'm a gamer but my claim is don't play games for four DAYS long! that is just cruel. Play for about maybe 3-4 hours a day (in my words) Drink lots of water eat real food and sleep for 8-10 hours a day. That is the best way to do it. Trust me I've once did something like that, Only lasted 17 hours I was dying for water. DON'T do it. trust me on this one. It is dangerous and a lot of fun but just don't do it. if its tempting you go outside and grab a video camera and make a video outside! That's what I do. Take it from my own words.

Well my confusion is how could he be playing for that long without getting sick of it after a few hours of playing with it. Because I usually get bord of a Video Game after an hour or unless it is a very new video game. Well I'm surprised that the mother let him play that long without making him stop because I know if that were my mom the would stop me after four hours or most likely less. Also I could not last a whole day without eating a whole meal but thats just me personally. One more thing is I could not go 4 days with just a little bit to drink if I do not have a drink with me I usally go and get water in all of my classes
